Livro de Jó 22

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Elifaz de Temã tomou a palavra nestes termos:	1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:
2 Pode o homem ser útil a Deus? O sábio só é útil a si mesmo.	2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?
3 De que serve ao Todo-poderoso que tu sejas justo? Tem ele interesse que teu proceder seja íntegro?	3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?
4 É por causa de tua piedade que ele te pune, e entra contigo em juízo?	4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?
5 Não é enorme a tua malícia, e não são inumeráveis as tuas iniqüidades?	5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!
6 Sem causa tomaste penhores a teus irmãos, despojaste de suas vestes os miseráveis;	6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,
7 não davas água ao sedento, recusavas o pão ao esfomeado.	7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;
8 A terra era do mais forte, e o protegido é que nela se estabelecia.	8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,
9 Despedias as viúvas com as mãos vazias, quebravas os braços dos órfãos.	9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.
10 Eis por que estás cercado de laços, e os terrores súbitos te amedrontam.	10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;
11 A luz obscureceu-se; já não vês nada; e o dilúvio águas te engole.	11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.
12 Não está Deus nas alturas dos céus? Vê a cabeça das estrelas como está alta!	12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?
13 E dizes: Que sabe Deus? Pode ele julgar através da nuvem opaca?	13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?
14 As nuvens formam um véu que o impede de ver; ele passeia pela abóbada do céu.	14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'
15 Segues, pois, rotas antigas por onde andavam os homens iníquos	15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,
16 que foram arrebatados antes do tempo, e cujos fundamentos foram arrastados com as águas,	16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,
17 e que diziam a Deus: Retira-te de nós, que poderia fazer-nos o Todo-poderoso?	17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'
18 Foi ele, entretanto, que lhes cumulou de bens as casas; - longe de mim os conselhos dos maus! -	18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!
19 Vendo-os, os justos se alegram, e o inocente zomba deles:	19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:
20 Nossos inimigos estão aniquilados, e o fogo devorou-lhes as riquezas!	20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'
21 Reconcilia-te, pois, com {Deus} e faz as pazes com ele, é assim que te será de novo dada a felicidade;	21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.
22 aceita a instrução de sua boca, e põe suas palavras em teu coração.	22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.
23 Se te voltares humildemente para o Todo-poderoso, se afastares a iniqüidade de tua tenda,	23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,
24 se atirares as barras de ouro ao pó, e o ouro de Ofir entre os pedregulhos da torrente,	24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,
25 o Todo-poderoso será teu ouro e um monte de prata para ti.	25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.
26 Então farás do Todo-poderoso as tuas delícias, e levantarás teu rosto a Deus.	26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.
27 Tu lhe rogarás, e ele te ouvirá, e cumprirás os teus votos:	27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.
28 formarás os teus projetos, que terão feliz êxito, e a luz brilhará em tuas veredas.	28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;
29 Pois Deus abaixa o altivo e o orgulhoso, mas socorre aquele que abaixa os olhos.	29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.
30 Salva o inocente, o qual é libertado pela pureza de suas mãos.	30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.
