NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Testificor coram Deo et Christo Iesu, qui iudicaturus est vivos ac mortuos, per adventum ipsius et regnum eius:1 Before God and before Christ Jesus who is to be judge of the living and the dead, I charge you, in thename of his appearing and of his kingdom:
praedica verbum, insta opportune, importune, argue, increpa, obsecra in omni longanimitate et doctrina.2 proclaim the message and, welcome or unwelcome, insist on it. Refute falsehood, correct error, giveencouragement -- but do all with patience and with care to instruct.
Erit enim tempus, cum sanam doctrinam non sustinebunt, sed ad sua desideria coacervabunt sibi magistros prurientes auribus,3 The time is sure to come when people wil not accept sound teaching, but their ears wil be itching foranything new and they wil col ect themselves a whole series of teachers according to their own tastes;
et a veritate quidem auditum avertent, ad fabulas autem convertentur.4 and then they will shut their ears to the truth and wil turn to myths.
Tu vero vigila in omnibus, labora, opus fac evangelistae, ministerium tuum imple.
But you must keep steady al the time; put up with suffering; do the work of preaching the gospel; fulfilthe service asked of you.
Ego enim iam delibor, et tempus meae resolutionis instat.6 As for me, my life is already being poured away as a libation, and the time has come for me to depart.
Bonum certamen certavi, cursum consummavi, fidem servavi;7 I have fought the good fight to the end; I have run the race to the finish; I have kept the faith;
in reliquo reposita est mihi iustitiae corona, quam reddet mihi Dominus in illa die, iustus iudex, non solum autem mihi sed et omnibus, qui diligunt adventum eius.
al there is to come for me now is the crown of uprightness which the Lord, the upright judge, wil give tome on that Day; and not only to me but to al those who have longed for his appearing.
Festina venire ad me cito.9 Make every effort to come and see me as soon as you can.
Demas enim me dereliquit diligens hoc saeculum et abiit Thessalonicam, Crescens in Galatiam, Titus in Dalmatiam;10 As it is, Demas has deserted me for love of this life and gone to Thessalonica, Crescens has gone toGalatia and Titus to Dalmatia;
Lucas est mecum solus. Marcum assumens adduc tecum, est enim mihi utilis in ministerium.11 only Luke is with me. Bring Mark with you; I find him a useful helper in my work.
Tychicum autem misi Ephesum.12 I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus.
Paenulam, quam reliqui Troade apud Carpum, veniens affer, et libros, maxime autem membranas.13 When you come, bring the cloak I left with Carpus in Troas, and the scrol s, especially the parchmentones.
Alexander aerarius multa mala mihi ostendit. Reddet ei Dominus secundum opera eius;14 Alexander the coppersmith has done me a lot of harm; the Lord wil repay him as his deeds deserve.
quem et tu devita, valde enim restitit verbis nostris.
Be on your guard against him yourself, because he has been bitterly contesting everything that we say.
In prima mea defensione nemo mihi affuit, sed omnes me dereliquerunt. Non illis reputetur;16 The first time I had to present my defence, no one came into court to support me. Every one of themdeserted me -- may they not be held accountable for it.
Dominus autem mihi astitit et confortavit me, ut per me praedicatio impleatur, et audiant omnes gentes; et liberatus sum de ore leonis.17 But the Lord stood by me and gave me power, so that through me the message might be ful yproclaimed for al the gentiles to hear; and so I was saved from the lion's mouth.
Liberabit me Dominus ab omni opere malo et salvum faciet in regnum suum caeleste; cui gloria in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
The Lord will rescue me from all evil attempts on me, and bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. Tohim be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Saluta Priscam et Aquilam et Onesiphori domum.19 Greetings to Prisca and Aquila, and the family of Onesiphorus.
Erastus remansit Corinthi, Trophimum autem reliqui infirmum Mileti.20 Erastus stayed behind at Corinth, and I left Trophimus il at Miletus.
Festina ante hiemem venire.
Salutat te Eubulus et Pudens et Linus et Claudia et fratres omnes.
Make every effort to come before the winter. Greetings to you from Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudiaand all the brothers.
Dominus cum spiritu tuo. Gratia vobiscum.
The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.
