NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Nolo enim vos ignorare, fra tres, quoniam patres nostri omnes sub nubefuerunt et omnes mare transierunt1 I want you to be quite certain, brothers, that our ancestors al had the cloud over them and al passedthrough the sea.
et omnes in Moyse baptizati sunt in nube etin mari2 In the cloud and in the sea they were all baptised into Moses;
et omnes eandem escam spiritalem manducaverunt3 al ate the same spiritual food
et omnes eundem potumspiritalem biberunt; bibebant autem de spiritali, consequente eos, petra; petraautem erat Christus.4 and al drank the same spiritual drink, since they drank from the spiritual rock which fol owed them, and that rock was Christ.
In spite of this, God was not pleased with most of them, and their corpses were scattered over thedesert.
Haec autem figurae fuerunt nostrae, ut non simus concupiscentes malorum, sicutet illi concupierunt.6 Now these happenings were examples, for our benefit, so that we should never set our hearts, as theydid, on evil things;
Neque idolorum cultores efficiamini, sicut quidam exipsis; quemadmodum scriptum est: “ Sedit populus manducare et bibere, etsurrexerunt ludere ”.7 nor are you to worship false gods, as some of them did, as it says in scripture: The people sat down toeat and drink, and afterwards got up to amuse themselves.
Neque fornicemur, sicut quidam ex ipsis fornicatisunt, et ceciderunt una die viginti tria milia.8 Nor, again, are we to fall into sexual immorality; some of them did this, and twenty-three thousand mettheir downfal in one day.
Neque tentemus Christum, sicutquidam eorum tentaverunt et a serpentibus perierunt.9 And we are not to put the Lord to the test; some of them put him to the test, and they were killed bysnakes.
Neque murmuraveritis, sicut quidam eorum murmuraverunt et perierunt ab exterminatore.10 Never complain; some of them complained, and they were killed by the Destroyer.
Now all these things happened to them by way of example, and they were described in writing to bea lesson for us, to whom it has fallen to live in the last days of the ages.
Itaque, qui se existimat stare, videat, necadat.12 Everyone, no matter how firmly he thinks he is standing, must be careful he does not fall.
None of the trials which have come upon you is more than a human being can stand. You can trustthat God wil not let you be put to the test beyond your strength, but with any trial will also provide a way out byenabling you to put up with it.
Propter quod, carissimi mihi, fugite ab idolorum cultura.14 For that reason, my dear friends, have nothing to do with the worship of false gods.
Ut prudentibusloquor; vos iudicate, quod dico:15 I am talking to you as sensible people; weigh up for yourselves what I have to say.
Calix benedictionis, cui benedicimus, nonnecommunicatio sanguinis Christi est? Et panis, quem frangimus, nonne communicatiocorporis Christi est?16 The blessing-cup, which we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ; and the loaf of bread which we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ?
Quoniam unus panis, unum corpus multi sumus, omnes enimde uno pane participamur.17 And as there is one loaf, so we, although there are many of us, are one single body, for we all sharein the one loaf.
Now compare the natural people of Israel: is it not true that those who eat the sacrifices share thealtar?
Quid ergo dico? Quod idolothytum sit aliquid? Aut quod idolum sit aliquid?19 What does this mean? That the dedication of food to false gods amounts to anything? Or that falsegods themselves amount to anything?
No, it does not; simply that when pagans sacrifice, what is sacrificed by them is sacrificed to demonswho are not God. I do not want you to share with demons.
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons as wel ; you cannot have a share at theLord's table and the demons' table as wel .
Anaemulamur Dominum? Numquid fortiores illo sumus?
Do we real y want to arouse the Lord's jealousy; are we stronger than he is?
“ Omnia licent! ”. Sed non omnia expediunt. “ Omnia licent! ”. Sednon omnia aedificant.23 'Everything is permissible'; maybe so, but not everything does good. True, everything is permissible, but not everything builds people up.
Nemo, quod suum est, quaerat, sed quod alterius.24 Nobody should be looking for selfish advantage, but everybody for someone else's.
Omne, quod in macello venit, manducate, nihil interrogantes propterconscientiam;25 Eat anything that is sold in butchers' shops; there is no need to ask questions for conscience's sake,
Domini enim est terra, et plenitudo eius.
since To the Lord belong the earth and all it contains.
Si quis vocat vos infidelium, et vultis ire, omne, quod vobis apponitur, manducate, nihil interrogantes propter conscientiam.27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal, go if you want to, and eat whatever is put before you; you neednot ask questions of conscience first.
But if someone says to you, 'This food has been offered in sacrifice,' do not eat it, out ofconsideration for the person that told you, for conscience's sake-
conscientiam autem dico non tuamipsius sed alterius. Ut quid enim libertas mea iudicatur ab alia conscientia?29 not your own conscience, I mean, but the other person's. Why should my freedom be governed bysomebody else's conscience?
Provided that I accept it with gratitude, why should I be blamed for eating food for which I givethanks?
Sive ergo manducatis sive bibitis sive aliud quid facitis, omnia in gloriamDei facite.31 Whatever you eat, then, or drink, and whatever else you do, do it al for the glory of God.
Sine offensione estote Iudaeis et Graecis et ecclesiae Dei,32 Never be a cause of offence, either to Jews or to Greeks or to the Church of God,
just as I try to accommodate everybody in everything, not looking for my own advantage, but for theadvantage of everybody else, so that they may be saved.
