NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
In the church at Antioch the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon cal ed Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
Ministrantibus autem illisDomino et ieiunantibus, dixit Spiritus Sanctus: “ Separate mihi Barnabam etSaulum in opus, ad quod vocavi eos ”.2 One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and keeping a fast, the Holy Spirit said, 'I wantBarnabas and Saul set apart for the work to which I have cal ed them.'
Tunc ieiunantes et orantesimponentesque eis manus dimiserunt illos.
So it was that after fasting and prayer they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
Et ipsi quidem missi ab Spiritu Sancto devenerunt Seleuciam et indenavigaverunt Cyprum4 So these two, sent on their mission by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and from there set sail forCyprus.
They landed at Salamis and proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; John acted astheir assistant.
Et cumperambulassent universam insulam usque Paphum, invenerunt quendam virum magumpseudoprophetam Iudaeum, cui nomen Bariesu,6 They travel ed the whole length of the island, and at Paphos they came in contact with a Jewishmagician and false prophet cal ed Bar-Jesus.
qui erat cum proconsule SergioPaulo, viro prudente. Hic, accitis Barnaba et Saulo, quaesivit audire verbumDei;7 He was one of the attendants of the proconsul Sergius Paulus, who was an extremely intelligent man.The proconsul summoned Barnabas and Saul and asked to hear the word of God,
resistebat autem illis Elymas, magus, sic enim interpretatur nomen eius, quaerens avertere proconsulem a fide.8 but Elymas the magician (this is what his name means in Greek) tried to stop them so as to prevent theproconsul's conversion to the faith.
Then Saul, whose other name is Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked at him intently
dixit: “ O plene omni dolo et omni fallacia, fili Diaboli, inimice omnis iustitiae, non desines subvertere vias Dominirectas?10 and said, 'You utter fraud, you impostor, you son of the devil, you enemy of al uprightness, will younot stop twisting the straightforward ways of the Lord?
Et confestim cecidit in eum caligo et tenebrae, etcircumiens quaerebat, qui eum manum darent.11 Now watch how the hand of the Lord wil strike you: you wil be blind, and for a time you wil not seethe sun.' That instant, everything went misty and dark for him, and he groped about to find someone to lead himby the hand.
Tunc proconsul, cum vidissetfactum, credidit admirans super doctrinam Domini.
The proconsul, who had watched everything, became a believer, being much struck by what he hadlearnt about the Lord.
Et cum a Papho navigassent, qui erant cum Paulo, venerunt Pergen Pamphyliae;Ioannes autem discedens ab eis reversus est Hierosolymam.13 Paul and his companions went by sea from Paphos to Perga in Pamphylia where John left them to goback to Jerusalem.
Illi veropertranseuntes, a Perge venerunt Antiochiam Pisidiae, et ingressi synagogam diesabbatorum sederunt.14 The others carried on from Perga til they reached Antioch in Pisidia. Here they went to synagogue onthe Sabbath and took their seats.
After the passages from the Law and the Prophets had been read, the presidents of the synagoguesent them a message, 'Brothers, if you would like to address some words of encouragement to the congregation, please do so.'
Surgens autem Paulus et manu silentium indicens ait: “ Viri Israelitae etqui timetis Deum, audite.16 Paul stood up, raised his hand for silence and began to speak: 'Men of Israel, and fearers of God,listen!
Deus plebis huius Israel elegit patres nostros etplebem exaltavit, cum essent incolae in terra Aegypti, et in brachio excelsoeduxit eos ex ea;17 The God of our nation Israel chose our ancestors and made our people great when they were living inEgypt, a land not their own; then by divine power he led them out
et per quadraginta fere annorum tempus mores eorumsustinuit in deserto;18 and for about forty years took care of them in the desert.
et destruens gentes septem in terra Chanaan sortedistribuit terram eorum,19 When he had destroyed seven nations in Canaan, he put them in possession of their land
quasi quadringentos et quinquaginta annos. Et posthaec dedit iudices usque ad Samuel prophetam.20 for about four hundred and fifty years. After this he gave them judges, down to the prophet Samuel.
Et exinde postulaverunt regem,et dedit illis Deus Saul filium Cis, virum de tribu Beniamin, annis quadraginta.21 Then they demanded a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin. After forty years,
Et amoto illo, suscitavit illis David in regem, cui et testimonium perhibensdixit: “Inveni David filium Iesse, virum secundum cor meum, qui faciet omnesvoluntates meas”.
he deposed him and raised up David to be king, whom he attested in these words, "I have foundDavid son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who wil perform my entire wil ."
Huius Deus ex semine secundum promissionem eduxit Israel salvatorem Iesum,23 To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour,
praedicante Ioanne ante adventum eius baptismum paenitentiae omni populo Israel.24 whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the wholepeople of Israel.
Before John ended his course he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; there is someonecoming after me whose sandal I am not fit to undo."
Viri fratres, filii generis Abraham et qui in vobis timent Deum, nobis verbumsalutis huius missum est.26 'My brothers, sons of Abraham's race, and al you godfearers, this message of salvation is meant foryou.
What the people of Jerusalem and their rulers did, though they did not realise it, was in f
et nullam causam mortis invenientes petierunt aPilato, ut interficeretur;28 Though they found nothing to justify his execution, they condemned him and asked Pilate to have himput to death.
cumque consummassent omnia, quae de eo scriptaerant, deponentes eum de ligno posuerunt in monumento.29 When they had carried out everything that scripture foretells about him they took him down from thetree and buried him in a tomb.
Deus vero suscitaviteum a mortuis;30 But God raised him from the dead,
and for many days he appeared to those who had accompanied him from Galilee to Jerusalem: and itis these same companions of his who are now his witnesses before our people.
Et nos vobis evangelizamus eam, quae ad patres promissio facta est,32 'We have come here to tel you the good news that the promise made to our ancestors has comeabout.
quoniam hanc Deus adimplevit filiis eorum, nobis resuscitans Iesum, sicut et inPsalmo secundo scriptum est:
“Filius meus es tu; ego hodie genui te”.
God has fulfil ed it to their children by raising Jesus from the dead. As scripture says in the psalms: You are my son: today I have fathered you.
The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to return to corruption, is no more than what hehad declared: To you I shal give the holy things promised to David which can be relied upon.
Ideoque et in alio dicit:
“Non dabis Sanctum tuum videre corruptionem”.
This is also why it says in another text: You wil not al ow your Holy One to see corruption.
David enim sua generatione cum administrasset voluntati Dei, dormivit etappositus est ad patres suos et vidit corruptionem;36 Now when David in his own time had served God's purposes he died; he was buried with hisancestors and has certainly seen corruption.
quem vero Deussuscitavit, non vidit corruptionem.37 The one whom God has raised up, however, has not seen corruption.
Notum igitur sit vobis, viri fratres, quia per hunc vobis remissio peccatorum annuntiatur; ab omnibus, quibus nonpotuistis in lege Moysi iustificari,38 'My brothers, I want you to realise that it is through him that forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed toyou. Through him justification from al sins from which the Law of Moses was unable to justify
in hoc omnis, qui credit, iustificatur.39 is being offered to every believer.
Videte ergo, ne superveniat, quod dictum est in Prophetis:
'So be careful -- or what the prophets say wil happen to you.
“Videte, contemptores,
et admiramini et disperdimini,
quia opus operor ego in diebus vestris,
Cast your eyes around you, mockers; be amazed, and perish! For I am doing something in your owndays that you would never believe if you were told of it.'
Exeuntibus autem illis, rogabant, ut sequenti sabbato loquerentur sibi verbahaec.42 As they left they were urged to continue this preaching the fol owing Sabbath.
When the meeting broke up many Jews and devout converts fol owed Paul and Barnabas, and in theirtalks with them Paul and Barnabas urged them to remain faithful to the grace God had given them.
Sequenti vero sabbato paene universa civitas convenit audire verbum Domini.44 The next Sabbath almost the whole town assembled to hear the word of God.
When they saw the crowds, the Jews, fil ed with jealousy, used blasphemies to contradict everythingPaul said.
Tunc audenter Paulus et Barnabas dixerunt: “ Vobis oportebat primum loquiverbum Dei; sed quoniam repellitis illud et indignos vos iudicatis aeternaevitae, ecce convertimur ad gentes.46 Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out fearlessly. 'We had to proclaim the word of God to you first, butsince you have rejected it, since you do not think yourselves worthy of eternal life, here and now we turn to thegentiles.
For this is what the Lord commanded us to do when he said: I have made you a light to the nations,so that my salvation may reach the remotest parts of the earth.'
Audientes autem gentes gaudebant et glorificabant verbum Domini, etcrediderunt, quotquot erant praeordinati ad vitam aeternam;48 It made the gentiles very happy to hear this and they gave thanks to the Lord for his message; all whowere destined for eternal life became believers.
ferebatur autemverbum Domini per universam regionem.49 Thus the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside.
Iudaei autem concitaverunt honestasinter colentes mulieres et primos civitatis et excitaverunt persecutionem inPaulum et Barnabam et eiecerunt eos de finibus suis.50 But the Jews worked on some of the devout women of the upper classes and the leading men of thecity; they stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expel ed them from their territory.
At illi, excusso pulverepedum in eos, venerunt Iconium;51 So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went off to Iconium; but theconverts were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.
discipuli quoque replebantur gaudio etSpiritu Sancto.
