Geremia 23

NOVA VULGATA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 “Vae pastoribus, qui disper dunt et dissipant gregem pascuae meae!,dicit Dominus.	1 'Disaster for the shepherds who lose and scatter the sheep of my pasture, Yahweh declares.
2 Ideo haec dicit Dominus, Deus Israel, ad pastores, qui pascuntpopulum meum: Vos dissipastis gregem meum et eiecistis eos et non visitastiseos; ecce ego visitabo super vos malitiam operum vestrorum, ait Dominus.	2 This, therefore, is what Yahweh, God of Israel, says about the shepherds who shepherd my people,"You have scattered my flock, you have driven them away and have not taken care of them. Right, I shal takecare of you for your misdeeds, Yahweh declares!
3 Etego congregabo reliquias gregis mei de omnibus terris, ad quas eiecero eos, etconvertam eos ad rura sua, et crescent et multiplicabuntur.	3 But the remnant of my flock I myself shal gather from all the countries where I have driven them, andbring them back to their folds; they will be fruitful and increase in numbers.
4 Et suscitabo supereos pastores, et pascent eos; non formidabunt ultra et non pavebunt, et nullusquaeretur ex numero, dicit Dominus.	4 For them I shall raise up shepherds to shepherd them and pasture them. No fear, no terror for themany more; not one shal be lost, Yahweh declares!
5 Ecce dies veniunt, dicit Dominus, et suscitabo David germen iustum; et regnabit rex et sapiens erit et faciet iudicium et iustitiam in terra.	5 Look, the days are coming, Yahweh declares, when I shal raise an upright Branch for David; he willreign as king and be wise, doing what is just and upright in the country.
6 In diebus illis salvabitur Iuda, et Israel habitabit confidenter; et hoc est nomen, quod vocabunt eum: Dominus iustitia nostra.	6 In his days Judah wil triumph and Israel live in safety. And this is the name he wil be called, 'Yahweh-is-our-Saving-Justice.' "
7 Propter hoc ecce dies veniunt, dicit Dominus, et non dicent ultra: “VivitDominus, qui eduxit filios Israel de terra Aegypti!”,	7 'So, look, the days are coming, Yahweh declares, when people wil no longer say, "As Yahweh liveswho brought the Israelites out of Egypt,"
8 sed: “Vivit Dominus,qui eduxit et adduxit semen domus Israel de terra aquilonis et de cunctisterris!”, ad quas eieceram eos; et habitabunt in terra sua ”.	8 but, "As Yahweh lives who led back and brought home the offspring of the House of Israel from theland of the north and all the countries to which he had driven them, to live on their own soil." '
9 Ad prophetas. Contritum est cor meum in medio mei, contremuerunt omnia ossa mea; factus sum quasi vir ebrius et quasi homo madidus a vino, a facie Domini et a facie verborum sanctorum eius;	9 On the prophets. My heart is broken within me, I tremble in al my bones; I am like a drunken man, likea man overcome with wine, because of Yahweh and his holy words:
10 quia adulteris repleta est terra, quia a facie maledictionis luxit terra, arefacta sunt arva deserti, factus est cursus eorum malus, et fortitudo eorum iniustitia.	10 'For the country is ful of adulterers; yes, because of a curse, the country is in mourning and thepasturage in the desert has dried up; they are prompt to do wrong, make no effort to do right.
11 “ Propheta namque et sacerdos polluti sunt, et in domo mea inveni malum eorum, ait Dominus.	11 Yes, even prophet and priest are godless, I have detected their wickedness in my own House,Yahweh declares.
12 Idcirco via eorum erit quasi lubricum; in tenebras proicientur et cadent in eis; afferam enim super eos mala, annum visitationis eorum, ait Dominus.	12 Because of this, their way wil prove treacherous going for them; in the darkness where they aredriven, there they wil fall. For I shal bring disaster on them, when the year for punishing them comes, Yahwehdeclares.
13 Et in prophetis Samariae vidi fatuitatem: prophetabant in Baal et decipiebant populum meum Israel.	13 'In the prophets of Samaria I have seen insanity: they prophesied in the name of Baal and led mypeople Israel astray.
14 Et in prophetis Ierusalem vidi horribilia: adulterium faciunt et in mendacio ambulant; et confortaverunt manus pessimorum, ut non converteretur unusquisque a malitia sua: facti sunt mihi omnes ut Sodoma, et habitatores eius quasi Gomorra ”.	14 But in the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: adultery, persistent lying, suchabetting of the wicked that no one renounces his wickedness. To me they are al like Sodom and its inhabitantsare like Gomorrah.
15 Propterea haec dicit Dominus exercituum ad prophetas: “ Ecce ego cibabo eos absinthio et potabo eos felle; a prophetis enim Ierusalem egressa est pollutio super omnem terram.	15 So this is what Yahweh Sabaoth says about the prophets, "Now I shal give them wormwood to eatand make them drink poisoned water, since from the prophets of Jerusalem godlessness has spread throughoutthe land."
16 Haec dicit Dominus exercituum: Nolite audire verba prophetarum, quiprophetant vobis et decipiunt vos; visionem cordis sui loquuntur, non de oreDomini.	16 'Yahweh Sabaoth says this, "Do not listen to what those prophets prophesy to you; they are deludingyou, they retail visions of their own, and not what comes from Yahweh's mouth.
17 Dicunt his, qui despiciunt me: “Locutus est Dominus: Pax erit vobis”; et omni, qui ambulat in pravitate cordis sui, dixerunt: “Non veniet super vos malum”.	17 To those who despise me, they keep saying: Yahweh has spoken: you wil have peace! and to al whofol ow their own stubborn inclinations: No disaster wil touch you."
18 Quis enim affuit in consilio Domini et vidit et audivit sermonem eius? Quisconsideravit verbum illius et audivit?	18 But who has been present in Yahweh's council and seen, and heard his word? Who has paidattention to his word and listened to it?
19 Ecce turbo Domini, indignatio egressa est, et tempestas erumpens super caput impiorum irruet.	19 Look, Yahweh's hurricane, his wrath, bursts out, a fearsome hurricane, to burst on the heads of thewicked;
20 Non cessabit furor Domini, usque dum faciat et usque dum compleat cogitationes cordis sui; in novissimis diebus intellegetis consilium eius.	20 Yahweh's anger wil not withdraw until he has performed, has carried out, what he has in mind. In thefinal days, you wil understand this clearly,
21 Non mittebam prophetas, et ipsi currebant; non loquebar ad eos, et ipsi prophetabant.	21 'I did not send these prophets, yet they ran! I did not speak to them, yet they prophesied!
22 Si stetissent in consilio meo, nota fecissent verba mea populo meo et avertissent utique eos a via sua mala et ab operibus suis pessimis.	22 Had they been present in my council, they could have proclaimed my words to my people and turnedthem from their evil way and from the wickedness of their deeds!
23 Putasne Deus e vicino ego sum, dicit Dominus, et non Deus de longe?	23 'Am I a God when near, Yahweh demands, and not a God when far away?
24 Si occultabitur vir in absconditis, ego non videbo eum?, dicit Dominus. Numquid non caelum et terram ego impleo?, dicit Dominus.	24 Can anyone hide somewhere secret without my seeing him? Yahweh demands. Do I not fil heavenand earth? Yahweh demands.
25 Audivi, quae dixerunt prophetae prophetantes in nomine meo mendacium atquedicentes: “Somniavi, somniavi”.	25 'I have heard what the prophets say who make their lying prophecies in my name. "I have had adream," they say, "I have had a dream!"
26 Usquequo istud est in corde prophetarumvaticinantium mendacium et prophetantium seductionem cordis sui?	26 How long are there to be those among the prophets who prophesy lies and are in fact prophets oftheir own delusions?
27 Qui voluntfacere, ut obliviscatur populus meus nominis mei, propter somnia eorum, quaenarrat unusquisque ad proximum suum, sicut obliti sunt patres eorum nominis meipropter Baal.	27 They are doing their best, by means of the dreams that they keep tel ing each other, to make mypeople forget my name, just as their ancestors forgot my name in favour of Baal.
28 Propheta, qui habet somnium, narret somnium et, qui habetsermonem meum, loquatur sermonem meum vere. Quid paleis ad triticum?, dicit Dominus.	28 Let the prophet who has had a dream tel it for a dream! And let him who receives a word from me,deliver my word accurately! 'What have straw and wheat in common? Yahweh demands.
29 Numquid non verba mea sunt quasi ignis, dicit Dominus, et quasi malleus conterens petram?	29 Is my word not like fire, Yahweh demands, is it not like a hammer shattering a rock?
30 Propterea ecce ego ad prophetas, aitDominus, qui furantur verba mea unusquisque a proximo suo.	30 'So, then, I have a quarrel with the prophets, Yahweh declares, that steal my words from one another.
31 Ecce ego adprophetas, ait Dominus, qui assumunt linguas suas et aiunt: “Dicit Dominus”.	31 I have a quarrel with the prophets, Yahweh declares, who wag their tongues to utter prophecies.
32 Ecce ego ad prophetantes somnia mendacii, ait Dominus, qui narraverunt ea etseduxerunt populum meum in mendaciis suis et in iactantia sua, cum ego nonmisissem eos nec mandassem eis; qui nihil profuerunt populo huic, dicit Dominus.	32 I have a quarrel with the prophets who make prophecies out of lying dreams, Yahweh declares, whorecount them, and lead my people astray by their lies and their bragging. I certainly never sent them orcommissioned them, and they serve no good purpose for this people, Yahweh declares.
33 Si interrogaverit te populus iste vel propheta aut sacerdos dicens: “Quodest onus Domini”, dices ad eos: Vos estis onus; proiciam quippe vos, dicitDominus.	33 'And when this people, or a prophet, or a priest, asks you, "What is Yahweh's burden?" you mustanswer, "You are the burden, and I shal get rid of you, Yahweh declares!"
34 Et propheta et sacerdos et populus, qui dicit: “Onus Domini”,visitabo super virum illum et super domum eius.	34 'As for the prophet, the priest, or anyone else, who says, "Yahweh's burden", I shall punish that man,and his household too.
35 Haec dicetis unusquisque adproximum et ad fratrem suum: “Quid respondit Dominus?” et “Quid locutusest Dominus?”.	35 This is what you must say to one another, among yourselves, "What answer has Yahweh given?" or"What has Yahweh said?"
36 Sed “Onus Domini” ultra non memorabitis, quia onus eritunicuique sermo suus, et pervertitis verba Dei viventis, Domini exercituum, Deinostri.	36 But stop using the expression "Yahweh's burden", for what each man says will be his ownresponsibility. And you twist the words of the living God, of Yahweh Sabaoth, our God.
37 Haec dices ad prophetam: “Quid respondit tibi Dominus?” et “Quidlocutus est Dominus?”.	37 This is the way to speak to a prophet, "What answer has Yahweh given?" or "What has Yahwehsaid?"
38 Si autem “Onus Domini” dixeritis, propter hochaec dicit Dominus: Quia dixistis sermonem istum: “Onus Domini”, et misi advos dicens: Nolite dicere: “Onus Domini”;	38 But if you say, "Yahweh's burden", then Yahweh says this, "Since you use the expression 'Yahweh'sburden', when I have warned you to stop saying, 'Yahweh's burden',
39 propterea, ecce ego tollam vosportans et proiciam vos et civitatem, quam dedi vobis et patribus vestris, afacie mea;	39 believe me, I shal pick you up and fling you from my presence, you and the city I gave to you and toyour ancestors.
40 et dabo vos in opprobrium sempiternum et in ignominiam aeternam,quae numquam oblivione delebitur ”.	40 I shal bring down everlasting shame on you, everlasting and unforgettable disgrace." '
