Hi quoque venerunt ad Da vid in Siceleg, cum adhuc fu geret Saul filium Cis; qui erant fortissimi et egregii pugnatores1 These are the men who rallied to David at Ziklag while he was stil being kept away from Saul son ofKish; they were among the champions, the warriors.
tendentes arcum et utraque manu fundis saxa iacientes et dirigentes sagittas. De fratribus Saul ex Beniamin:2 They were equipped with bows and could sling stones or shoot arrows from the bow with either righthand or left. Of Saul's fellow-tribesmen from Benjamin:
princeps Ahiezer et Ioas filii Samaa Gabaathites et Iaziel et Phalet filii Azmaveth et Baracha et Iehu Anathothites;3 Ahiezer the leader, and Joash, sons of Hassemar of Gibeah, Jeziel and Peleth, sons of Azmaveth,Berachah and Jehu of Anathoth,
Iesmaias quoque Gabaonites fortissimus inter triginta et super triginta,4 Ishmaiah of Gibeon, one of the champions in the Thirty and commander of the Thirty,

Joelah, Zebadiah, sons of Jeroham of Gedor.
Sed et de Gad transfugerunt ad David, cum lateret in deserto, viri robustissimi et pugnatores optimi tenentes clipeum et hastam; facies eorum quasi facies leonis et veloces quasi capreae in montibus:9 From the Gadites, some good, capable fighting men defected and came to David at the stronghold inthe desert -- al skil ed with shield and spear, fierce as lions and nimble as mountain gazel es.
Ezer princeps, Abdias secundus, Eliab tertius,10 Ezer was the leader, Obadiah second, Eliab third,
Masmana quartus, Ieremias quintus,11 Mishmannah fourth, Jeremiah fifth,
Etthei sextus, Eliel septimus,12 Attai sixth, Eliel seventh,
Iohanan octavus, Elzebad nonus,13 Johanan eighth, Elzabad ninth,
Ieremias decimus, Machbanai undecimus.14 Jeremiah tenth, Machbannai eleventh.
These Gadites were the leaders of the troops, the least of them a match for a hundred men and thegreatest a match for a thousand.
These were the men who once crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it had overflowed itsbanks and had driven out al the lowlanders to east and west.
Venerunt autem et de Beniamin et de Iuda ad praesidium, in quo morabatur David.17 Some of the Benjaminites and Judahites also joined David at the stronghold.
Egressusque est David obviam eis et ait: “ Si pacifice venistis ad me, ut auxiliemini mihi, cor meum iungatur vobis; si autem insidiamini mihi pro adversariis meis, cum ego iniquitatem in manibus non habeam, videat Deus patrum nostrorum et iudicet ”.18 When David came forward to meet them, he responded to them by saying, 'If you have come to mewith peaceful intent to help me, you will find me a good friend. But if it is to betray me to my enemies, seeing thatI have done nothing wrong, may the God of our ancestors take note and condemn you.'
“ Tui sumus, o David,
et tecum, fili Isai!
Pax, pax tibi
et pax adiutoribus tuis;
te enim adiuvat Deus tuus ”.
Suscepit ergo eos David et constituit principes turmae.
Then the Spirit invested Amasai the leader of the Thirty: 'We are your men, David; with you, son ofJesse! Peace be with you, peace be with you; peace be with those who help you! For your God has helped you!'And David accepted them, including them among his more senior officers.
Porro de Manasse transfugerunt ad David, quando veniebat cum Philisthim adversus Saul, ut pugnaret; et non dimicavit cum eis, quia inito consilio remiserunt eum principes Philisthinorum dicentes: “ Periculo capitis nostri revertetur ad dominum suum Saul ”.20 Some Manassehites also defected to David as he was setting out with the Philistines to fight Saul.But he did not help the Philistines because, after consultation, their chiefs sent him away, saying, 'He wil defectto his master Saul and it wil cost us our heads!'
Quando igitur reversus est in Siceleg, transfugerunt ad eum de Manasse Ednas et Iozabad et Iedihel et Michael et Iozabad et Eliu et Selathai principes milium in Manasse:21 He was on his way to Ziklag when these Manassehites deserted to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael,Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, Zil ethai, chiefs of thousands in Manasseh.
They helped David and his band, since they were al men of standing and became officers in thearmy.
Indeed reinforcements reached David day after day, so that his camp grew into a camp of prodigioussize.
These are the numbers of ful y armed men who joined David at Hebron to transfer Saul's kingdom tohim in accordance with the order of Yahweh:
Filii Iudae portantes clipeum et hastam sex milia octingenti expediti ad proelium.25 Judahites carrying shield and spear: six thousand eight hundred ful y armed warriors;
De filiis Simeon virorum fortissimorum ad pugnandum septem milia centum.26 Simeonites; seven thousand one hundred champions valiant in war;
De filiis Levi quattuor milia sescenti;27 Levites: four thousand six hundred,
Ioiada quoque princeps de stirpe Aaron et cum eo tria milia septingenti;28 in addition to Jehoiada, in command of the Aaronites, with three thousand seven hundred of these,
Sadoc etiam iuvenis fortissimus et familia eius principes viginti duo.29 Zadok, a young and valiant champion, and twenty-two commanders of his family;

Porro de filiis Ephraim viginti milia octingenti, fortissimi robore viri nominati in familiis suis.31 Ephraimites: twenty thousand eight hundred valiant champions, men famous in their families;
Et ex dimidia parte tribus Manasse decem et octo milia; singuli per nomina sua destinati, ut venirent et constituerent regem David.32 of the half-tribe of Manasseh: eighteen thousand men assigned by name to go and proclaim Davidking;
De filiis quoque Issachar viri eruditi, qui norant singula tempora ad sciendum quid facere deberet Israel, principes ducenti et omnes fratres eorum ad iussa eorum.33 Issacharites, sound judges of the times when Israel should take action, and the way to do it: twohundred chiefs and al their kinsmen under their command;
Porro de Zabulon, qui egrediebantur ad proelium et stabant in acie instructi omnibus armis bellicis, quinquaginta milia venerunt, ut congregarentur non in corde duplici.34 Zebulunites: fifty thousand men fit for service, marshalled for battle, with warlike weapons of everykind, staunch-hearted auxiliaries;
Et de Nephthali principes mille; et cum eis instructa clipeo et hasta triginta septem milia.35 Naphtalites: a thousand commanders, and with them thirty-seven thousand men armed with shieldand spear;
De Dan etiam praeparata ad proelium viginti octo milia sescenti.36 Danites: twenty-eight thousand six hundred men marshal ed for battle;

from Transjordan: a hundred and twenty thousand men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe ofManasseh, with warlike weapons of every kind.
Omnes isti viri bellatores expediti ad pugnandum corde perfecto venerunt in Hebron, ut constituerent regem David super universum Israel; sed et omnes reliqui ex Israel uno corde erant, ut rex fieret David.39 Al these warriors in battle array came to David at Hebron with the firm determination of makingDavid king of al Israel; and the rest of Israel, too, was of one mind in wanting to make David king.
Fueruntque ibi apud David tribus diebus comedentes et bibentes; praeparaverunt enim eis fratres sui.40 For three days they stayed there with David, eating and drinking, their fellow-tribesmen having madepreparations for them;
their neighbours too, from as far away as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, came bringing food ondonkeys, camels, mules and oxen-supplies of flour, fig cakes, bunches of raisins, wine, oil, quantities of oxenand sheep -- for there was joy in Israel.
