| 1 Il Signore mandò un gran pesce a ingoiare Giona, e Giona stette nel ventre del pesce tre giorni e tre notti. | 1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish, |
| 2 E dal ventre del pesce Giona pregò il Signore Dio suo, | 2 saying, "I called to the LORD, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and thou didst hear my voice. |
| 3 e disse: « Dalla mia tribolazione ho alzata la mia voce al Signore, ed egli mi ha esaudito; dal seno dell'abisso ho gridato, e tu hai ascoltata la mia voce. | 3 For thou didst cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood was round about me; all thy waves and thy billows passed over me. |
| 4 Tu mi hai gettato nel profondo, nel cuore del mare, e le onde mi han circondato da ogni parte. Tutti i tuoi marosi e i tuoi flutti son passati sopra di me. | 4 Then I said, 'I am cast out from thy presence; how shall I again look upon thy holy temple?' |
| 5 Ed io a dire: Sono stato cacciato lungi dallo sguardo degli occhi tuoi; eppure potrò contemplare ancora il tuo santo tempio. | 5 The waters closed in over me, the deep was round about me; weeds were wrapped about my head |
| 6 Le acque mi hanno accerchiato fino all'anima, l'abisso mi s'è serrato d'intorno, il mare ha coperto il mio capo. | 6 at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me for ever; yet thou didst bring up my life from the Pit, O LORD my God. |
| 7 Sono sceso fino ai fondamenti delle montagne, le sbarre della terra mi han rinchiuso per sempre; ma tu farai risalire dalla corruzione la mia vita, o Signore mio Dio. | 7 When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to thee, into thy holy temple. |
| 8 Nelle angustie dell'anima mia mi son ricordato del Signore, perchè giunga a te la mia preghiera, al tuo santo tempio. | 8 Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their true loyalty. |
| 9 Coloro che osservano inutili vanità abbandonano la loro misericordia. | 9 But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to thee; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance belongs to the LORD!" |
| 10 Ma io con accenti di lode ti offrirò sacrifizi, e adempirò tutti i voti che ho fatti al Signore per la salvezza ». | 10 And the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. |
| 11 E il Signore ne diede gli ordini al pesce e questo vomitò Giona alla spiaggia. | |
