1 Tutta l'assemblea si alzò, lo condussero da Pilato	1 The whole assembly then rose, and they brought him before Pilate.
2 e cominciarono ad accusarlo: "Abbiamo trovato costui che sobillava il nostro popolo, impediva di dare tributi a Cesare e affermava di essere il Cristo re".	2 They began their accusation by saying, 'We found this man inciting our people to revolt, opposingpayment of the tribute to Caesar, and claiming to be Christ, a king.'
3 Pilato lo interrogò: "Sei tu il re dei Giudei?". Ed egli rispose: "Tu lo dici".	3 Pilate put to him this question, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' He replied, 'It is you who say it.'
4 Pilato disse ai sommi sacerdoti e alla folla: "Non trovo nessuna colpa in quest'uomo".	4 Pilate then said to the chief priests and the crowd, 'I find no case against this man.'
5 Ma essi insistevano: "Costui solleva il popolo, insegnando per tutta la Giudea, dopo aver cominciato dalla Galilea fino a qui".	5 But they persisted, 'He is inflaming the people with his teaching all over Judaea and al the way fromGalilee, where he started, down to here.'
6 Udito ciò, Pilato domandò se era Galileo	6 When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man were a Galilean;
7 e, saputo che apparteneva alla giurisdizione di Erode, lo mandò da Erode che in quei giorni si trovava anch'egli a Gerusalemme.	7 and finding that he came under Herod's jurisdiction, he passed him over to Herod, who was also inJerusalem at that time.
8 Vedendo Gesù, Erode si rallegrò molto, perché da molto tempo desiderava vederlo per averne sentito parlare e sperava di vedere qualche miracolo fatto da lui.	8 Herod was delighted to see Jesus; he had heard about him and had been wanting for a long time toset eyes on him; moreover, he was hoping to see some miracle worked by him.
9 Lo interrogò con molte domande, ma Gesù non gli rispose nulla.	9 So he questioned him at some length, but without getting any reply.
10 C'erano là anche i sommi sacerdoti e gli scribi, e lo accusavano con insistenza.	10 Meanwhile the chief priests and the scribes were there, vigorously pressing their accusations.
11 Allora Erode, con i suoi soldati, lo insultò e lo schernì, poi lo rivestì di una splendida veste e lo rimandò a Pilato.	11 Then Herod, together with his guards, treated him with contempt and made fun of him; he put a richcloak on him and sent him back to Pilate.
12 In quel giorno Erode e Pilato diventarono amici; prima infatti c'era stata inimicizia tra loro.	12 And though Herod and Pilate had been enemies before, they were reconciled that same day.
13 Pilato, riuniti i sommi sacerdoti, le autorità e il popolo,	13 Pilate then summoned the chief priests and the leading men and the people.
14 disse: "Mi avete portato quest'uomo come sobillatore del popolo; ecco, l'ho esaminato davanti a voi, ma non ho trovato in lui nessuna colpa di quelle di cui lo accusate;	14 He said to them, 'You brought this man before me as a popular agitator. Now I have gone into thematter myself in your presence and found no grounds in the man for any of the charges you bring against him.
15 e neanche Erode, infatti ce l'ha rimandato. Ecco, egli non ha fatto nulla che meriti la morte.	15 Nor has Herod either, since he has sent him back to us. As you can see, the man has done nothingthat deserves death,
16 Perciò, dopo averlo severamente castigato, lo rilascerò".	16 so I shal have him flogged and then let him go.'
17 .	17
18 Ma essi si misero a gridare tutti insieme: "A morte costui! Dacci libero Barabba!".	18 But as one man they howled, 'Away with him! Give us Barabbas!'
19 Questi era stato messo in carcere per una sommossa scoppiata in città e per omicidio.	19 (This man had been thrown into prison because of a riot in the city and murder.)
20 Pilato parlò loro di nuovo, volendo rilasciare Gesù.	20 In his desire to set Jesus free, Pilate addressed them again,
21 Ma essi urlavano: "Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo!".	21 but they shouted back, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!'
22 Ed egli, per la terza volta, disse loro: "Ma che male ha fatto costui? Non ho trovato nulla in lui che meriti la morte. Lo castigherò severamente e poi lo rilascerò".	22 And for the third time he spoke to them, 'But what harm has this man done? I have found no caseagainst him that deserves death, so I shal have him flogged and then let him go.'
23 Essi però insistevano a gran voce, chiedendo che venisse crocifisso; e le loro grida crescevano.	23 But they kept on shouting at the top of their voices, demanding that he should be crucified. And theirshouts kept growing louder.
24 Pilato allora decise che la loro richiesta fosse eseguita.	24 Pilate then gave his verdict: their demand was to be granted.
25 Rilasciò colui che era stato messo in carcere per sommossa e omicidio e che essi richiedevano, e abbandonò Gesù alla loro volontà.	25 He released the man they asked for, who had been imprisoned because of rioting and murder, andhanded Jesus over to them to deal with as they pleased.
26 Mentre lo conducevano via, presero un certo Simone di Cirène che veniva dalla campagna e gli misero addosso la croce da portare dietro a Gesù.	26 As they were leading him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in fromthe country, and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus.
27 Lo seguiva una gran folla di popolo e di donne che si battevano il petto e facevano lamenti su di lui.	27 Large numbers of people followed him, and women too, who mourned and lamented for him.
28 Ma Gesù, voltandosi verso le donne, disse: "Figlie di Gerusalemme, non piangete su di me, ma piangete su voi stesse e sui vostri figli.	28 But Jesus turned to them and said, 'Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep rather foryourselves and for your children.
29 Ecco, verranno giorni nei quali si dirà: Beate le sterili e i grembi che non hanno generato e le mammelle che non hanno allattato.	29 For look, the days are surely coming when people wil say, "Blessed are those who are barren, thewombs that have never borne children, the breasts that have never suckled!"
30 Allora cominceranno a 'dire ai monti': 'Cadete su di noi! e ai colli: Copriteci!'	30 Then they wil begin to say to the mountains, "Fal on us!"; to the hills, "Cover us!"
31 Perché se trattano così il legno verde, che avverrà del legno secco?".	31 For if this is what is done to green wood, what wil be done when the wood is dry?'
32 Venivano condotti insieme con lui anche due malfattori per essere giustiziati.	32 Now they were also leading out two others, criminals, to be executed with him.
33 Quando giunsero al luogo detto Cranio, là crocifissero lui e i due malfattori, uno a destra e l'altro a sinistra.	33 When they reached the place called The Skul , there they crucified him and the two criminals, one onhis right, the other on his left.
34 Gesù diceva: "Padre, perdonali, perché non sanno quello che fanno". 'Dopo essersi poi divise le sue vesti, le tirarono a sorte'.	34 Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing.' Then they cast lots to shareout his clothing.
35 Il popolo stava 'a vedere', i capi invece lo 'schernivano' dicendo: "Ha salvato gli altri, salvi se stesso, se è il Cristo di Dio, il suo eletto".	35 The people stayed there watching. As for the leaders, they jeered at him with the words, 'He savedothers, let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.'
36 Anche i soldati lo schernivano, e gli si accostavano per porgergli 'dell'aceto', e dicevano:	36 The soldiers mocked him too, coming up to him, offering him vinegar,
37 "Se tu sei il re dei Giudei, salva te stesso".	37 and saying, 'If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.'
38 C'era anche una scritta, sopra il suo capo: Questi è il re dei Giudei.	38 Above him there was an inscription: 'This is the King of the Jews'.
39 Uno dei malfattori appesi alla croce lo insultava: "Non sei tu il Cristo? Salva te stesso e anche noi!".	39 One of the criminals hanging there abused him: 'Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us aswel .'
40 Ma l'altro lo rimproverava: "Neanche tu hai timore di Dio e sei dannato alla stessa pena?	40 But the other spoke up and rebuked him. 'Have you no fear of God at al ?' he said. 'You got the samesentence as he did,
41 Noi giustamente, perché riceviamo il giusto per le nostre azioni, egli invece non ha fatto nulla di male".	41 but in our case we deserved it: we are paying for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong.'
42 E aggiunse: "Gesù, ricordati di me quando entrerai nel tuo regno".	42 Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.'
43 Gli rispose: "In verità ti dico, oggi sarai con me nel paradiso".	43 He answered him, 'In truth I tel you, today you wil be with me in paradise.'
44 Era verso mezzogiorno, quando il sole si eclissò e si fece buio su tutta la terra fino alle tre del pomeriggio.	44 It was now about the sixth hour and the sun's light failed, so that darkness came over the whole landuntil the ninth hour.
45 Il velo del tempio si squarciò nel mezzo.	45 The veil of the Sanctuary was torn right down the middle.
46 Gesù, gridando a gran voce, disse: "Padre, 'nelle tue mani consegno il mio spirito'". Detto questo spirò.	46 Jesus cried out in a loud voice saying, 'Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.' With these wordshe breathed his last.
47 Visto ciò che era accaduto, il centurione glorificava Dio: "Veramente quest'uomo era giusto".	47 When the centurion saw what had taken place, he gave praise to God and said, 'Truly, this was anupright man.'
48 Anche tutte le folle che erano accorse a questo spettacolo, ripensando a quanto era accaduto, se ne tornavano percuotendosi il petto.	48 And when al the crowds who had gathered for the spectacle saw what had happened, they wenthome beating their breasts.
49 Tutti i suoi conoscenti assistevano da lontano e così le donne che lo avevano seguito fin dalla Galilea, osservando questi avvenimenti.	49 All his friends stood at a distance; so also did the women who had accompanied him from Galilee andsaw all this happen.
50 C'era un uomo di nome Giuseppe, membro del sinedrio, persona buona e giusta.	50 And now a member of the Council arrived, a good and upright man named Joseph.
51 Non aveva aderito alla decisione e all'operato degli altri. Egli era di Arimatéa, una città dei Giudei, e aspettava il regno di Dio.	51 He had not consented to what the others had planned and carried out. He came from Arimathaea, aJewish town, and he lived in the hope of seeing the kingdom of God.
52 Si presentò a Pilato e chiese il corpo di Gesù.	52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
53 Lo calò dalla croce, lo avvolse in un lenzuolo e lo depose in una tomba scavata nella roccia, nella quale nessuno era stato ancora deposto.	53 He then took it down, wrapped it in a shroud and put it in a tomb which was hewn in stone and whichhad never held a body.
54 Era il giorno della parascève e già splendevano le luci del sabato.	54 It was Preparation day and the Sabbath was beginning to grow light.
55 Le donne che erano venute con Gesù dalla Galilea seguivano Giuseppe; esse osservarono la tomba e come era stato deposto il corpo di Gesù,	55 Meanwhile the women who had come from Galilee with Jesus were following behind. They took noteof the tomb and how the body had been laid.
56 poi tornarono indietro e prepararono aromi e oli profumati. Il giorno di sabato osservarono il riposo secondo il comandamento.	56 Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. And on the Sabbath day they rested, as theLaw required.
