1 Meglio essere senza figli e avere la virtù, poiché nel ricordo di questa c'è immortalità, per il fatto che è riconosciuta da Dio e dagli uomini.	1 Better to have no children yet to have virtue, since immortality perpetuates its memory; for God andhuman beings both recognise it.
2 Presente è imitata; assente è desiderata; nell'eternità trionfa, cinta di corona, per aver vinto nella gara di combattimenti senza macchia.	2 Present, we imitate it, absent, we long for it; crowned, it holds triumph through eternity, having strivenfor untainted prizes and emerged the victor.
3 La discendenza numerosa degli empi non servirà a nulla; e dalle sue bastarde propaggini non metterà profonde radici né si consoliderà su una base sicura.	3 But the offspring of the godless come to nothing, however prolific, sprung from a bastard stock, they willnever strike deep roots, never put down firm foundations.
4 Anche se per qualche tempo mette gemme sui rami, i suoi germogli precari saranno scossi dal vento e sradicati dalla violenza delle bufere.	4 They may branch out for a time, but, on unsteady foundations, they will be rocked by the wind anduprooted by the force of the storm;
5 Si spezzeranno i ramoscelli ancora teneri; il loro frutto sarà inutile, non maturo da mangiare, e a nulla servirà.	5 their branches, yet unformed, wil be snapped off, their fruit be useless, too unripe to eat, fit for nothing.
6 Infatti i figli nati da unioni illegali attestano la perversità dei genitori nel giudizio di essi.	6 For children begotten of unlawful bed witness, when put on trial, to their parents' wickedness.
7 Il giusto, anche se muore prematuramente, troverà riposo.	7 The upright, though he die before his time, will find rest.
8 Vecchiaia veneranda non è la longevità, né si calcola dal numero degli anni;	8 Length of days is not what makes age honourable, nor number of years the true measure of life;
9 ma la canizie per gli uomini sta nella sapienza; e un'età senile è una vita senza macchia.	9 understanding, this is grey hairs, untarnished life, this is ripe old age.
10 Divenuto caro a Dio, fu amato da lui e poiché viveva fra peccatori, fu trasferito.	10 Having won God's favour, he has been loved and, as he was living among sinners, has been takenaway.
11 Fu rapito, perché la malizia non ne mutasse i sentimenti o l'inganno non ne traviasse l'animo,	11 He has been carried off so that evil may not warp his understanding or deceitfulness seduce his soul;
12 poiché il fascino del vizio deturpa anche il bene e il turbine della passione travolge una mente semplice.	12 for the fascination of evil throws good things into the shade, and the whirlwind of desire corrupts asimple heart.
13 Giunto in breve alla perfezione, ha compiuto una lunga carriera.	13 Having come to perfection so soon, he has lived long;
14 La sua anima fu gradita al Signore; perciò egli lo tolse in fretta da un ambiente malvagio. I popoli vedono senza comprendere; non riflettono nella mente a questo fatto	14 his soul being pleasing to the Lord, he has hurried away from the wickedness around him. Yet peoplelook on, uncomprehending; and it does not enter their heads
15 che la grazia e la misericordia sono per i suoi eletti e la protezione per i suoi santi.	15 that grace and mercy await his chosen ones and that he intervenes on behalf of his holy ones.
16 Il giusto defunto condanna gli empi ancora in vita; una giovinezza, giunta in breve alla perfezione, condanna la lunga vecchiaia dell'ingiusto.	16 The upright who dies condemns the godless who survive, and youth quickly perfected condemns thelengthy old age of the wicked.
17 Le folle vedranno la fine del saggio, ma non capiranno ciò che Dio ha deciso a suo riguardo né in vista di che cosa il Signore l'ha posto al sicuro.	17 These people see the end of the wise without understanding what the Lord has in store or why he hastaken such a one to safety;
18 Vedranno e disprezzeranno, ma il Signore li deriderà.	18 they look on and sneer, but the Lord wil laugh at them.
19 Infine diventeranno un cadavere spregevole, oggetto di scherno fra i morti per sempre. Dio infatti li precipiterà muti, a capofitto, e li schianterà dalle fondamenta; saranno del tutto rovinati, si troveranno tra dolori e il loro ricordo perirà.	19 Soon they wil be corpses without honour, objects of horror among the dead for ever. For he wilshatter them and fling them headlong and dumbfounded. He wil shake them from their foundations; they wil beutterly laid waste, a prey to grief, and their memory wil perish.
20 Si presenteranno tremanti al rendiconto dei loro peccati; le loro iniquità si alzeranno contro di essi per accusarli.	20 When the count of their sins has been drawn up, in terror they wil come, and their crimes, confrontingthem, wil accuse them.
