| 1 La parola di Jahvè fu rivolta a Giona, figlio di Amittai: | 1 And the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying: |
| 2 «Orsù, va’ a Ninive la grande città e annuncia in essa che le loro malefatte sono salite al mio cospetto». | 2 Rise and go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach in it. For its malice has ascended before my eyes. |
| 3 Ma Giona si alzò per fuggire a Tarsis, lontano da Jahvè: scese a Giaffa, dove trovò una nave che andava a Tarsis; pagò il prezzo del viaggio e vi entrò, per andare con loro, a Tarsis, lontano da Jahvè. | 3 And Jonah rose in order to flee from the face of the Lord to Tarshish. And he went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. And he paid its fare, and he went down into it, in order to go with them to Tarshish from the face of the Lord. |
| 4 Ma Jahvè scatenò un gran vento sul mare, così che ne nacque una grande burrasca in mare e la nave minacciava di naufragare. | 4 But the Lord sent a great wind into the sea. And a great tempest took place in the sea, and the ship was in danger of being crushed. |
| 5 I marinai ebbero paura è invocarono ognuno il suo dio e buttarono in mare gli arnesi che erano nella nave, per alleggerirsi. Giona, poi, che si era rifugiato nel punto più interno dell’imbarcazione, e lì si era coricato, stava immerso in profondo sonno. | 5 And the mariners were afraid, and the men cried out to their god. And they threw the containers that were in the ship into the sea in order to lighten it of them. And Jonah went down into the interior of the ship, and he fell into a painful deep sleep. |
| 6 Allora il capo della ciurma gli andò vicino e gli disse: «Ma come: tu stai dormendo? Alzati e invoca il tuo Dio! Forse si darà pensiero di noi quel Dio, così che non periamo». | 6 And the helmsman approached him, and he said to him, “Why are you weighed down with sleep? Rise, call upon your God, so perhaps God will be mindful of us and we might not perish.” |
| 7 Si dissero l’un l’altro: «Qua, gettiamo le sorti e sapremo per colpe di chi siamo incorsi in questa disgrazia». Gettarono le sorti e la sorte cadde su Giona. | 7 And a man said to his shipmate, “Come, and let us cast lots, so that we may know why this disaster is upon us.” And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. |
| 8 Allora gli dissero: «Svelaci per colpe di chi siamo incorsi in questa disgrazia: qual è il tuo mestiere e donde vieni? Qual è il tuo paese, di che nazionalità sei?» | 8 And they said to him: “Explain to us what is the reason that this disaster is upon us. What is your work? Which is your country? And where are you going? Or which people are you from?” |
| 9 Egli rispose loro: «Io sono un Ebreo e temo Jahvè, Dio del cielo, che ha fatto il mare e la terra». | 9 And he said to them, “I am Hebrew, and I fear the Lord God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” |
| 10 Quegli uomini furono presi da grande spavento e gli dissero: «Che cosa hai fatto!» Infatti quegli uomini erano venuti a conoscere che egli stava fuggendo lontano da Jahvè: poiché egli lo aveva loro dichiarato. | 10 And the men were greatly afraid, and they said to him, “Why have you done this?” (For the men knew that he was fleeing from the face of the Lord, because he had told them.) |
| 11 «Che cosa dobbiamo farti» gli dissero «perché il mare si calmi e si ritiri da noi?» Difatti il mare andava sempre più facendosi agitato. | 11 And they said to him, “What are we to do with you, so that the sea will cease for us?” For the sea flowed and swelled. |
| 12 Egli disse loro: «Prendetemi e buttatemi in mare: allora il mare si calmerà e si ritirerà da voi. Poiché so bene che per colpa mia vi minaccia questa grande burrasca». | 12 And he said to them, “Take me, and cast me into the sea, and the sea will cease for you. For I know that it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.” |
| 13 Gli uomini a forza di remi cercavano di far ritorno a riva, ma non vi riuscivano, poiché il mare andava sempre più agitandosi e facendosi loro minaccioso. | 13 And the men were rowing, so as to return to dry land, but they did not succeed. For the sea flowed and swelled against them. |
| 14 Gridarono a Jahvè e dissero: «Ah, Jahvè! Che non abbiamo ad affogare noi per la vita di quest’uomo! Non imputare a nostra colpa il sangue innocente: poiché tu, Jahvè, hai agito come ti è piaciuto». | 14 And they cried out to the Lord, and they said, “We beseech you, Lord, do not let us perish for this man’s life, and do not attribute to us innocent blood. For you, Lord, have done just as it pleased you.” |
| 15 Quindi presero Giona e lo buttarono in mare; e il mare si calmò dal suo sdegno. | 15 And they took Jonah and cast him into the sea. And the sea was stilled from its fury. |
| 16 Quegli uomini furono presi da grande timore verso Jahvè: gli offrirono vittime e fecero voti. | 16 And the men feared the Lord greatly, and they sacrificed victims to the Lord, and they made vows. |
