NOVA VULGATANEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Ibi locutus est Dominus ad Moysen dicens:1 The LORD said to Moses,
“ Mitte vi ros, qui considerent terram Chanaan, quam daturus sum filiis Israel, singulos de singulis tribubus ex principibus ”.
"Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."
Fecit Moyses quod Dominus imperaverat, de deserto Pharan mittens principes viros, quorum ista sunt nomina:3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;
de tribu Ruben Sammua filium Zacchur,4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;
de tribu Simeon Saphat filium Hori,5 Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;
de tribu Iudae Chaleb filium Iephonne,6 Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;
de tribu Issachar Igal filium Ioseph,7 Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;
de tribu Ephraim Osee filium Nun,8 Hoshea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim;
de tribu Beniamin Phalti filium Raphu,9 Palti, son of Raphu, of the tribe of Benjamin;
de tribu Zabulon Geddiel filium Sodi,10 Gaddiel, son of Sodi, of the tribe of Zebulun;
de tribu Ioseph, tribu Manasse, Gaddi filium Susi,11 Gaddi, son of Susi, of the tribe of Manasseh, for the Josephites, with
de tribu Dan Ammiel filium Gemalli,12 Ammiel, son of Gemalli, of the tribe of Dan;
de tribu Aser Sthur filium Michael,13 Sethur, son of Michael, of the tribe of Asher;
de tribu Nephthali Nahabi filium Vaphsi,14 Nahbi, son of Vophsi, of the tribe of Naphtali;
de tribu Gad Guel filium Machi.15 Geuel, son of Machi, of the tribe of Gad.
Vocavitque Osee filium Nun Iosue.
These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.
Cumque veneritis ad montes,17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,
considerate terram, qualis sit, et populum, qui habitator est eius, utrum fortis sit an infirmus, si pauci numero an plures;18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?
ipsa terra bona an mala, urbes quales, absque muris an muratae;19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?
humus pinguis an sterilis, nemorosa an absque arboribus. Confortamini et afferte nobis de fructibus terrae ”. Erat autem tempus, quando iam praecoquae uvae vesci possunt.
Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.
Cumque ascendissent, exploraverunt terram a deserto Sin usque Rohob in introitu Emath.21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.
Nam Hebron septem annis ante Tanim urbem Aegypti condita est.22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
Pergentesque usque ad Nehelescol absciderunt palmitem cum uva sua, quem portaverunt in vecte duo viri. De malis quoque granatis et de ficis loci illius tulerunt,23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.
It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.
Reversique exploratores terrae post quadraginta dies, omni regione circuita,25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,
Locutique eis et omni congregationi ostenderunt fructus terrae26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.
They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.
Stirpem Enac vidimus ibi;28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.
Amalec habitat in Nageb, Hetthaeus et Iebusaeus et Amorraeus in montanis, Chananaeus vero moratur iuxta mare et circa fluenta Iordanis ”.
Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."
Inter haec Chaleb compescens murmur populi, qui oriebatur contra Moysen, ait: “ Ascendamus et possideamus terram, quoniam poterimus obtinere eam ”.30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."
Alii vero, qui fuerant cum eo, dicebant: “ Nequaquam ad hunc populum valemus ascendere, quia fortior nobis est ”.31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."
So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,
ibi vidimus gigantes, filios Enac de genere giganteo, quibus comparati quasi locustae videbamur ”.
veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."
