NOVA VULGATANEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Anno tertio regni Ioachim regis Iudae venit Nabuchodonosor rex BabylonisIerusalem et obsedit eam;1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came and laid siege to Jerusalem.
et tradidit Dominus in manu eius Ioachim regem Iudaeet partem vasorum domus Dei, et asportavit ea in terram Sennaar in domum deorumsuorum et vasa intulit in domum thesauri deorum suorum.
The Lord handed over to him Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and some of the vessels of the temple of God, which he carried off to the land of Shinar, and placed in the temple treasury of his god.
Et ait rex Asfanaz praeposito eunuchorum suorum, ut introduceret de filiisIsrael et de semine regio et tyrannorum3 The king told Ashpenaz, his chief chamberlain, to bring in some of the Israelites of royal blood and of the nobility,
pueros, in quibus nulla esset macula,decoros forma et eruditos omni sapientia, cautos scientia et doctos disciplina,et qui possent stare in palatio regis, et ut docerent eos litteras et linguamChaldaeorum.4 young men without any defect, handsome, intelligent and wise, quick to learn, and prudent in judgment, such as could take their place in the king's palace; they were to be taught the language and literature of the Chaldeans;
Et constituit eis rex annonam per singulos dies de cibis suis etde vino, unde bibebat ipse, ut enutriti tribus annis postea starent in conspecturegis.5 after three years' training they were to enter the king's service. The king allotted them a daily portion of food and wine from the royal table.
Fuerunt ergo inter eos de filiis Iudae Daniel, Ananias, Misael etAzarias.6 Among these were men of Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
Et imposuit eis praepositus eunuchorum nomina: Danieli Baltassar etAnaniae Sedrac, Misaeli Misac et Azariae Abdenago.
The chief chamberlain changed their names: Daniel to Belteshazzar, Hananiah to Shadrach, Mishael to Meshach, and Azariah to Abednego.
Proposuit autem Daniel in corde suo, ne pollueretur de mensa regis neque devino potus eius, et rogavit eunuchorum praepositum, ne contaminaretur.8 But Daniel was resolved not to defile himself with the king's food or wine; so he begged the chief chamberlain to spare him this defilement.
Deditautem Deus Danieli gratiam et misericordiam in conspectu principis eunuchorum;9 Though God had given Daniel the favor and sympathy of the chief chamberlain,
et ait princeps eunuchorum ad Daniel: “ Timeo ego dominum meum regem, quiconstituit vobis cibum et potum; qui si viderit vultus vestros macilentioresprae ceteris adulescentibus coaevis vestris, condemnabitis caput meum regi ”.10 he nevertheless said to Daniel, "I am afraid of my lord the king; it is he who allotted your food and drink. If he sees that you look wretched by comparison with the other young men of your age, you will endanger my life with the king."
Et dixit Daniel ad custodem, quem constituerat princeps eunuchorum superDaniel, Ananiam, Misael et Azariam:11 Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief chamberlain had put in charge of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
“ Tenta nos, obsecro, servos tuosdiebus decem, et dentur nobis legumina ad vescendum et aqua ad bibendum;12 "Please test your servants for ten days. Give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.
etvideantur in conspectu tuo vultus nostri et vultus puerorum, qui vescuntur ciboregio, et, sicut videris, facies cum servis tuis ”.13 Then see how we look in comparison with the other young men who eat from the royal table, and treat your servants according to what you see."
Qui, audito sermone huiuscemodi, tentavit eos diebus decem.14 He acceded to this request, and tested them for ten days;
Post diesautem decem apparuerunt vultus eorum meliores et corpulentiores prae omnibuspueris, qui vescebantur cibo regio.15 after ten days they looked healthier and better fed than any of the young men who ate from the royal table.
Porro custos tollebat cibaria et vinum potus eorum dabatque eis legumina.16 So the steward continued to take away the food and wine they were to receive, and gave them vegetables.
Quattuor autem pueris his dedit Deus scientiam et disciplinam in omniscriptura et sapientia, Danieli autem intellegentiam omnium visionum etsomniorum.17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and proficiency in all literature and science, and to Daniel the understanding of all visions and dreams.
Completis itaque diebus, post quos dixerat rex, utintroducerentur, introduxit eos praepositus eunuchorum in conspectuNabuchodonosor.18 At the end of the time the king had specified for their preparation, the chief chamberlain brought them before Nebuchadnezzar.
Cumque locutus eis fuisset rex, non sunt inventi de universistales ut Daniel, Ananias, Misael et Azarias; et steterunt in conspectu regis.19 When the king had spoken with all of them, none was found equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; and so they entered the king's service.
Et omne verbum sapientiae et intellectus, quod sciscitatus est ab eis, rexinvenit in eis decuplum super cunctos hariolos et magos, qui erant in universoregno eius.20 In any question of wisdom or prudence which the king put to them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his kingdom.
Fuit autem Daniel usque ad annum primum Cyri regis.
Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.
