NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Et factum est in anno quarto Ioachim filii Iosiae regis Iudae, factumest verbum hoc ad Ieremiam a Domino dicens:1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh,
“ Tolle volumen libri et scribesin eo omnia verba, quae locutus sum tibi adversum Israel et Iudam et adversumomnes gentes a die qua locutus sum ad te ex diebus Iosiae usque ad diem hanc,2 'Take a scroll and on it write al the words I have spoken to you about Israel, Judah and al the nations, from the day I first spoke to you, in the time of Josiah, until today.
Perhaps when the House of Judah hears about al the disaster I intend to inflict on them, they will turn, each one of them, from their evil behaviour, so that I can forgive their sinful guilt.'
Vocavit ergo Ieremias Baruch filium Neriae; et scripsit Baruch ex ore Ieremiaeomnes sermones Domini, quos locutus est ad eum, in volumine libri.4 Jeremiah then summoned Baruch son of Neriah, who at his dictation wrote down on the scrol all thewords Yahweh had spoken to him.
Etpraecepit Ieremias Baruch dicens: “ Ego impeditus sum nec valeo ingredi domumDomini.5 Jeremiah then gave Baruch this order, 'As I am prevented from entering the Temple of Yahweh,
Ingredere ergo tu et lege de volumine, in quo scripsisti ex ore meoverba Domini, audiente populo in domo Domini, in die ieiunii; insuper etaudiente universo Iuda, qui veniunt de civitatibus suis, leges eis,6 you yourself must go and, from the scrol you wrote at my dictation, read all Yahweh's words to thepeople in his Temple on the day of the fast, and in this way you can read them in the hearing also of all theJudaeans who come in from their towns.
Perhaps their prayers wil move Yahweh and they wil turn one and al from their evil behaviour, forgreat is the furious anger with which Yahweh has threatened this people.'
Baruch son of Neriah duly carried out the order that the prophet Jeremiah had given him, to read alYahweh's words from the book in his Temple.
Factum est autem in anno quinto Ioachim filii Iosiae regis Iudae, in mensenono, praedicaverunt ieiunium in conspectu Domini omni populo in Ierusalem etuniversae multitudini, quae confluxerat de civitatibus Iudae in Ierusalem.9 Now, in the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, al the people ofJerusalem and all the people who could get to Jerusalem from the towns of Judah were summoned to a fastbefore Yahweh.
Legitque Baruch ex volumine sermones Ieremiae in domo Domini, in exedra Gamariaefilii Saphan scribae in vestibulo superiore, in introitu portae Novae domusDomini, audiente omni populo.10 Baruch then read Jeremiah's words from the book; this happened in the room of Gemariah son of thescribe Shaphan, in the upper court at the entry of the New Gate of the Temple of Yahweh, where all the peoplecould hear.
Cumque audisset Michaeas filius Gamariae filii Saphan omnes sermones Dominiex libro,11 Micaiah son of Gemariah, son of Shaphan, having heard all Yahweh's words read from the book,
descendit in domum regis ad exedram scribae; et ecce ibi omnesprincipes sedebant: Elisama scriba et Dalaias filius Semiae et Elnathan filiusAchobor et Gamarias filius Saphan et Sedecias filius Hananiae et universiprincipes.12 went down to the royal palace, to the scribe's room. Al the chief men were in session: the scribeElishama, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son ofHananiah and al the other chief men;
Et nuntiavit eis Michaeas omnia verba, quae audivit, legenteBaruch ex volumine in auribus populi.13 and to them Micaiah reported al the words he heard as Baruch was reading the book aloud to thepeople.
Miserunt itaque omnes principes adBaruch Iudi filium Nathaniae filii Selemiae filii Chusi dicentes: “ Volumen,ex quo legisti audiente populo, sume in manu tua et veni ”. Tulit ergo Baruchfilius Neriae volumen in manu sua et venit ad eos.14 The chief men then by common consent sent Jehudi son of Netaniah to Baruch, with Shelemiah sonof Cushi, to say, 'Come, and bring the scrol with you which you have been reading to the people.'
Et dixerunt ad eum: “Sede et lege haec in auribus nostris ”; et legit Baruch in auribus eorum.15 Bringing the scrol with him, Baruch son of Neriah appeared before them. 'Sit down,' they said, 'andread it out.' So Baruch read it to them.
Igitur cum audissent omnia verba, obstupuerunt unusquisque ad proximum suum; etdixerunt ad Baruch: “Nuntiare debemus regi omnes sermones istos”.16 Having heard al the words they turned to one another in alarm and said to Baruch, 'We must certainlyinform the king of this.'
Etinterrogaverunt Baruch dicentes: “ Indica nobis, quomodo scripsisti omnessermones istos ex ore eius ”.17 They then questioned Baruch, 'Tel us', they said, 'how you came to write al these words.'
Dixit autem eis Baruch: “ Ex ore suoloquebatur ad me omnes sermones istos, et ego scribebam in volumine atramento”.18 'Jeremiah dictated them al to me,' Baruch replied, 'and I wrote them down in ink in this book.'
Et dixerunt principes ad Baruch: “ Vade et abscondere, tu et Ieremias,et nemo sciat, ubi sitis ”.19 The chief men said to Baruch, 'You and Jeremiah had better go into hiding; and do not tel anyonewhere you are.'
Whereupon they went off to the king in the palace court, depositing the scrol in the room of the scribeElishama. They then informed the king of the whole affair.
The king sent Jehudi for the scrol , and he brought it from the room of the scribe Elishama and read itto the king and all the chief men standing round the king.
Rex autem sedebat in domo hiemali in mense nono, et posita erat arula corameo plena prunis;22 The king was sitting in his winter apartments -- it was the ninth month -- with a fire burning in a brazierin front of him.
Each time Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut them off with a scribe's knife and threwthem into the fire in the brazier until the whole of the scrol had been burnt in the brazier fire.
Et non timuerunt nequesciderunt vestimenta sua rex et omnes servi eius, qui audierunt universossermones istos.24 But in spite of hearing al these words, neither the king nor any of his courtiers took alarm or tore theirclothes;
Verumtamen Elnathan et Dalaias et Gamarias instanterrogaverunt regem, ne combureret librum, et non audivit eos.25 and although Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had urged the king not to burn the scrol he wouldnot listen to them,
but ordered the king's son Jerahmeel and Seraiah son of Azriel and Shelemiah son of Abdeel toarrest the scribe Baruch and the prophet Jeremiah. But Yahweh had hidden them.
Et factum est verbum Domini ad Ieremiam, postquam combusserat rex volumen etsermones, quos scripserat Baruch ex ore Ieremiae, dicens:27 Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, after the king had burnt the scrol containing the wordsBaruch had written at Jeremiah's dictation,
“Rursum tollevolumen aliud et scribe in eo omnes sermones priores, qui erant in primovolumine, quod combussit Ioachim rex Iudae.28 'Take another scroll and write down all the words that were written on the first scrol burnt byJehoiakim king of Judah.
Et super Ioachim regem Iudaedices: Haec dicit Dominus: Tu combussisti volumen illud dicens: “Quarescripsisti in eo annuntians: Certe veniet rex Babylonis et vastabit terram hancet cessare faciet ex illa hominem et iumentum?”.29 And as regards Jehoiakim king of Judah, you are to say, "Yahweh says this: You have burnt thatscrol , saying: Why have you written down: The king of Babylon will certainly come and lay this country wasteand leave it without human or animal?
So, this is what Yahweh says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: He wil have no one to occupy thethrone of David, and his corpse wil be tossed out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night.
I shal punish him, his offspring and his courtiers for their guilt; on them, on the citizens of Jerusalemand on the people of Judah I shal bring the total disaster which I had decreed for them but to which they havepaid no attention."
Jeremiah then took another scrol and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, who in it atJeremiah's dictation wrote all the words of the book that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burnt, with many similarwords in addition.
