33 Factum est autem, cum audisset Sanaballat quod aedificaremus murum, iratusest et indignatus est nimis et subsannavit Iudaeos33 When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, it roused his anger and he became very much incensed. He ridiculed the Jews,
34 et dixit coram fratribussuis et optimatibus Samariae: “ Quid Iudaei faciunt imbecilles? Num hocconceditur eis? Num, quia sacrificant, complebunt in una die? Numquid vivificarepoterunt lapides de acervis pulveris, qui combusti sunt? ”.34 saying in the presence of his brethren and the troops of Samaria: "What are these miserable Jews trying to do? Will they complete their restoration in a single day? Will they recover these stones, burnt as they are, from the heaps of dust?"
35 Sed et ThobiasAmmanites, qui erat ad latus eius, ait: “ Sine aedificare; si ascenderitvulpes, diruet murum eorum lapideum ”.
35 Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said: "It is a rubble heap they are building. Any fox that attacked it would breach their wall of stones!"
36 Audi, Deus noster, quia facti sumus irrisio! Converte contumeliam eorum supercaput eorum et da eos in irrisionem in terra captivitatis!36 Take note, O our God, how we were mocked! Turn back their derision upon their own heads and let them be carried away to a land of captivity!
37 Ne operiasiniquitatem eorum, et peccatum eorum coram facie tua non deleatur, quiaoffenderunt te coram aedificantibus.
37 Hide not their crime and let not their sin be blotted out in your sight, for they insulted the builders to their face!
38 Itaque aedificavimus murum, et compositus est totus murus usque ad partemdimidiam, et populus dabat cor suum, ut operaretur.
38 We, however, continued to build the wall, which was soon filled in and completed up to half its height. The people worked with a will.
