BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 L’anno terzo del regno di Ioiakìm, re di Giuda, Nabucodònosor, re di Babilonia, marciò su Gerusalemme e la cinse d’assedio.	1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched onJerusalem and besieged it.
2 Il Signore diede Ioiakìm, re di Giuda, nelle sue mani, insieme con una parte degli arredi del tempio di Dio, ed egli li trasportò nel paese di Sinar, nel tempio del suo dio, e li depositò nel tesoro del tempio del suo dio.	2 The Lord let Jehoiakim king of Judah fal into his power, as well as some of the vessels belonging to theTemple of God. These he took away to Shinar, putting the vessels into the treasury of his own gods.
3 Il re ordinò ad Asfenàz, capo dei suoi funzionari di corte, di condurgli giovani israeliti di stirpe regale o di famiglia nobile,	3 From the Israelites, the king ordered Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring a certain number of boys ofroyal or noble descent;
4 senza difetti, di bell’aspetto, dotati di ogni sapienza, istruiti, intelligenti e tali da poter stare nella reggia, e di insegnare loro la scrittura e la lingua dei Caldei.	4 they had to be without any physical defect, of good appearance, versed in every branch of wisdom,wel -informed, discerning, suitable for service at the royal court. Ashpenaz was to teach them to speak and writethe language of the Chaldaeans.
5 Il re assegnò loro una razione giornaliera delle sue vivande e del vino che egli beveva; dovevano essere educati per tre anni, al termine dei quali sarebbero entrati al servizio del re.	5 The king assigned them a daily allowance of food and wine from the royal table. They were to receive an education lasting for three years, after which they would enter the royal service.
6 Fra loro vi erano alcuni Giudei: Daniele, Anania, Misaele e Azaria;	6 Among them were the Judaeans Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.
7 però il capo dei funzionari di corte diede loro altri nomi, chiamando Daniele Baltassàr, Anania Sadrac, Misaele Mesac e Azaria Abdènego.	7 The chief eunuch gave them other names, cal ing Daniel Belteshazzar, Hananiah Shadrach, MishaelMeshach, and Azariah Abed-Nego.
8 Ma Daniele decise in cuor suo di non contaminarsi con le vivande del re e con il vino dei suoi banchetti e chiese al capo dei funzionari di non obbligarlo a contaminarsi.	8 Daniel, who was determined not to incur pol ution by food and wine from the royal table, begged thechief eunuch to spare him this defilement.
9 Dio fece sì che Daniele incontrasse la benevolenza e la simpatia del capo dei funzionari.	9 God al owed Daniel to receive faithful love and sympathy from the chief eunuch.
10 Però egli disse a Daniele: «Io temo che il re, mio signore, che ha stabilito quello che dovete mangiare e bere, trovi le vostre facce più magre di quelle degli altri giovani della vostra età e così mi rendereste responsabile davanti al re».	10 But the eunuch warned Daniel, 'I am afraid of my lord the king: he has assigned you food and drink,and if he sees you looking thinner in the face than the other boys of your age, my head wil be in danger with theking because of you.'
11 Ma Daniele disse al custode, al quale il capo dei funzionari aveva affidato Daniele, Anania, Misaele e Azaria:	11 To the guard assigned to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah by the chief eunuch, Daniel thensaid,
12 «Mettici alla prova per dieci giorni, dandoci da mangiare verdure e da bere acqua,	12 'Please al ow your servants a ten days' trial, during which we are given only vegetables to eat andwater to drink.
13 poi si confrontino, alla tua presenza, le nostre facce con quelle dei giovani che mangiano le vivande del re; quindi deciderai di fare con i tuoi servi come avrai constatato».	13 You can then compare our looks with those of the boys who eat the king's food; go by what you see,and treat your servants accordingly.'
14 Egli acconsentì e fece la prova per dieci giorni,	14 The man agreed to do what they asked and put them on ten days' trial.
15 al termine dei quali si vide che le loro facce erano più belle e più floride di quelle di tutti gli altri giovani che mangiavano le vivande del re.	15 When the ten days were over, they looked better and fatter than any of the boys who had eaten theiral owance from the royal table;
16 Da allora in poi il sovrintendente fece togliere l’assegnazione delle vivande e del vino che bevevano, e diede loro soltanto verdure.	16 so the guard withdrew their al owance of food and the wine they were to drink, and gave themvegetables.
17 Dio concesse a questi quattro giovani di conoscere e comprendere ogni scrittura e ogni sapienza, e rese Daniele interprete di visioni e di sogni.	17 To these four boys God gave knowledge and skil in every aspect of literature and learning; Danielalso had the gift of interpreting every kind of vision and dream.
18 Terminato il tempo, stabilito dal re, entro il quale i giovani dovevano essergli presentati, il capo dei funzionari li portò a Nabucodònosor.	18 When the time stipulated by the king for the boys to be presented to him came round, the chiefeunuch presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.
19 Il re parlò con loro, ma fra tutti non si trovò nessuno pari a Daniele, Anania, Misaele e Azaria, i quali rimasero al servizio del re;	19 The king conversed with them, and among all the boys found none to equal Daniel, Hananiah, Mishaeland Azariah. So they became members of the king's court,
20 su qualunque argomento in fatto di sapienza e intelligenza il re li interrogasse, li trovava dieci volte superiori a tutti i maghi e indovini che c’erano in tutto il suo regno.	20 and on whatever point of wisdom or understanding he might question them, he found them ten timesbetter than all the magicians and soothsayers in his entire kingdom. Daniel remained there until the first year ofKing Cyrus.
21 Così Daniele vi rimase fino al primo anno del re Ciro.
