1 Non ti vantare del domani, perché non sai neppure che cosa genera l'oggi.	1 Boast not of tomorrow, for you know not what any day may bring forth.
2 Ti lodi un altro e non la tua bocca, un estraneo e non le tue labbra.	2 Let another praise you--not your own mouth; Someone else--not your own lips.
3 La pietra è greve, la sabbia è pesante, ma più dell'una e dell'altra lo è il fastidio dello stolto.	3 Stone is heavy, and sand a burden, but a fool's provocation is heavier than both.
4 La collera è crudele, l'ira è impetuosa; ma chi può resistere alla gelosia?	4 Anger is relentless, and wrath overwhelming-- but before jealousy who can stand?
5 Meglio un rimprovero aperto che un amore celato.	5 Better is an open rebuke than a love that remains hidden.
6 Leali sono le ferite di un amico, fallaci i baci di un nemico.	6 Wounds from a friend may be accepted as well meant, but the greetings of an enemy one prays against.
7 Gola sazia disprezza il miele; per chi ha fame anche l'amaro è dolce.	7 One who is full, tramples on virgin honey; but to the man who is hungry, any bitter thing is sweet.
8 Come un uccello che vola lontano dal nido così è l'uomo che va errando lontano dalla dimora.	8 Like a bird that is far from its nest is a man who is far from his home.
9 Il profumo e l'incenso allietano il cuore, la dolcezza di un amico rassicura l'anima.	9 Perfume and incense gladden the heart, but by grief the soul is torn asunder.
10 Non abbandonare il tuo amico né quello di tuo padre, non entrare nella casa di tuo fratello nel giorno della tua disgrazia. Meglio un amico vicino che un fratello lontano.	10 Your own friend and your father's friend forsake not; but if ruin befalls you, enter not a kinsman's house. Better is a neighbor near at hand than a brother far away.
11 Sii saggio, figlio mio, e allieterai il mio cuore e avrò di che rispondere a colui che mi insulta.	11 If you are wise, my son, you will gladden my heart, and I will be able to rebut him who tuants me.
12 L'accorto vede il pericolo e si nasconde, gli inesperti vanno avanti e la pagano.	12 The shrewd man perceives evil and hides; simpletons continue on and suffer the penalty.
13 Prendigli il vestito perché si è fatto garante per uno straniero e tienilo in pegno per gli sconosciuti.	13 Take his garment who becomes surety for another, and for the sake of a stranger, yield it up!
14 Benedire il prossimo di buon mattino ad alta voce gli sarà imputato come una maledizione.	14 When one greets his neighbor with a loud voice in the early morning, a curse can be laid to his charge.
15 Il gocciolar continuo in tempo di pioggia e una moglie litigiosa, si rassomigliano:	15 For a persistent leak on a rainy day the match is a quarrelsome woman.
16 chi la vuol trattenere, trattiene il vento e raccoglie l'olio con la mano destra.	16 He who keeps her stores up a stormwind; he cannot tell north from south.
17 Il ferro si aguzza con il ferro e l'uomo aguzza l'ingegno del suo compagno.	17 As iron sharpens iron, so man sharpens his fellow man.
18 Il guardiano di un fico ne mangia i frutti, chi ha cura del suo padrone ne riceverà onori.	18 He who tends a fig tree eats its fruit, and he who is attentive to his master will be enriched.
19 Come un volto differisce da un altro, così i cuori degli uomini differiscono fra di loro.	19 As one face differs from another, so does one human heart from another.
20 Come gli inferi e l'abisso non si saziano mai, così non si saziano mai gli occhi dell'uomo.	20 The nether world and the abyss are never satisfied; so too the eyes of men.
21 Come il crogiuolo è per l'argento e il fornello per l'oro, così l'uomo rispetto alla bocca di chi lo loda.	21 As the crucible tests silver and the furnace gold, so a man is tested by the praise he receives.
22 Anche se tu pestassi lo stolto nel mortaio tra i grani con il pestello, non scuoteresti da lui la sua stoltezza.	22 Though you should pound the fool to bits with the pestle, amid the grits in a mortar, his folly would not go out of him.
23 Preòccupati del tuo gregge, abbi cura delle tue mandrie,	23 Take good care of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds;
24 perché non sono perenni le ricchezze, né un tesoro si trasmette di generazione in generazione.	24 For wealth lasts not forever, nor even a crown from age to age.
25 Si toglie il fieno, apparisce l'erba nuova e si raccolgono i foraggi dei monti;	25 When the grass is taken away and the aftergrowth appears, and the mountain greens are gathered in,
26 gli agnelli ti danno le vesti e i capretti il prezzo per comprare un campo,	26 The lambs will provide you with clothing, and the goats will bring the price of a field,
27 le capre latte abbondante per il cibo e per vitto della tua famiglia. e per mantenere le tue schiave.	27 And there will be ample goat's milk to supply you, to supply your household, and maintenance for your maidens.
