BIBBIA CEI 1974	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Un buon nome val più di grandi ricchezze e la benevolenza altrui più dell'argento e dell'oro.	1 Fame is preferable to great wealth, favour, to silver and gold.
2 Il ricco e il povero si incontrano, il Signore ha creato l'uno e l'altro.	2 Rich and poor rub shoulders, Yahweh has made them both.
3 L'accorto vede il pericolo e si nasconde, gli inesperti vanno avanti e la pagano.	3 The discreet sees danger and takes shelter, simpletons go ahead and pay the penalty.
4 Frutti dell'umiltà sono il timore di Dio, la ricchezza, l'onore e la vita.	4 The reward of humility is the fear of Yahweh, and riches, honour and life.
5 Spine e tranelli sono sulla via del perverso; chi ha cura di se stesso sta lontano.	5 Thorns and snares line the path of the wilful, whoever values life will stay at a distance.
6 Abitua il giovane secondo la via da seguire; neppure da vecchio se ne allontanerà.	6 Give a lad a training suitable to his character and, even when old, he wil not go back on it.
7 Il ricco domina sul povero e chi riceve prestiti è schiavo del suo creditore.	7 The rich lords it over the poor, the borrower is the lender's slave.
8 Chi semina l'ingiustizia raccoglie la miseria e il bastone a servizio della sua collera svanirà.	8 Whoever sows injustice reaps disaster, and the rod of such anger wil disappear.
9 Chi ha l'occhio generoso sarà benedetto, perché egli dona del suo pane al povero.	9 A kindly eye wil earn a blessing, such a person shares out food with the poor.
10 Scaccia il beffardo e la discordia se ne andrà e cesseranno i litigi e gli insulti.	10 Expel the mocker and strife goes too, law-suits and dislike die down.
11 Il Signore ama chi è puro di cuore e chi ha la grazia sulle labbra è amico del re.	11 Whoever loves the pure of heart and is gracious of speech has the king for a friend.
12 Gli occhi del Signore proteggono la scienza ed egli confonde le parole del perfido.	12 Yahweh's eyes protect knowledge, but he confounds deceitful speeches.
13 Il pigro dice: "C'è un leone là fuori: sarei ucciso in mezzo alla strada".	13 'There is a lion outside,' says the idler, 'I shal be kil ed in the street!'
14 La bocca delle straniere è una fossa profonda, chi è in ira al Signore vi cade.	14 The mouth of an adulterous woman is a deep pit, into it fal s the man whom Yahweh rebukes.
15 La stoltezza è legata al cuore del fanciullo, ma il bastone della correzione l'allontanerà da lui.	15 Fol y is anchored in the heart of a youth, the whip of instruction wil rid him of it.
16 Opprimere il povero non fa che arricchirlo, dare a un ricco non fa che impoverirlo.	16 Harsh treatment enriches the poor, but a gift impoverishes the rich.
17 Porgi l'orecchio e ascolta le parole dei sapienti e applica la tua mente alla mia istruzione,	17 Give ear, listen to the sayings of the sages, and apply your heart to what I know,
18 perché ti sarà piacevole custodirle nel tuo intimo e averle tutte insieme pronte sulle labbra.	18 for it wil be a delight to keep them deep within you to have them al ready on your lips.
19 Perché la tua fiducia sia riposta nel Signore, voglio indicarti oggi la tua strada.	19 So that your trust may be in Yahweh, it is you whom I wish to instruct today.
20 Non ti ho scritto forse trenta tra consigli e istruzioni,	20 Have I not written for you thirty chapters of advice and knowledge,
21 perché tu sappia esprimere una parola giusta e rispondere con parole sicure a chi ti interroga?	21 to make you know the certainty of true sayings, so that you can return with sound answers to thosewho sent you?
22 Non depredare il povero, perché egli è povero, e non affliggere il misero in tribunale,	22 Do not despoil the weak, for he is weak, and do not oppress the poor at the gate,
23 perché il Signore difenderà la loro causa e spoglierà della vita coloro che li hanno spogliati.	23 for Yahweh takes up their cause, and extorts the life of their extortioners.
24 Non ti associare a un collerico e non praticare un uomo iracondo,	24 Do not make friends with one who gives way to anger, make no one quick-tempered a companion ofyours,
25 per non imparare i suoi costumi e procurarti una trappola per la tua vita.	25 for fear you learn such behaviour and in it find a snare for yourself.
26 Non essere di quelli che si fanno garanti o che s'impegnano per debiti altrui,	26 Do not be one of those who go guarantor, who go surety for debts:
27 perché, se poi non avrai da pagare, ti si toglierà il letto di sotto a te.	27 if you have no means of paying your bed wil be taken from under you.
28 Non spostare il confine antico, posto dai tuoi padri.	28 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone set by your ancestors.
29 Hai visto un uomo sollecito nel lavoro? Egli si sistemerà al servizio del re, non resterà al servizio di persone oscure.	29 You see someone alert at his business? His aim wil be to serve kings; not for him the service of theobscure.
