| 4 depuis celui qui porte la pourpre et la couronne jusqu'à celui qui est vêtu d'étoffe grossière,ce n'est que fureur, envie, trouble, inquiétude, crainte de la mort, rivalités et querelles. | 4 from the man who wears purple and a crown to the one who is clothed in burlap; |
| 5 Et à l'heure où, couché, l'on repose, le sommeil de la nuit ne fait que varier les soucis: | 5 there is anger and envy and trouble and unrest, and fear of death, and fury and strife. And when one rests upon his bed, his sleep at night confuses his mind. |
| 6 à peine a-t-on trouvé le repos qu'aussitôt, dormant, comme en plein jour, on est agité decauchemars, comme un fuyard échappé du combat. | 6 He gets little or no rest, and afterward in his sleep, as though he were on watch, he is troubled by the visions of his mind like one who has escaped from the battle-front; |
| 7 Au moment de la délivrance on s'éveille, tout surpris que sa peur soit vaine. | 7 at the moment of his rescue he wakes up, and wonders that his fear came to nothing. |
| 8 Pour toute créature, de l'homme à la bête, mais pour les pécheurs, au septuple, | 8 With all flesh, both man and beast, and upon sinners seven times more, |
| 9 la mort, le sang, la querelle et l'épée, malheurs, famine, tribulation, calamité! | 9 are death and bloodshed and strife and sword, calamities, famine and affliction and plague. |
| 10 Tout cela a été créé pour les pécheurs, et c'est à cause d'eux que vint le déluge. | 10 All these were created for the wicked, and on their account the flood came. |
| 11 Tout ce qui vient de la terre retourne à la terre, et ce qui vient de l'eau fait retour à la mer. | 11 All things that are from the earth turn back to the earth, and what is from the waters returns to the sea. |
| 12 Les pots-de-vin et les injustices disparaîtront, mais la bonne foi tiendra éternellement. | 12 All bribery and injustice will be blotted out, but good faith will stand for ever. |
| 13 Les richesses mal acquises s'évanouiront comme un torrent, comme le coup de tonnerre quiéclate pendant l'averse. | 13 The wealth of the unjust will dry up like a torrent, and crash like a loud clap of thunder in a rain. |
| 14 Quand il ouvre les mains il se réjouit, ainsi les pécheurs iront à la ruine. | 14 A generous man will be made glad; likewise transgressors will utterly fail. |
| 15 Les rejetons des impies sont pauvres de rameaux, les racines impures ne trouvent qu'âprerocher. | 15 The children of the ungodly will not put forth many branches; they are unhealthy roots upon sheer rock. |
| 16 Le roseau qui abonde sur toutes les eaux et sur les bords du fleuve sera arraché le premier. | 16 The reeds by any water or river bank will be plucked up before any grass. |
| 17 La charité est comme un paradis de bénédiction et l'aumône demeure à jamais. | 17 Kindness is like a garden of blessings, and almsgiving endures for ever. |
| 18 L'homme indépendant et le travailleur ont la vie douce; mieux loti encore celui qui trouveun trésor. | 18 Life is sweet for the self-reliant and the worker, but he who finds treasure is better off than both. |
| 19 Des enfants et une ville fondée perpétuent un nom; mieux encore apprécie-t-on une femmeparfaite. | 19 Children and the building of a city establish a man's name, but a blameless wife is accounted better than both. |
| 20 Le vin et les arts mettent la joie au coeur; mieux encore l'amour de la sagesse. | 20 Wine and music gladden the heart, but the love of wisdom is better than both. |
| 21 La flûte et la cithare agrémentent le chant; mieux encore une voix mélodieuse. | 21 The flute and the harp make pleasant melody, but a pleasant voice is better than both. |

| 23 Ami et camarade se rencontrent au bon moment; mieux encore la femme et l'homme. | 23 A friend or a companion never meets one amiss, but a wife with her husband is better than both. |
| 24 Frères et protecteurs sont utiles aux mauvais jours; mieux encore l'aumône tire d'affaire. | 24 Brothers and help are for a time of trouble, but almsgiving rescues better than both. |
| 25 L'or et l'argent rendent la démarche ferme; mieux encore estime-t-on le conseil. | 25 Gold and silver make the foot stand sure, but good counsel is esteemed more than both. |
| 26 La richesse et la force donnent un coeur assuré; mieux encore la crainte du Seigneur. Avecla crainte du Seigneur rien ne manque; avec elle on n'a pas à chercher d'appui. | 26 Riches and strength lift up the heart, but the fear of the Lord is better than both. There is no loss in the fear of the Lord, and with it there is no need to seek for help. |
| 27 La crainte du Seigneur est un paradis de bénédiction; mieux que toute gloire elle protège. | 27 The fear of the Lord is like a garden of blessing, and covers a man better than any glory. |
| 28 Mon fils, ne vis pas de mendicité, mieux vaut mourir que mendier. | 28 My son, do not lead the life of a beggar; it is better to die than to beg. |
| 29 L'homme qui louche vers la table d'autrui, sa vie ne saurait passer pour une vie. Il sesouille la gorge de nourritures étrangères, un homme instruit et bien élevé s'en gardera. | 29 When a man looks to the table of another, his existence cannot be considered as life. He pollutes himself with another man's food, but a man who is intelligent and well instructed guards against that. |
