1 Do you know when mountain goats give birth? Have you ever watched deer in labour?	1 Sabes o tempo em que as cabras monteses dão cria nos rochedos? Observaste o parto das corças?
2 Have you ever counted the months that they carry their young? Do you know when they give birth?	2 Contaste os meses de sua gravidez e sabes o tempo de seu parto?
3 They crouch to drop their young, they get rid of their burdens	3 Elas se agacham, dão cria e se livram de suas dores.
4 and the calves, having grown big and strong, go off into the desert and never come back to them.	4 Seus filhotes tornam-se fortes e crescem nos campos, apartam-se delas e não voltam mais a elas.
5 Who has given the wild donkey his freedom, who has undone the harness of the brayer?	5 Quem pôs o jumento selvagem em liberdade e quem rompeu os laços do asno veloz?
6 I have given him the wastelands as his home, the salt plain as his habitat.	6 Dei-lhe o deserto por morada e a planície salgada como lugar de habitação.
7 He scorns the turmoil of the town, obeys no donkey-man's shouts.	7 Ele se ri do tumulto da cidade e não escuta os gritos do tropeiro.
8 The mountains are the pastures that he ranges in quest of anything green.	8 Explora as montanhas da sua pastagem e nela anda buscando tudo o que é verde.
9 Is the wild ox willing to serve you or spend a night beside your manger?	9 Quererá servir-te o boi selvagem ou passará a noite em teu estábulo?
10 If you tie a rope round his neck wil he harrow the furrows for you?	10 Podes prendê-lo com uma corda em seu pescoço ou fenderá ele atrás de ti os teus sulcos?
11 Can you rely on his massive strength and leave him to do your heavy work?	11 Fiarás nele porque sua força é grande e lhe deixarás a seu cuidado o teu trabalho?
12 Can you depend on him to come home and pile your grain on your threshing-floor?	12 Confiarás nele para que te traga para a casa o que semeaste e que te encha a tua eira?
13 Can the wing of the ostrich be compared with the plumage of stork or falcon?	13 O avestruz bate as asas alegremente, não tem asas nem penas de bondade?
14 She leaves her eggs on the ground with only earth to warm them;	14 Abandona os seus ovos na terra e os deixa aquecer no solo,
15 forgetting that a foot may tread on them or a wild animal crush them.	15 esquecendo-se que um pé poderá esmagá-los ou que animais selvagens poderão pisá-los.
16 Cruel to her chicks as if they were not hers, little she cares if her labour goes for nothing.	16 É cruel com seus filhotes, como se não fossem seus e não se incomoda de ter sofrido em vão.
17 God, you see, has deprived her of wisdom and given her no share of intel igence.	17 Pois Deus lhe negou sabedoria e não lhe concedeu inteligência.
18 Yet, if she bestirs herself to use her height, she can make fools of horse and rider too.	18 Mas, quando alça voo, ri-se do cavalo e do cavaleiro.
19 Are you the one who makes the horse so brave and covers his neck with flowing mane?	19 És tu que dás vigor ao cavalo e foste tu que enfeitaste seu pescoço com uma crina ondulante?
20 Do you make him leap like a grasshopper? His haughty neighing inspires terror.	20 Que o fazes saltar como um gafanhoto, relinchando terrivelmente?
21 Exultantly he paws the soil of the val ey, and charges the battle-line in all his strength.	21 Orgulhoso de sua força, escava a terra com a pata e atira-se à frente das armas.
22 He laughs at fear; he is afraid of nothing, he recoils before no sword.	22 Ri-se do medo, nada o assusta e não recua diante da espada.
23 On his back the quiver rattles, the flashing spear and javelin.	23 Sobre ele ressoam a aljava, o ferro brilhante da lança e o dardo.
24 Trembling with impatience, he eats up the miles; when the trumpet sounds, there is no holding him.	24 Tremendo de impaciência, devora o espaço e o som da trombeta não o deixa no lugar.
25 At each trumpet blast he neighs exultantly. He scents the battle from afar, the thundering of thecommanders and the war cry.	25 Ao sinal do clarim, diz: ‘Vamos!’. De longe fareja a batalha, a voz troante dos chefes e o alarido dos guerreiros.
26 Is it your wisdom that sets the hawk flying when he spreads his wings to travel south?	26 É graças à tua sabedoria que o falcão alça voo e desdobra as suas asas para o sul?
27 Does the eagle soar at your command to make her eyrie in the heights?	27 É por tua ordem que a águia levanta voo e faz seu ninho nas alturas?
28 She spends her nights among the crags with a needle of rock as her fortress,	28 Ela habita nos rochedos e neles passa a noite, sobre a ponta rochosa e o cimo escarpado.
29 from which she watches for prey, fixing it with her far-ranging eye.	29 De lá espia sua presa, pois seus olhos penetram as distâncias.
30 Even her young drink blood; where anyone has been killed, she is there.	30 Seus filhotes se alimentam de sangue e onde quer que haja cadáveres, ali está ela”.
