1 Do you know when mountain goats give birth? Have you ever watched deer in labour?	1 - Sai forse tu il tempo in cui figliano le stambecche fra le rupi, ovvero hai tu osservato le cerve quando partoriscono?
2 Have you ever counted the months that they carry their young? Do you know when they give birth?	2 Conti tu i mesi di loro gravidanza, e conosci tu il tempo del loro parto?
3 They crouch to drop their young, they get rid of their burdens	3 S'accosciano esse sul feto per partorire, ed emettono gemiti:
4 and the calves, having grown big and strong, go off into the desert and never come back to them.	4 si separano da esse i loro nati e vanno alla pastura, s'allontanano nè ad esse ritornano.
5 Who has given the wild donkey his freedom, who has undone the harness of the brayer?	5 Chi ha mandato libero l'onagro, e i suoi legami chi li ha sciolti?
6 I have given him the wastelands as his home, the salt plain as his habitat.	6 Ad esso io diedi il deserto quale casae qual sua dimora la terra di salsuggine.
7 He scorns the turmoil of the town, obeys no donkey-man's shouts.	7 Disprezza egli il tumulto della città, e urla di mandriano non ascolta;
8 The mountains are the pastures that he ranges in quest of anything green.	8 visita torno torno i monti del suo pascolo, e ogni verde zolla egli ricerca.
9 Is the wild ox willing to serve you or spend a night beside your manger?	9 Vorrà forse servirti il rinoceronte, ovvero starsene alla tua mangiatoia?
10 If you tie a rope round his neck wil he harrow the furrows for you?	10 Legherai tu forse il rinoceronte col tuo giogo all'aratro, ovvero erpicherà esso le zolle delle valli dietro a te?
11 Can you rely on his massive strength and leave him to do your heavy work?	11 Faresti forse assegnamento sulla grande sua forza, e affideresti a lui i tuoi proventi [agricoli]?
12 Can you depend on him to come home and pile your grain on your threshing-floor?	12 Spereresti forse ch'esso [trebbiando] ti renda la tua sementa, radunandola sulla tua aia?
13 Can the wing of the ostrich be compared with the plumage of stork or falcon?	13 La penna dello struzzo è forse simile alle penne della cicogna e dello sparviere?
14 She leaves her eggs on the ground with only earth to warm them;	14 Quando esso abbandona le sue uova in terra, le scaldi forse tu nella polvere?
15 forgetting that a foot may tread on them or a wild animal crush them.	15 Esso si scorda che un piede le può calpestare, e le fiere del campo le schiacciano.
16 Cruel to her chicks as if they were not hers, little she cares if her labour goes for nothing.	16 È crudele verso i suoi figli, come non fossero suoi, sperde le sue fatiche senza che vi sia alcuna minaccia.
17 God, you see, has deprived her of wisdom and given her no share of intel igence.	17 Dio infatti l'ha privato di sapienza, nè gli ha impartito intelligenza;
18 Yet, if she bestirs herself to use her height, she can make fools of horse and rider too.	18 tuttavia, quando è tempo, stende in alto le ali, si burla del cavallo e del suo cavaliere.
19 Are you the one who makes the horse so brave and covers his neck with flowing mane?	19 Dai forse al cavallo vigoria, o nel suo collo immetti tu il nitrito?
20 Do you make him leap like a grasshopper? His haughty neighing inspires terror.	20 Lo fai forse saltare come una cavalletta, nella magnificenza del suo sbuffare terribile?
21 Exultantly he paws the soil of the val ey, and charges the battle-line in all his strength.	21 L'unghia sua scava la terra, ed esulta, con violenza scagliasi incontro agli armati;
22 He laughs at fear; he is afraid of nothing, he recoils before no sword.	22 disprezza esso il timore, non la cede di fronte alla spada.
23 On his back the quiver rattles, the flashing spear and javelin.	23 Addosso a lui tintinna la faretra, vibrano la lancia e lo scudo.
24 Trembling with impatience, he eats up the miles; when the trumpet sounds, there is no holding him.	24 Spumante e fremente divora la terra, nè si tien fermo allo squillar di tromba.
25 At each trumpet blast he neighs exultantly. He scents the battle from afar, the thundering of thecommanders and the war cry.	25 Udendo la tromba esclama: - Ih! Ih! -fiuta da lungi la battagliale grida dei condottieri e il clamor dell'esercito.
26 Is it your wisdom that sets the hawk flying when he spreads his wings to travel south?	26 Forse per tua bravura si veste di piume lo sparviere, ed espande l'ali sue verso il mezzogiorno?
27 Does the eagle soar at your command to make her eyrie in the heights?	27 Forse per tuo comando si leva in alto l'aquila, e in luoghi eccelsi pone il suo nido?
28 She spends her nights among the crags with a needle of rock as her fortress,	28 Sulle rupi essa abita, e dimorasu scoscese rocce e inaccessibili gioghi:
29 from which she watches for prey, fixing it with her far-ranging eye.	29 di là essa scruta la preda, da lungi i suoi occhi esplorano.
30 Even her young drink blood; where anyone has been killed, she is there.	30 I suoi piccoli lambiscono sangue, e ovunque sia un cadavere, subito essa ritrovasi.»
	31 E soggiungendo il Signore, disse a Giobbe:
	32 «Chi vuol contendere con Dio, s'acquieta forse così facilmente? eppur chi fa riprensioni a Dio, gli deve rispondere.»
	33 Rispose allora Giobbe al Signore e disse:
	34 «Ho parlato con leggerezza; che cosa potrei io rispondere? la mia mano sulla mia bocca io pongo.
	35 Ho parlato una prima volta, e vorrei non aver parlato: e poi una seconda, ma non replicherò più.»
