NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Do you know when mountain goats give birth? Have you ever watched deer in labour?	1 ¿Sabes tú cómo dan a luz las cabras monteses? ¿Observas el parto de las ciervas?
2 Have you ever counted the months that they carry their young? Do you know when they give birth?	2 ¿Cuentas los meses de su gravidez y conoces el tiempo de su alumbramiento?
3 They crouch to drop their young, they get rid of their burdens	3 Ellas se agachan, echan sus crías y depositan sus camadas.
4 and the calves, having grown big and strong, go off into the desert and never come back to them.	4 Sus crías se hacen robustas y crecen, se van al campo y no vuelven más.
5 Who has given the wild donkey his freedom, who has undone the harness of the brayer?	5 ¿Quién dejó en libertad el asno salvaje y soltó las ataduras del onagro?
6 I have given him the wastelands as his home, the salt plain as his habitat.	6 Yo le di la estepa como casa y como morada, la tierra salitrosa.
7 He scorns the turmoil of the town, obeys no donkey-man's shouts.	7 El se ríe del tumulto de la ciudad, no oye vociferar al arriero.
8 The mountains are the pastures that he ranges in quest of anything green.	8 Explora las montañas en busca de pasto, va detrás de cada brizna verde.
9 Is the wild ox willing to serve you or spend a night beside your manger?	9 ¿Aceptará servirte el toro salvaje y pasará la noche junto a tu establo?
10 If you tie a rope round his neck wil he harrow the furrows for you?	10 ¿Lo mantendrás sobre el surco con una rienda y trillará los valles detrás de ti?
11 Can you rely on his massive strength and leave him to do your heavy work?	11 ¿Contarías con él porque tiene mucha fuerza o podrías encomendarle tus trabajos?
12 Can you depend on him to come home and pile your grain on your threshing-floor?	12 ¿Confías acaso que él volverá para reunir los granos en tu era?
13 Can the wing of the ostrich be compared with the plumage of stork or falcon?	13 El avestruz bate sus alas alegremente, pero no tiene el plumaje de la cigüeña.
14 She leaves her eggs on the ground with only earth to warm them;	14 Cuando abandona sus huevos en la tierra y deja que se calienten sobre el polvo,
15 forgetting that a foot may tread on them or a wild animal crush them.	15 olvida que un pie los puede pisar y que una fiera puede aplastarlos.
16 Cruel to her chicks as if they were not hers, little she cares if her labour goes for nothing.	16 Es cruel con sus crías, como si no fueran suyas, y no teme que sea vana su labor,
17 God, you see, has deprived her of wisdom and given her no share of intel igence.	17 porque Dios le negó la sabiduría y no le concedió la inteligencia.
18 Yet, if she bestirs herself to use her height, she can make fools of horse and rider too.	18 Pero apenas se levanta y toma impulso, se ríe de caballo y de su jinete.
19 Are you the one who makes the horse so brave and covers his neck with flowing mane?	19 ¿Le das tú la fuerza al caballo y revistes su cuello de crines?
20 Do you make him leap like a grasshopper? His haughty neighing inspires terror.	20 ¿Lo haces saltar como una langosta? ¡Es terrible su relincho altanero!
21 Exultantly he paws the soil of the val ey, and charges the battle-line in all his strength.	21 El piafa de contento en la llanura, se lanza con brío al encuentro de las armas:
22 He laughs at fear; he is afraid of nothing, he recoils before no sword.	22 se ríe del miedo y no se asusta de nada, no retrocede delante de la espada.
23 On his back the quiver rattles, the flashing spear and javelin.	23 Por encima de él resuena la aljaba, la lanza fulgurante y la jabalina.
24 Trembling with impatience, he eats up the miles; when the trumpet sounds, there is no holding him.	24 Rugiendo de impaciencia, devora la distancia, no se contiene cuando suena la trompeta.
25 At each trumpet blast he neighs exultantly. He scents the battle from afar, the thundering of thecommanders and the war cry.	25 Relincha a cada toque de trompeta, desde lejos olfatea la batalla, las voces de mando y los gritos de guerra.
26 Is it your wisdom that sets the hawk flying when he spreads his wings to travel south?	26 ¿Es por tu inteligencia que se cubre de plumas el halcón y despliega sus alas hacia el sur?
27 Does the eagle soar at your command to make her eyrie in the heights?	27 ¿Por una orden tuya levanta vuelo el águila y pone su nido en las alturas?
28 She spends her nights among the crags with a needle of rock as her fortress,	28 La roca es su morada de día y de noche, la peña escarpada es su fortaleza
29 from which she watches for prey, fixing it with her far-ranging eye.	29 Desde allí está al acecho de su presa y sus ojos miran a lo lejos.
30 Even her young drink blood; where anyone has been killed, she is there.	30 Sus pichones se hartan de sangre; donde hay cadáveres, allí está ella.
