1 Do you know when mountain goats give birth? Have you ever watched deer in labour?	1 Sai tu quando figliano i camosci o assisti alle doglie delle cerve?
2 Have you ever counted the months that they carry their young? Do you know when they give birth?	2 Conti tu i mesi della loro gravidanza e sai tu quando devono partorire?
3 They crouch to drop their young, they get rid of their burdens	3 Si curvano e si sgravano dei loro parti, espellono i loro feti.
4 and the calves, having grown big and strong, go off into the desert and never come back to them.	4 Robusti sono i loro figli, crescono all’aperto, se ne vanno e non tornano più da esse.
5 Who has given the wild donkey his freedom, who has undone the harness of the brayer?	5 Chi lascia libero l’asino selvatico e chi ne scioglie i legami?
6 I have given him the wastelands as his home, the salt plain as his habitat.	6 Io gli ho dato come casa il deserto e per dimora la terra salmastra.
7 He scorns the turmoil of the town, obeys no donkey-man's shouts.	7 Dei rumori della città se ne ride e non ode le urla dei guardiani.
8 The mountains are the pastures that he ranges in quest of anything green.	8 Gira per le montagne, sua pastura, e va in cerca di quanto è verde.
9 Is the wild ox willing to serve you or spend a night beside your manger?	9 Forse il bufalo acconsente a servirti o a passare la notte presso la tua greppia?
10 If you tie a rope round his neck wil he harrow the furrows for you?	10 Puoi forse legare il bufalo al solco con le corde, o fargli arare le valli dietro a te?
11 Can you rely on his massive strength and leave him to do your heavy work?	11 Ti puoi fidare di lui, perché la sua forza è grande, e puoi scaricare su di lui le tue fatiche?
12 Can you depend on him to come home and pile your grain on your threshing-floor?	12 Conteresti su di lui, perché torni e raduni la tua messe sull’aia?
13 Can the wing of the ostrich be compared with the plumage of stork or falcon?	13 Lo struzzo batte festosamente le ali, come se fossero penne di cicogna e di falco.
14 She leaves her eggs on the ground with only earth to warm them;	14 Depone infatti sulla terra le uova e nella sabbia le lascia riscaldare.
15 forgetting that a foot may tread on them or a wild animal crush them.	15 Non pensa che un piede può schiacciarle, una bestia selvatica calpestarle.
16 Cruel to her chicks as if they were not hers, little she cares if her labour goes for nothing.	16 Tratta duramente i figli, come se non fossero suoi, della sua inutile fatica non si preoccupa,
17 God, you see, has deprived her of wisdom and given her no share of intel igence.	17 perché Dio gli ha negato la saggezza e non gli ha dato in sorte l’intelligenza.
18 Yet, if she bestirs herself to use her height, she can make fools of horse and rider too.	18 Ma quando balza in alto, si beffa del cavallo e del suo cavaliere.
19 Are you the one who makes the horse so brave and covers his neck with flowing mane?	19 Puoi dare la forza al cavallo e rivestire di criniera il suo collo?
20 Do you make him leap like a grasshopper? His haughty neighing inspires terror.	20 Puoi farlo saltare come una cavalletta, con il suo nitrito maestoso e terrificante?
21 Exultantly he paws the soil of the val ey, and charges the battle-line in all his strength.	21 Scalpita nella valle baldanzoso e con impeto va incontro alle armi.
22 He laughs at fear; he is afraid of nothing, he recoils before no sword.	22 Sprezza la paura, non teme, né retrocede davanti alla spada.
23 On his back the quiver rattles, the flashing spear and javelin.	23 Su di lui tintinna la faretra, luccica la lancia e il giavellotto.
24 Trembling with impatience, he eats up the miles; when the trumpet sounds, there is no holding him.	24 Con eccitazione e furore divora lo spazio e al suono del corno più non si tiene.
25 At each trumpet blast he neighs exultantly. He scents the battle from afar, the thundering of thecommanders and the war cry.	25 Al primo suono nitrisce: “Ah!” e da lontano fiuta la battaglia, gli urli dei capi e il grido di guerra.
26 Is it your wisdom that sets the hawk flying when he spreads his wings to travel south?	26 È forse per il tuo ingegno che spicca il volo lo sparviero e distende le ali verso il meridione?
27 Does the eagle soar at your command to make her eyrie in the heights?	27 O al tuo comando l’aquila s’innalza e costruisce il suo nido sulle alture?
28 She spends her nights among the crags with a needle of rock as her fortress,	28 Vive e passa la notte fra le rocce, sugli spuntoni delle rocce o sui picchi.
29 from which she watches for prey, fixing it with her far-ranging eye.	29 Di lassù spia la preda e da lontano la scorgono i suoi occhi.
30 Even her young drink blood; where anyone has been killed, she is there.	30 I suoi piccoli succhiano il sangue e dove sono cadaveri, là essa si trova».
