NEW JERUSALEMLXX
Do you know when mountain goats give birth? Have you ever watched deer in labour?1 ει εγνως καιρον τοκετου τραγελαφων πετρας εφυλαξας δε ωδινας ελαφων
Have you ever counted the months that they carry their young? Do you know when they give birth?2 ηριθμησας δε αυτων μηνας πληρεις τοκετου ωδινας δε αυτων ελυσας
They crouch to drop their young, they get rid of their burdens3 εξεθρεψας δε αυτων τα παιδια εξω φοβου ωδινας αυτων εξαποστελεις
and the calves, having grown big and strong, go off into the desert and never come back to them.4 απορρηξουσιν τα τεκνα αυτων πληθυνθησονται εν γενηματι εξελευσονται και ου μη ανακαμψουσιν αυτοις
Who has given the wild donkey his freedom, who has undone the harness of the brayer?5 τις δε εστιν ο αφεις ονον αγριον ελευθερον δεσμους δε αυτου τις ελυσεν
I have given him the wastelands as his home, the salt plain as his habitat.6 εθεμην δε την διαιταν αυτου ερημον και τα σκηνωματα αυτου αλμυριδα
He scorns the turmoil of the town, obeys no donkey-man's shouts.7 καταγελων πολυοχλιας πολεως μεμψιν δε φορολογου ουκ ακουων
The mountains are the pastures that he ranges in quest of anything green.8 κατασκεψεται ορη νομην αυτου και οπισω παντος χλωρου ζητει
Is the wild ox willing to serve you or spend a night beside your manger?9 βουλησεται δε σοι μονοκερως δουλευσαι η κοιμηθηναι επι φατνης σου
If you tie a rope round his neck wil he harrow the furrows for you?10 δησεις δε εν ιμασι ζυγον αυτου η ελκυσει σου αυλακας εν πεδιω
Can you rely on his massive strength and leave him to do your heavy work?11 πεποιθας δε επ' αυτω οτι πολλη η ισχυς αυτου επαφησεις δε αυτω τα εργα σου
Can you depend on him to come home and pile your grain on your threshing-floor?12 πιστευσεις δε οτι αποδωσει σοι τον σπορον εισοισει δε σου τον αλωνα
Can the wing of the ostrich be compared with the plumage of stork or falcon?13 πτερυξ τερπομενων νεελασα εαν συλλαβη ασιδα και νεσσα
She leaves her eggs on the ground with only earth to warm them;14 οτι αφησει εις γην τα ωα αυτης και επι χουν θαλψει
forgetting that a foot may tread on them or a wild animal crush them.15 και επελαθετο οτι πους σκορπιει και θηρια αγρου καταπατησει
Cruel to her chicks as if they were not hers, little she cares if her labour goes for nothing.16 απεσκληρυνεν τα τεκνα αυτης ωστε μη εαυτη εις κενον εκοπιασεν ανευ φοβου
God, you see, has deprived her of wisdom and given her no share of intel igence.17 οτι κατεσιωπησεν αυτη ο θεος σοφιαν και ουκ εμερισεν αυτη εν τη συνεσει
Yet, if she bestirs herself to use her height, she can make fools of horse and rider too.18 κατα καιρον εν υψει υψωσει καταγελασεται ιππου και του επιβατου αυτου
Are you the one who makes the horse so brave and covers his neck with flowing mane?19 η συ περιεθηκας ιππω δυναμιν ενεδυσας δε τραχηλω αυτου φοβον
Do you make him leap like a grasshopper? His haughty neighing inspires terror.20 περιεθηκας δε αυτω πανοπλιαν δοξαν δε στηθεων αυτου τολμη
Exultantly he paws the soil of the val ey, and charges the battle-line in all his strength.21 ανορυσσων εν πεδιω γαυρια εκπορευεται δε εις πεδιον εν ισχυι
He laughs at fear; he is afraid of nothing, he recoils before no sword.22 συναντων βελει καταγελα και ου μη αποστραφη απο σιδηρου
On his back the quiver rattles, the flashing spear and javelin.23 επ' αυτω γαυρια τοξον και μαχαιρα
Trembling with impatience, he eats up the miles; when the trumpet sounds, there is no holding him.24 και οργη αφανιει την γην και ου μη πιστευση εως αν σημανη σαλπιγξ
At each trumpet blast he neighs exultantly. He scents the battle from afar, the thundering of thecommanders and the war cry.25 σαλπιγγος δε σημαινουσης λεγει ευγε πορρωθεν δε οσφραινεται πολεμου συν αλματι και κραυγη
Is it your wisdom that sets the hawk flying when he spreads his wings to travel south?26 εκ δε της σης επιστημης εστηκεν ιεραξ αναπετασας τας πτερυγας ακινητος καθορων τα προς νοτον
Does the eagle soar at your command to make her eyrie in the heights?27 επι δε σω προσταγματι υψουται αετος γυψ δε επι νοσσιας αυτου καθεσθεις αυλιζεται
She spends her nights among the crags with a needle of rock as her fortress,28 επ' εξοχη πετρας και αποκρυφω
from which she watches for prey, fixing it with her far-ranging eye.29 εκεισε ων ζητει τα σιτα πορρωθεν οι οφθαλμοι αυτου σκοπευουσιν
Even her young drink blood; where anyone has been killed, she is there.30 νεοσσοι δε αυτου φυρονται εν αιματι ου δ' αν ωσι τεθνεωτες παραχρημα ευρισκονται
