Livro dos Provérbios 22

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Bom renome vale mais que grandes riquezas; a boa reputação vale mais que a prata e o ouro.	1 Fame is preferable to great wealth, favour, to silver and gold.
2 Rico e pobre se encontram: foi o Senhor que criou a ambos.	2 Rich and poor rub shoulders, Yahweh has made them both.
3 O homem prudente percebe a aproximação do mal e se abriga, mas os imprudentes passam adiante e recebem o dano.	3 The discreet sees danger and takes shelter, simpletons go ahead and pay the penalty.
4 O prêmio da humildade é o temor do Senhor, a riqueza, a honra e a vida.	4 The reward of humility is the fear of Yahweh, and riches, honour and life.
5 Espinhos e laços há no caminho do perverso; quem guarda sua vida retira-se para longe deles.	5 Thorns and snares line the path of the wilful, whoever values life will stay at a distance.
6 Ensina à criança o caminho que ela deve seguir; mesmo quando envelhecer, dele não se há de afastar.	6 Give a lad a training suitable to his character and, even when old, he wil not go back on it.
7 O rico domina os pobres: o que toma emprestado torna-se escravo daquele que lhe emprestou.	7 The rich lords it over the poor, the borrower is the lender's slave.
8 Aquele que semeia o mal, recolhe o tormento: a vara de sua ira o ferirá.	8 Whoever sows injustice reaps disaster, and the rod of such anger wil disappear.
9 O homem benevolente será abençoado porque tira do seu pão para o pobre.	9 A kindly eye wil earn a blessing, such a person shares out food with the poor.
10 Expulsa o mofador e cessará a discórdia: ultrajes e litígios cessarão.	10 Expel the mocker and strife goes too, law-suits and dislike die down.
11 Quem ama a pureza do coração, pela graça dos seus lábios, é amigo do rei.	11 Whoever loves the pure of heart and is gracious of speech has the king for a friend.
12 Os olhos do Senhor protegem a sabedoria, mas arruínam as palavras do pérfido.	12 Yahweh's eyes protect knowledge, but he confounds deceitful speeches.
13 Há um leão do lado de fora!, diz o preguiçoso, eu poderei ser morto na rua!	13 'There is a lion outside,' says the idler, 'I shal be kil ed in the street!'
14 A boca das meretrizes é uma cova profunda; nela cairá aquele contra o qual o Senhor se irar.	14 The mouth of an adulterous woman is a deep pit, into it fal s the man whom Yahweh rebukes.
15 A loucura apega-se ao coração da criança; a vara da disciplina afastá-la-á dela.	15 Fol y is anchored in the heart of a youth, the whip of instruction wil rid him of it.
16 Quem oprime o pobre, enriquece-o. Quem dá ao rico, empobrece-o.	16 Harsh treatment enriches the poor, but a gift impoverishes the rich.
17 Presta atenção às minhas palavras, aplica teu coração à minha doutrina,	17 Give ear, listen to the sayings of the sages, and apply your heart to what I know,
18 porque é agradável que as guardes dentro de teu coração e que elas permaneçam, todas, presentes em teus lábios.	18 for it wil be a delight to keep them deep within you to have them al ready on your lips.
19 É para que o Senhor seja tua confiança, que quero instruir-te hoje.	19 So that your trust may be in Yahweh, it is you whom I wish to instruct today.
20 Desde muito tempo eu te escrevi conselhos e instruções,	20 Have I not written for you thirty chapters of advice and knowledge,
21 para te ensinar a verdade das coisas certas, para que respondas certo àquele que te indaga.	21 to make you know the certainty of true sayings, so that you can return with sound answers to thosewho sent you?
22 Não despojes o pobre, porque é pobre, não oprimas o fraco à porta da cidade,	22 Do not despoil the weak, for he is weak, and do not oppress the poor at the gate,
23 porque o Senhor pleiteará sua causa e tirará a vida aos que os despojaram.	23 for Yahweh takes up their cause, and extorts the life of their extortioners.
24 Não faças amizade com um homem colérico, não andes com o violento,	24 Do not make friends with one who gives way to anger, make no one quick-tempered a companion ofyours,
25 há o perigo de que aprendas os seus costumes e prepares um laço fatal.	25 for fear you learn such behaviour and in it find a snare for yourself.
26 Não sejas daqueles que se obrigam, apertando a mão, e se fazem fiadores de dívidas;	26 Do not be one of those who go guarantor, who go surety for debts:
27 se não tens com que pagar, arrebatar-te-ão teu leito debaixo de ti.	27 if you have no means of paying your bed wil be taken from under you.
28 Não passes além dos marcos antigos que puseram teus pais.	28 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone set by your ancestors.
29 Viste um homem hábil em sua obra? Ele entrará ao serviço dos reis, e não ficará entre gente obscura.	29 You see someone alert at his business? His aim wil be to serve kings; not for him the service of theobscure.
