SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Aleluia. Louvai o Senhor porque ele é bom, porque a sua misericórdia é eterna.	1 Al eluia! Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, his faithful love is everlasting!
2 Quem contará os poderosos feitos do Senhor? Quem poderá apregoar os seus louvores?	2 Who can recount al Yahweh's triumphs, who can ful y voice his praise?
3 Felizes aqueles que observam os preceitos, aqueles que, em todo o tempo, fazem o que é reto.	3 How blessed are those who keep to what is just, whose conduct is always upright!
4 Lembrai-vos de mim, Senhor, pela benevolência que tendes com o vosso povo. Assisti-me com o vosso socorro,	4 Remember me, Yahweh, in your love for your people. Come near to me with your saving power,
5 para que eu prove a felicidade de vossos eleitos, compartilhe do júbilo de vosso povo e me glorie com os que constituem vossa herança.	5 let me share the happiness of your chosen ones, let me share the joy of your people, the pride ofyour heritage.
6 Como nossos pais, nós também pecamos, cometemos a iniqüidade, praticamos o mal.	6 Like our ancestors, we have sinned, we have acted wickedly, guiltily;
7 Nossos pais, no Egito, não prezaram os vossos milagres, esqueceram a multidão de vossos benefícios e se revoltaram contra o Altíssimo no mar Vermelho.	7 our ancestors in Egypt never grasped the meaning of your wonders. They did not bear in mind yourcountless acts of love, at the Sea of Reeds they defied the Most High;
8 Mas ele os poupou para a honra de seu nome, para tornar patente o seu poder.	8 but for the sake of his name he saved them, to make known his mighty power.
9 Ameaçou o mar e ele se tornou seco, e os conduziu por entre as ondas como através de um deserto.	9 At his rebuke the Sea of Reeds dried up, he let them pass through the deep as though it were desert,
10 Livrou-os das mãos daquele que os odiava, e os salvou do poder inimigo.	10 so he saved them from their opponents' clutches, rescued them from the clutches of their enemies.
11 As águas recobriram seus adversários, nenhum deles escapou.	11 The waters enveloped their enemies, not one of whom was left.
12 Então acreditaram em sua palavra, e cantaram os seus louvores.	12 Then they believed what he had said, and sang his praises.
13 Depressa, porém, esqueceram suas obras, e não confiaram em seus desígnios.	13 But they soon forgot his achievements, they did not even wait for his plans;
14 Entregaram-se à concupiscência no deserto, e tentaram a Deus na solidão.	14 they were overwhelmed with greed in the wastelands, in the solitary wastes they challenged God.
15 Ele lhes concedeu o que pediam, mas os feriu de um mal mortal.	15 He gave them al they asked for, but struck them with a deep wasting sickness;
16 Em seus acampamentos invejaram Moisés e Aarão, o eleito do Senhor.	16 in the camp they grew jealous of Moses, and of Aaron, Yahweh's holy one.
17 Abriu-se a terra e tragou Datã, e sepultou os sequazes de Abiron.	17 The earth opened and swal owed up Dathan, closed in on Abiram's faction;
18 Um fogo devassou as suas tropas e as chamas consumiram os ímpios.	18 fire flamed out against their faction, the renegades were engulfed in flames.
19 Fabricaram um bezerro de ouro no sopé do Horeb, e adoraram um ídolo de ouro fundido.	19 At Horeb they made a calf, bowed low before cast metal;
20 Eles trocaram a sua glória pela estátua de um touro que come feno.	20 they exchanged their glory for the image of a grass-eating bull.
21 Esqueceram a Deus que os salvara, que obrara prodígios no Egito,	21 They forgot the God who was saving them, who had done great deeds in Egypt,
22 maravilhas na terra de Cam, estupendos feitos no mar Vermelho.	22 such wonders in the land of Ham, such awesome deeds at the Sea of Reeds.
23 Já cogitava em exterminá-los se Moisés, seu eleito, não intercedesse junto dele para impedir que sua cólera os destruísse.	23 He thought of putting an end to them, had not Moses, his chosen one, taken a stand in the breachand confronted him, to turn his anger away from destroying them.
24 Depois, eles desprezaram uma terra de delícias, desconfiados de sua palavra.	24 They counted a desirable land for nothing, they put no trust in his promise;
25 Em suas tendas se puseram a murmurar, e desobedeceram ao Senhor.	25 they stayed in their tents and grumbled, they would not listen to Yahweh's voice.
26 Então, com a mão alçada, ele jurou que havia de prostrá-los no deserto	26 So he lifted his hand against them, to strike them down in the desert,
27 e dispersar sua descendência entre as nações pagãs, disseminando-os por toda a terra.	27 to strike down their descendants among the nations, to scatter them al over the world.
28 Aderiram também ao Baal de Fegor, comeram vítimas oferecidas a deuses sem vida.	28 They committed themselves to serve Baal-Peor, and ate sacrifices made to lifeless gods.
29 E, provocando-o com seus crimes, uma peste irrompeu entre eles.	29 They so provoked him by their actions that a plague broke out among them.
30 Mas levantou-se Finéias para fazer justiça; cessou a peste.	30 Then up stood Phinehas to intervene, and the plague was checked;
31 Seu zelo lhe foi imputado como mérito, de geração em geração, para sempre.	31 for this he is the example of uprightness, from age to age for ever.
32 Em seguida, irritaram a Deus nas águas de Meribá, e adveio o mal a Moisés por causa deles.	32 At the waters of Meribah they so angered Yahweh, that Moses suffered on their account,
33 Porque o provocaram tanto, palavras temerárias saíram-lhe dos lábios.	33 for they had embittered his spirit, and he spoke without due thought.
34 Não exterminaram os povos, como o Senhor lhes havia ordenado,	34 They did not destroy the nations, as Yahweh had told them to do,
35 mas se misturaram com as nações pagãs e aprenderam seus costumes.	35 but intermarried with them, and adopted their ways.
36 Prestaram culto aos seus ídolos, que se tornaram um laço para eles.	36 They worshipped those nations' false gods, til they found themselves entrapped,
37 Imolaram os seus filhos e suas filhas aos demônios.	37 and sacrificed their own sons and their daughters to demons.
38 Derramaram o sangue inocente: o sangue de seus filhos e de suas filhas, que aos ídolos de Canaã sacrificaram; seu país ficou manchado com esse sangue.	38 Innocent blood they shed, the blood of their sons and daughters; offering them to the idols ofCanaan, they pol uted the country with blood.
39 Eles se contaminaram com homicídios, e se prostituíram com seus crimes.	39 They defiled themselves by such actions, their behaviour was that of a harlot.
40 Então se inflamou contra seu povo a cólera divina, e Deus teve aversão de sua herança.	40 Yahweh's anger blazed out at his people, his own heritage fil ed him with disgust.
41 Ele os entregou nas mãos das nações pagãs, e foram dominados pelos que os odiavam.	41 He handed them over to the nations, and their opponents became their masters;
42 Oprimiram-nos os seus inimigos, foram submetidos ao seu jugo.	42 their enemies lorded it over them, crushing them under their rule.
43 Muitas vezes ele os libertou; mas sua conduta o exasperou, de tal modo que foram abatidos por causa de suas iniqüidades.	43 Time and again he rescued them, but they stil defied him deliberately, and sank ever deeper in theirguilt;
44 Entretanto, vendo a sua aflição, ouviu-lhes as orações.	44 even so he took pity on their distress, as soon as he heard them cry out.
45 Em favor deles lembrou-se de sua aliança, e por sua misericórdia deles se apiedou.	45 Bearing his covenant with them in mind, he relented in his boundless and faithful love;
46 E fez com que encontrassem a clemência junto aos que os tinham aprisionado.	46 he ensured that they received compassion, in their treatment by al their captors.
47 Salvai-nos, Senhor, nosso Deus, e recolhei-nos de entre as nações, para que possamos celebrar o vosso santo nome e ter a satisfação de vos louvar.	47 Save us, Yahweh our God, gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holyname, and may glory in praising you.
48 Bendito seja o Senhor, Deus de Israel, pelos séculos dos séculos! E que todo o povo diga: Amém!	48 Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, from all eternity and for ever! Let all the people say, 'Amen'.
