Livro de Jó 31

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Eu havia feito um pacto com meus olhos: não desejaria olhar nunca para uma virgem.	1 I had made an agreement with my eyes not to linger on any virgin.
2 Que parte me daria Deus lá do alto, que sorte o Todo-poderoso me enviaria dos céus?	2 Now what portion does God al ot from above, what fate does Shaddai apportion from his heaven-
3 A infelicidade não está reservada ao injusto, e o infortúnio ao iníquo?	3 if not the disasters appropriate to the wicked and the calamities fit for evil-doers?
4 Não conhece Deus os meus caminhos, e não conta todos os meus passos?	4 But surely he sees how I behave, does he not count all my steps?
5 Se caminhei com a mentira, se meu pé correu atrás da fraude,	5 Have I been a fel ow-travel er with falsehood, or hastened my steps towards deceit?
6 que Deus me pese em justas balanças e reconhecerá minha integridade.	6 Let him weigh me on accurate scales: then he, God, will recognise my integrity!
7 Se meus passos se desviaram do caminho, se meu coração seguiu meus olhos, se às minhas mãos se apegou qualquer mácula,	7 If my feet have wandered from the rightful path, or if my eyes have led my heart astray, or if my handsare smirched with any stain,
8 semeie eu e outro o coma, e que minhas plantações sejam desenraizadas!	8 let someone else eat what I have sown and let my young shoots all be rooted out.
9 Se meu coração foi seduzido por uma mulher, se fiquei à espreita à porta de meu vizinho,	9 If my heart has been seduced by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbour's door,
10 que minha mulher gire a mó para outro e que estranhos a possuam!	10 let my wife go and grind for someone else, let others have intercourse with her!
11 Pois isso teria sido um crime, um delito dependente da justiça,	11 For I would have committed a sin of lust, a crime punishable by the law,
12 um fogo que devoraria até o abismo, e que teria arruinado todos os meus bens.	12 a fire, indeed, burning al to Perdition, which would have devoured my whole revenue.
13 Nunca violei o direito de meus escravos, ou de minha serva, em suas discussões comigo.	13 If I have ever infringed the rights of slave or slave-girl in legal actions against me-
14 Que farei eu quando Deus se levantar? Quando me interrogar, que lhe responderei?	14 what shal I do, when God stands up? What shal I say, when he holds his assize?
15 Aquele que me criou no ventre, não o criou também a ele? Um mesmo criador não nos formou no seio da nossa mãe?	15 Did he not create them in the womb like me, the same God forming us in the womb?
16 Não recusei aos pobres aquilo que desejavam, não fiz desfalecer os olhos da viúva,	16 Have I been insensible to the needs of the poor, or let a widow's eyes grow dim?
17 não comi sozinho meu pedaço de pão, sem que o órfão tivesse a sua parte;	17 Have I eaten my bit of bread on my own without sharing it with the orphan?
18 desde minha infância cuidei deste como um pai, desde o ventre de minha mãe fui o guia da viúva.	18 I, whom God has fostered father-like from childhood, and guided since I left my mother's womb,
19 Se vi perecer um homem por falta de roupas, e o pobre que não tinha com que cobrir-se,	19 have I ever seen a wretch in need of clothing, or the poor with nothing to wear,
20 sem que seus rins me tenham abençoado, aquecido como estava com a lã de minhas ovelhas;	20 without his having cause to bless me from his heart, as he felt the warmth of the fleece from mylambs?
21 se levantei a mão contra o órfão, quando me via apoiado pelos juízes,	21 Have I raised my hand against an orphan, presuming on my credit at the gate?
22 que meu ombro caia de minhas costas, que meu braço seja arrancado de seu cotovelo!	22 If so, let my shoulder fal from its socket, let my arm break off at the elbow!
23 Pois o temor de Deus me invadiu, e diante de sua majestade não posso subsistir.	23 For the terror of God would fal on me and I could not then stand my ground before his majesty.
24 Nunca pus no ouro minha segurança, nem jamais disse ao ouro puro: És minha esperança.	24 Have I put my faith in gold, saying to fine gold, 'Ah, my security'?
25 Nunca me rejubilei por ser grande a minha riqueza, nem pelo fato de minha mão ter ajuntado muito.	25 Have I ever gloated over my great wealth, or the riches that my hands have won?
26 Quando eu via o sol brilhar, e a lua levantar-se em seu esplendor,	26 Or has the sight of the sun in its glory, or the glow of the moon as it walked the sky,
27 jamais meu coração deixou-se seduzir em segredo, e minha mão não foi levada à boca para um beijo.	27 secretly stolen my heart, so that I blew them a kiss?
28 Isto seria um crime digno de castigo, pois eu teria renegado o Deus do alto.	28 That too would be a criminal offence, to have denied the supreme God.
29 Nunca me alegrei com a ruína de meu inimigo, e nem exultei quando a infelicidade o feriu.	29 Have I rejoiced at my enemy's misfortune, or exulted when disaster overtook him? -
30 Não permiti que minha língua pecasse, reclamando sua morte por uma imprecação.	30 I, who would not allow my tongue to sin or to lay his life under a curse.
31 Jamais as pessoas de minha tenda me disseram: Há alguém que não saiu satisfeito.	31 The people of my tent, did they not say, 'Will anyone name a person whom he has not fil ed withmeat?'
32 O estrangeiro não passava a noite fora, eu abria a minha porta ao viajante.	32 No stranger ever had to sleep outside, my door was always open to the traveller.
33 Nunca dissimulei minha culpa aos homens, escondendo em meu peito minha iniqüidade,	33 Have I ever concealed my transgression from others or kept my fault a secret in my breast?
34 como se temesse a multidão e receasse o desprezo das famílias, a ponto de me manter quieto sem pôr o pé fora da porta.	34 Have I ever stood in fear of common gossip, or dreaded any family's contempt, and so kept quiet, notventuring out of doors?
35 Oh, se eu tivesse alguém para me ouvir! Eis a minha assinatura: que o Todo-poderoso me responda! Que o meu adversário escreva também um memorial.	35 Will no one give me a hearing? I have said my last word; now let Shaddai reply! When my adversaryhas drafted his writ against me
36 Será que eu não o poria sobre meus ombros, e não cingiria minha fronte com ele como de uma coroa?	36 I shall wear it on my shoulder, and bind it round my head like a royal turban.
37 Dar-lhe-ia conta de todos os meus passos, e me apresentaria diante dele altivo como um príncipe.	37 I shall give him an account of my every step and go as boldly as a prince to meet him.End of thewords of Job.
38 Se minha terra clamou contra mim, e seus sulcos derramaram lágrimas,	38 If my land cries for vengeance against me and its furrows weep in concert,
39 se comi seus frutos sem pagar, se afligi a alma de seu possuidor,	39 if I have eaten its produce without paying, and caused the death of its owners,
40 que em vez de trigo produza espinhos, e joio em vez de cevada! Aqui terminam os discursos de Jó.	40 let brambles grow instead of wheat, rank weeds instead of barley!
