1 Morabatur autem Israel in Settim, et incepit populus fornicari cum filiabus Moab,	1 And Israel at that time abode in Settim, and the people committed fornication with the daughters of Moab,
2 quae vocaverunt populum ad sacrificia deorum suorum. Et illi comederunt et adoraverunt deos earum;	2 Who called them to their sacrifices. And they ate of them, and adored their gods.
3 et adhaesit Israel Baalphegor. Et iratus Dominus	3 And Israel was initiated to Beelphegor: upon which the Lord being angry,
4 ait ad Moysen: “ Tolle cunctos principes populi et suspende eos coram Domino contra solem in patibulis, ut avertatur furor meus ab Israel ”.	4 Said to Moses: Take all the princes of the people, and hang them up on gibbets against the sun: that my fury may be turned away from Israel.
5 Dixitque Moyses ad iudices Israel: “ Occidat unusquisque proximos suos, qui adhaeserunt Baalphegor ”.	5 And Moses said to the judges of Israel: Let every man kill his neighbours, that have been initiated to Beelphegor.
6 Et ecce unus de filiis Israel intravit coram fratribus suis ad Madianitin, vidente Moyse et omni turba filiorum Israel, qui flebant ante fores tabernaculi conventus.	6 And behold one of the children of Israel went in before his brethren to a harlot of Madian, in the sight of Moses, and of all the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle.
7 Quod cum vidisset Phinees filius Eleazari filii Aaron sacerdotis, surrexit de medio congregationis et, arrepta lancea,	7 And when Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest saw it, he rose up from the midst; of the multitude, and taking a dagger,
8 ingressus est post virum Israelitem in cubiculum et perfodit ambos simul, virum scilicet et mulierem, in locis genitalibus; cessavitque plaga a filiis Israel.	8 Went in after the Israelite into the brothel house, and thrust both of them through together, to wit, the man and the woman in the genital parts. And the scourge ceased from the children of Israel:
9 Et occisi sunt viginti quattuor milia hominum.	9 And there were slain four and twenty thousand men.
10 Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen:	10 And the Lord said to Moses:
11 “ Phinees filius Eleazari filii Aaron sacerdotis avertit iram meam a filiis Israel, quia zelo meo commotus est in medio eorum, ut non ipse delerem filios Israel in zelo meo.	11 Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned away my wrath from the children of Israel: because he was moved with my zeal against them, that I myself might not destroy the children of Israel in my zeal.
12 Idcirco loquere ad eum: Ecce do ei pacem foederis mei,	12 Therefore say to him: Behold I give him the peace of my covenant,
13 et erit tam ipsi quam semini eius pactum sacerdotii sempiternum, quia zelatus est pro Deo suo et expiavit scelus filiorum Israel ”.	13 And the covenant of the priesthood for ever shall be both to him and his seed, because he hath been zealous for his God, and hath made atonement for the wickedness of the children of Israel.
14 Erat autem nomen viri Israelitae, qui occisus est cum Madianitide, Zamri filius Salu dux de cognatione et tribu Simeonis;	14 And the name of the Israelite, was slain with the woman of Madian, was Zambri the son of Salu, a prince the kindred and tribe of Simeon.
15 porro mulier Madianitis, quae pariter interfecta est, vocabatur Cozbi filia Sur principis tribus in Madian.	15 And the Madianite woman, that was slain with him, was called Cozbi the daughter of Sur, a most noble prince among the Madianites.
16 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen dicens:	16 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
17 “ Pugnate contra Madianitas et percutite eos,	17 Let the Madianites find you enemies, and slay you them:
18 quia ipsi hostiliter egerunt contra vos et decepere insidiis per idolum Phegor et in negotio Cozbi filiae ducis Madian sororis eorum, quae percussa est in die plagae pro sacrilegio Phegor ”.	18 Because they also have acted like enemies against you, and have guilefully deceived you by the idol Phogor, and Cozbi their sister, a daughter of a prince of Madian, who was slain in the day the plague for the sacrilege of Phogor.
