1 Proverbes de Salomon, fils de David, roi d'Israël:	1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
2 pour connaître sagesse et discipline, pour pénétrer les discours profonds,	2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
3 pour acquérir une discipline avisée -- justice, équité, droiture --	3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
4 pour procurer aux simples le savoir-faire, au jeune homme le savoir et la réflexion,	4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
5 que le sage écoute, il augmentera son acquis, et l'homme entendu acquerra l'art de diriger.	5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
6 Pour pénétrer proverbes et sentences obscures, les dits des sages et leurs énigmes.	6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
7 La crainte de Yahvé, principe de savoir: les fous dédaignent sagesse et discipline.	7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
8 Ecoute, mon fils, l'instruction de ton père, ne méprise pas l'enseignement de ta mère:	8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
9 c'est une couronne de grâce pour ta tête, des colliers pour ton cou.	9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
10 Mon fils, si des pécheurs veulent te séduire, n'y va pas!	10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
11 S'ils disent: "Viens avec nous, embusquons-nous pour répandre le sang, sans raison, prenonsl'affût contre l'innocent;	11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
12 comme le shéol, avalons-les tout vifs, tout entiers, tels ceux qui descendent dans la fosse!	12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:
13 Nous trouverons mainte chose précieuse, nous emplirons de butin nos maisons;	13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
14 avec nous tu tireras ta part au sort, nous ferons tous bourse commune!"	14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:
15 Mon fils, ne les suis pas dans leur voie, éloigne tes pas de leur sentier,	15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
16 car leurs pieds courent au mal ils ont hâte de répandre le sang;	16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
17 car c'est en vain qu'on étend le filet sous les yeux de tout volatile.	17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
18 C'est pour répandre leur propre sang qu'ils s'embusquent, contre eux-mêmes, ils sont à l'affût!	18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
19 Tels sont les sentiers de tout homme avide de rapine: elle ôte la vie à ceux qu'elle habite.	19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
20 La Sagesse crie par les rues, sur les places elle élève la voix;	20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
21 à l'angle des carrefours, elle appelle, près des portes, dans la ville, elle prononce son discours:	21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
22 "Jusques à quand, ô niais, aimerez-vous la niaiserie? Et les railleurs se plairont-ils à la raillerie?Et les sots haïront-ils le savoir?	22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
23 Convertissez-vous à mon exhortation, pour vous je vais épancher mon coeur et vous faireconnaître mes paroles.	23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
24 Puisque j'ai appelé et que vous avez refusé, puisque j'ai étendu la main sans que nul y prennegarde,	24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
25 puisque vous avez négligé tous mes conseils et que vous n'avez pas voulu de mon exhortation,	25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
26 à mon tour, je me rirai de votre détresse, je me moquerai quand viendra sur vous l'épouvante,	26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
27 quand l'épouvante viendra sur vous comme l'orage, quand votre détresse arrivera comme untourbillon, quand l'épreuve et l'angoisse fondront sur vous.	27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
28 Alors ils m'appelleront, mais je ne répondrai pas; ils me chercheront et ne me trouveront pas.	28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
29 Ils ont détesté le savoir, ils n'ont pas choisi la crainte de Yahvé,	29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
30 ils n'ont pas voulu de mon conseil, ils ont méprisé toutes mes exhortations:	30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
31 ils mangeront donc du fruit de leurs errements, ils se rassasieront de leurs propres conseils!	31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
32 Car l'égarement des niais les tue, l'insouciance des sots les mène à leur perte;	32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
33 mais qui m'écoute demeure en sécurité, il sera tranquille, sans craindre le malheur."	33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
