NEW AMERICAN BIBLERevised Standard Version Catholic Edition
My son, forget not my teaching, keep in mind my commands;1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments;
For many days, and years of life, and peace, will they bring you.2 for length of days and years of life and abundant welfare will they give you.
Let not kindness and fidelity leave you; bind them around your neck;3 Let not loyalty and faithfulness forsake you; bind them about your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then will you win favor and good esteem before God and man.4 So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence rely not;5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight.
In all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths.6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes, fear the LORD and turn away from evil;7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.
This will mean health for your flesh and vigor for your bones.8 It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.
Honor the LORD with your wealth, with first fruits of all your produce;9 Honor the LORD with your substance and with the first fruits of all your produce;
Then will your barns be filled with grain, with new wine your vats will overflow.10 then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.
The discipline of the LORD, my son, disdain not; spurn not his reproof;11 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline or be weary of his reproof,
For whom the LORD loves he reproves, and he chastises the son he favors.12 for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.
Happy the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding!13 Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gets understanding,
For her profit is better than profit in silver, and better than gold is her revenue;14 for the gain from it is better than gain from silver and its profit better than gold.
She is more precious than corals, and none of your choice possessions can compare with her.15 She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand, in her left are riches and honor;16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace;17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who grasp her, and he is happy who holds her fast.18 She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called happy.
The LORD by wisdom founded the earth, established the heavens by understanding;19 The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens;
By his knowledge the depths break open, and the clouds drop down dew.20 by his knowledge the deeps broke forth, and the clouds drop down the dew.
My son, let not these slip out of your sight: keep advice and counsel in view;21 My son, keep sound wisdom and discretion; let them not escape from your sight,
So will they be life to your soul, and an adornment for your neck.22 and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck.
Then you may securely go your way; your foot will never stumble;23 Then you will walk on your way securely and your foot will not stumble.
When you lie down, you need not be afraid, when you rest, your sleep will be sweet.24 If you sit down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Be not afraid of sudden terror, of the ruin of the wicked when it comes;25 Do not be afraid of sudden panic, or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes;
For the LORD will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from the snare.26 for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.
Refuse no one the good on which he has a claim when it is in your power to do it for him.27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.
Say not to your neighbor, "Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give," when you can give at once.28 Do not say to your neighbor, "Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it"--when you have it with you.
Plot no evil against your neighbor, against him who lives at peace with you.29 Do not plan evil against your neighbor who dwells trustingly beside you.
Quarrel not with a man without cause, with one who has done you no harm.30 Do not contend with a man for no reason, when he has done you no harm.
Envy not the lawless man and choose none of his ways:31 Do not envy a man of violence and do not choose any of his ways;
To the LORD the perverse man is an abomination, but with the upright is his friendship.32 for the perverse man is an abomination to the LORD, but the upright are in his confidence.
The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but the dwelling of the just he blesses;33 The LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the abode of the righteous.
When he is dealing with the arrogant, he is stern, but to the humble he shows kindness.34 Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he shows favor.
Honor is the possession of wise men, but fools inherit shame.35 The wise will inherit honor, but fools get disgrace.
