NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
1 My son, forget not my teaching, keep in mind my commands;1 Fili mi, ne obliviscaris legis meæ,
et præcepta mea cor tuum custodiat :
2 For many days, and years of life, and peace, will they bring you.2 longitudinem enim dierum, et annos vitæ, et pacem,
apponent tibi.
3 Let not kindness and fidelity leave you; bind them around your neck;3 Misericordia et veritas te non deserant ;
circumda eas gutturi tuo,
et describe in tabulis cordis tui :
4 Then will you win favor and good esteem before God and man.4 et invenies gratiam, et disciplinam bonam,
coram Deo et hominibus.
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence rely not;5 Habe fiduciam in Domino ex toto corde tuo,
et ne innitaris prudentiæ tuæ.
6 In all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths.6 In omnibus viis tuis cogita illum,
et ipse diriget gressus tuos.
7 Be not wise in your own eyes, fear the LORD and turn away from evil;7 Ne sis sapiens apud temetipsum ;
time Deum, et recede a malo :
8 This will mean health for your flesh and vigor for your bones.8 sanitas quippe erit umbilico tuo,
et irrigatio ossium tuorum.
9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with first fruits of all your produce;9 Honora Dominum de tua substantia,
et de primitiis omnium frugum tuarum da ei :
10 Then will your barns be filled with grain, with new wine your vats will overflow.10 et implebuntur horrea tua saturitate,
et vino torcularia tua redundabunt.
11 The discipline of the LORD, my son, disdain not; spurn not his reproof;11 Disciplinam Domini, fili mi, ne abjicias,
nec deficias cum ab eo corriperis :
12 For whom the LORD loves he reproves, and he chastises the son he favors.12 quem enim diligit Dominus, corripit,
et quasi pater in filio complacet sibi.
13 Happy the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding!13 Beatus homo qui invenit sapientiam,
et qui affluit prudentia.
14 For her profit is better than profit in silver, and better than gold is her revenue;14 Melior est acquisitio ejus negotiatione argenti,
et auri primi et purissimi fructus ejus.
15 She is more precious than corals, and none of your choice possessions can compare with her.15 Pretiosior est cunctis opibus,
et omnia quæ desiderantur huic non valent comparari.
16 Long life is in her right hand, in her left are riches and honor;16 Longitudo dierum in dextera ejus,
et in sinistra illius divitiæ et gloria.
17 Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace;17 Viæ ejus viæ pulchræ,
et omnes semitæ illius pacificæ.
18 She is a tree of life to those who grasp her, and he is happy who holds her fast.18 Lignum vitæ est his qui apprehenderint eam,
et qui tenuerit eam beatus.
19 The LORD by wisdom founded the earth, established the heavens by understanding;19 Dominus sapientia fundavit terram ;
stabilivit cælos prudentia.
20 By his knowledge the depths break open, and the clouds drop down dew.20 Sapientia illius eruperunt abyssi,
et nubes rore concrescunt.
21 My son, let not these slip out of your sight: keep advice and counsel in view;21 Fili mi, ne effluant hæc ab oculis tuis.
Custodi legem atque consilium,
22 So will they be life to your soul, and an adornment for your neck.22 et erit vita animæ tuæ,
et gratia faucibus tuis.
23 Then you may securely go your way; your foot will never stumble;23 Tunc ambulabis fiducialiter in via tua,
et pes tuus non impinget.
24 When you lie down, you need not be afraid, when you rest, your sleep will be sweet.24 Si dormieris, non timebis ;
quiesces, et suavis erit somnus tuus.
25 Be not afraid of sudden terror, of the ruin of the wicked when it comes;25 Ne paveas repentino terrore,
et irruentes tibi potentias impiorum.
26 For the LORD will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from the snare.26 Dominus enim erit in latere tuo,
et custodiet pedem tuum, ne capiaris.
27 Refuse no one the good on which he has a claim when it is in your power to do it for him.27 Noli prohibere benefacere eum qui potest :
si vales, et ipse benefac.
28 Say not to your neighbor, "Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give," when you can give at once.28 Ne dicas amico tuo : Vade, et revertere : cras dabo tibi :
cum statim possis dare.
29 Plot no evil against your neighbor, against him who lives at peace with you.29 Ne moliaris amico tuo malum,
cum ille in te habeat fiduciam.
30 Quarrel not with a man without cause, with one who has done you no harm.30 Ne contendas adversus hominem frustra,
cum ipse tibi nihil mali fecerit.
31 Envy not the lawless man and choose none of his ways:31 Ne æmuleris hominem injustum,
nec imiteris vias ejus :
32 To the LORD the perverse man is an abomination, but with the upright is his friendship.32 quia abominatio Domini est omnis illusor,
et cum simplicibus sermocinatio ejus.
33 The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but the dwelling of the just he blesses;33 Egestas a Domino in domo impii ;
habitacula autem justorum benedicentur.
34 When he is dealing with the arrogant, he is stern, but to the humble he shows kindness.34 Ipse deludet illusores,
et mansuetis dabit gratiam.
35 Honor is the possession of wise men, but fools inherit shame.35 Gloriam sapientes possidebunt ;
stultorum exaltatio ignominia.
