NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
1 My son, forget not my teaching, keep in mind my commands;1 Fili mi, ne obliviscaris legis meae,
et praecepta mea cor tuum custodiat;
2 For many days, and years of life, and peace, will they bring you.2 longitudinem enim dierum et annos vitae
et pacem apponent tibi.
3 Let not kindness and fidelity leave you; bind them around your neck;3 Misericordia et veritas te non deserant;
circumda eas gutturi tuo
et describe in tabulis cordis tui,
4 Then will you win favor and good esteem before God and man.4 et invenies gratiam et successum bonum
coram Deo et hominibus.
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence rely not;5 Habe fiduciam in Domino ex toto corde tuo
et ne innitaris prudentiae tuae.
6 In all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths.6 In omnibus viis tuis cogita illum,
et ipse diriget gressus tuos.
7 Be not wise in your own eyes, fear the LORD and turn away from evil;7 Ne sis sapiens apud temetipsum;
time Dominum et recede a malo.
8 This will mean health for your flesh and vigor for your bones.8 Sanitas quippe erit umbilico tuo,
et irrigatio ossibus tuis.
9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with first fruits of all your produce;9 Honora Dominum de tua substantia
et de primitiis omnium frugum tuarum,
10 Then will your barns be filled with grain, with new wine your vats will overflow.10 et implebuntur horrea tua frumento,
et vino torcularia tua redundabunt.
11 The discipline of the LORD, my son, disdain not; spurn not his reproof;11 Disciplinam Domini, fili mi, ne abicias
nec asperneris, cum ab eo corriperis:
12 For whom the LORD loves he reproves, and he chastises the son he favors.12 quem enim diligit, Dominus corripit
et quasi pater in filio complacet sibi.
13 Happy the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding!13 Beatus homo, qui invenit sapientiam
et qui affluit prudentia:
14 For her profit is better than profit in silver, and better than gold is her revenue;14 melior est acquisitio eius negotiatione argenti,
et auro primo fructus eius.
15 She is more precious than corals, and none of your choice possessions can compare with her.15 Pretiosior est cunctis gemmis,
et omnia pretiosa tua huic non valent comparari;
16 Long life is in her right hand, in her left are riches and honor;16 longitudo dierum in dextera eius,
et in sinistra illius divitiae et gloria.
17 Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace;17 Viae eius viae pulchrae,
et omnes semitae illius pacificae.
18 She is a tree of life to those who grasp her, and he is happy who holds her fast.18 Lignum vitae est his, qui apprehenderint eam;
et, qui tenuerit eam, beatus.
19 The LORD by wisdom founded the earth, established the heavens by understanding;19 Dominus sapientia fundavit terram,
stabilivit caelos prudentia;
20 By his knowledge the depths break open, and the clouds drop down dew.20 sapientia illius eruperunt abyssi,
et nubes rorem stillant.
21 My son, let not these slip out of your sight: keep advice and counsel in view;21 Fili mi, ne effluant haec ab oculis tuis;
custodi prudentiam atque consilium,
22 So will they be life to your soul, and an adornment for your neck.22 et erit vita animae tuae,
et gratia collo tuo;
23 Then you may securely go your way; your foot will never stumble;23 tunc ambulabis fiducialiter in via tua,
et pes tuus non impinget.
24 When you lie down, you need not be afraid, when you rest, your sleep will be sweet.24 Si dormieris, non timebis;
quiesces, et suavis erit somnus tuus.
25 Be not afraid of sudden terror, of the ruin of the wicked when it comes;25 Ne paveas repentino terrore
et irruentem tibi turbinem impiorum, cum venerit.
26 For the LORD will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from the snare.26 Dominus enim erit in latere tuo
et custodiet pedem tuum, ne capiaris.
27 Refuse no one the good on which he has a claim when it is in your power to do it for him.27 Noli prohibere beneficium ab eo, cui debetur,
si in potestate manus tuae est, ut facias.
28 Say not to your neighbor, "Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give," when you can give at once.28 Ne dicas amico tuo: “ Vade et revertere,
cras dabo tibi ”, cum statim possis dare.
29 Plot no evil against your neighbor, against him who lives at peace with you.29 Ne moliaris amico tuo malum,
cum ille apud te sedeat cum fiducia.
30 Quarrel not with a man without cause, with one who has done you no harm.30 Ne contendas adversus hominem frustra,
cum ipse tibi nihil mali fecerit.
31 Envy not the lawless man and choose none of his ways:31 Ne aemuleris hominem iniustum
nec imiteris omnes vias eius,
32 To the LORD the perverse man is an abomination, but with the upright is his friendship.32 quia abominatio Domini est omnis pravus,
et cum simplicibus societas eius.
33 The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but the dwelling of the just he blesses;33 Maledictio a Domino in domo impii,
habitacula autem iustorum benedicentur.
34 When he is dealing with the arrogant, he is stern, but to the humble he shows kindness.34 Ipse deludet illusores
et mansuetis dabit gratiam;
35 Honor is the possession of wise men, but fools inherit shame.35 gloriam sapientes possidebunt,
stultorum exaltatio ignominia.
