My son, forget not my teaching, keep in mind my commands; | 1 Fili mi, ne obliviscaris legis meae, et praecepta mea cor tuum custodiat; |
For many days, and years of life, and peace, will they bring you. |
Let not kindness and fidelity leave you; bind them around your neck; | 3 Misericordia et veritas te non deserant; circumda eas gutturi tuo et describe in tabulis cordis tui, |
Then will you win favor and good esteem before God and man. | 4 et invenies gratiam et successum bonum coram Deo et hominibus. |
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence rely not; | 5 Habe fiduciam in Domino ex toto corde tuo et ne innitaris prudentiae tuae. |
In all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths. | 6 In omnibus viis tuis cogita illum, et ipse diriget gressus tuos. |
Be not wise in your own eyes, fear the LORD and turn away from evil; | 7 Ne sis sapiens apud temetipsum; time Dominum et recede a malo. |
This will mean health for your flesh and vigor for your bones. | 8 Sanitas quippe erit umbilico tuo, et irrigatio ossibus tuis. |
Honor the LORD with your wealth, with first fruits of all your produce; | 9 Honora Dominum de tua substantia et de primitiis omnium frugum tuarum, |
Then will your barns be filled with grain, with new wine your vats will overflow. | 10 et implebuntur horrea tua frumento, et vino torcularia tua redundabunt. |
The discipline of the LORD, my son, disdain not; spurn not his reproof; | 11 Disciplinam Domini, fili mi, ne abicias nec asperneris, cum ab eo corriperis: |
For whom the LORD loves he reproves, and he chastises the son he favors. |
Happy the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding!
For her profit is better than profit in silver, and better than gold is her revenue; | 14 melior est acquisitio eius negotiatione argenti, et auro primo fructus eius. |
She is more precious than corals, and none of your choice possessions can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand, in her left are riches and honor; | 16 longitudo dierum in dextera eius, et in sinistra illius divitiae et gloria. |
Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace; | 17 Viae eius viae pulchrae, et omnes semitae illius pacificae. |
She is a tree of life to those who grasp her, and he is happy who holds her fast. |
The LORD by wisdom founded the earth, established the heavens by understanding; | 19 Dominus sapientia fundavit terram, stabilivit caelos prudentia; |
By his knowledge the depths break open, and the clouds drop down dew. | 20 sapientia illius eruperunt abyssi, et nubes rorem stillant. |
My son, let not these slip out of your sight: keep advice and counsel in view; | 21 Fili mi, ne effluant haec ab oculis tuis; custodi prudentiam atque consilium, |
So will they be life to your soul, and an adornment for your neck. | 22 et erit vita animae tuae, et gratia collo tuo; |
Then you may securely go your way; your foot will never stumble; | 23 tunc ambulabis fiducialiter in via tua, et pes tuus non impinget. |
When you lie down, you need not be afraid, when you rest, your sleep will be sweet. |
Be not afraid of sudden terror, of the ruin of the wicked when it comes; | 25 Ne paveas repentino terrore et irruentem tibi turbinem impiorum, cum venerit. |
For the LORD will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from the snare. | 26 Dominus enim erit in latere tuo et custodiet pedem tuum, ne capiaris. |
Refuse no one the good on which he has a claim when it is in your power to do it for him. |
Say not to your neighbor, "Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give," when you can give at once. | 28 Ne dicas amico tuo: “ Vade et revertere, cras dabo tibi ”, cum statim possis dare. |
Plot no evil against your neighbor, against him who lives at peace with you. |
Quarrel not with a man without cause, with one who has done you no harm. | 30 Ne contendas adversus hominem frustra, cum ipse tibi nihil mali fecerit. |
Envy not the lawless man and choose none of his ways: | 31 Ne aemuleris hominem iniustum nec imiteris omnes vias eius, |
To the LORD the perverse man is an abomination, but with the upright is his friendship. |
The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but the dwelling of the just he blesses; | 33 Maledictio a Domino in domo impii, habitacula autem iustorum benedicentur. |
When he is dealing with the arrogant, he is stern, but to the humble he shows kindness. | 34 Ipse deludet illusores et mansuetis dabit gratiam; |
Honor is the possession of wise men, but fools inherit shame. | 35 gloriam sapientes possidebunt, stultorum exaltatio ignominia. |
