1 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:	1 Venuta la mattina, tutti i gran sacerdoti e gli anziani del popolo tennero consiglio contro Gesù, per farlo morire;
2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.	2 e, legatolo, lo condussero e consegnarono al governatore Pilato.
3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,	3 Allora Giuda, il traditore, vedendo che Gesù era stato condannato, preso da rimorso, restituì ai gran sacerdoti e agli anziani i trenta pezzi di argento,
4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.	4 dicendo: «Ho peccato, tradendo sangue innocente». Quelli, però, risposero: «Che c’importa? È affar tuo».
5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.	5 Ed egli, scagliati i pezzi d’argento nel santuario, si allontanò e andò ad impiccarsi.
6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.	6 I gran sacerdoti raccattarono le monete d’argento e dissero: «Non è lecito metterle nella cassa del tempio perché è prezzo di sangue».
7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.	7 E, tenuto consiglio, acquistarono con esse il campo del Vasaio, per la sepoltura degli stranieri.
8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.	8 Ecco perché, fino ad oggi, quel campo è chiamato «il campo del sangue».
9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;	9 Si adempì, allora, ciò che era stato detto dal profeta Geremia: E presero i trenta pezzi d’argento, il prezzo del mercanteggiamento, che i figli di Israele han valutato a prezzo,
10 And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.	10 e li diedero per il campo del Vasaio, secondo quanto mi aveva ordinato il Signore.
11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.	11 Gesù comparve alla presenza del governatore, e il governatore lo interrogò: «Tu sei il re dei Giudei?» «Tu lo dici» rispose Gesù.
12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.	12 E mentre veniva accusato dai gran sacerdoti e dagli anziani, non rispose nulla.
13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?	13 Allora Pilato gli disse: «Non senti di quante cose ti accusano?»
14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.	14 Ma Gesù non gli rispose neppure una parola, sicchè il governatore se ne meravigliò assai.
15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.	15 Ora, ogni festa, il governatore era solito rilasciare alla folla un prigioniero, quello che essa voleva.
16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.	16 C’era, allora, un prigioniero famoso chiamato Barabba.
17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?	17 Pilato disse adunque ai convenuti: «Chi volete che vi rilasci: Barabba o Gesù, detto il Messia?»
18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.	18 Perché egli sapeva che glielo avevano consegnato per invidia.
19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.	19 Mentre egli sedeva in tribunale, sua moglie gli mandò a dire: «Non aver nulla a che fare con quel giusto, perché ho molto sofferto oggi in sogno per causa sua».
20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.	20 I gran sacerdoti e gli anziani, tuttavia, persuasero la folla a chiedere Barabba e a domandar la morte di Gesù.
21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.	21 Il governatore, riprendendo la parola, disse loro: «Quale dei due volete che vi rilasci?» Essi risposero: «Barabba».
22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.	22 «Ma llora — disse Pilato — che ne farò di Gesù, detto il Messia?» ‘Tutti risposero: «Sia crocifisso».
23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.	23 «Che male, dunque, ha fatto?» disse Pilato. Quelli gridavano ancora più forte: «Sia crocifisso!»
24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.	24 Pilato, vedendo che a nulla giovava ma che, al contrario, ne nasceva un tumulto, fatta prender dell’acqua si lavò le mani in presenza della folla, dicendo: «Io sono innocente del sangue di questo giusto. È affar vostro!»
25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.	25 Tutto il popolo rispose: «Il suo sangue ricada su di noi e sui nostri figli!»
26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.	26 Allora rilasciò loro Barabba: Gesù, invece» dopo averlo fatto flagellare, lo consegnò perché fosse crocifisso.
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.	27 Allora i soldati da governatore condussero Gesù nel pretorio intorno tutta la coorte.
28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.	28 Dopo averlo spogliato, lo rivestirono di una clamide scarlatta
29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!	29 e poi, intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela posero sul capo, e una canna nella destra. Poi inginocchiatisi dinanzi a lui, lo schernivano dicendo: «Salve, re dei Giudei!».
30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.	30 E, sputandogli addosso, gli prendevano la canna e lo percuotevano sul capo.
31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.	31 Quando l'ebbero schernito, gli tolsero la clamide e gli rimisero le sue vesti, e lo condussero via per crocifiggerlo.
32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.	32 Nell’uscire, trovarono un uomo di Cirene, chiamato Simone, e lo requisirono per fargli portar i gioco i lui.
33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,	33 Giunti sul luogo detto Golgotha, cioe «luogo del Cranio»,
34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.	34 gli diedero a bere del vino mescolato con fiele; ma egli, assaggiatolo, non ne volle bere.
35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.	35 Quando l'ebbero crocifisso, si divisero. le sue vesti tirandole a sorte.
36 And sitting down they watched him there;	36 Poi, sedutisi, restarono là a fargli la guardia.
37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.	37 Al di sopra della sua testa posero il motivo della sua condanna scritto così: «Questi è Gesù, il re dei Giudei».
38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.	38 Due ladroni vennero allora crocifissi con lui, uno a destra e l'altro a sinistra.
39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,	39 I passanti lo insultarono scrollando la testa
40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.	40 e dicendo: «Tu che distruggi il tempio e in tre giorni lo riedifichi, salva te stesso: se sei Figlio di Dio scendi dalla croce!»
41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,	41 Similmente anche i gran sacerdoti, con gli scribi e gli anziani, se ne facevano beffe dicendo:
42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.	42 «Salvò altri e non può salvare se stesso! È re d'Israele! Discenda, adesso, dalla croce e crederemo in lui!
43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.	43 Ha confidato in Dio, lo liberi Dio adesso, se gli vuol bene; perché egli ha detto: Son Figlio di Dio!”».
44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.	44 Anche i ladroni erano stati crocifissi con lui lo oltraggiavano alla stessa maniera.
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.	45 Dalla sesta ora in poi fino all’ora nona si fece buio su tutta la terra.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?	46 Verso l’ora nona, Gesù diede in un alto grido: «Elì, Elì lemà sabactani?» cioè: «Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato?»
47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.	47 Alcuni degli astanti, sentendolo, dissero: «Costui chiama Elia!»
48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.	48 Subito, uno di loro corse a prendere una spugna e, imbevutala d’aceto e infilatala in una canna, gli dava da bere.
49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.	49 Gli altri dissero: «Lascia! Vediamo se viene Elia a salvarlo!»
50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.	50 Ma Gesù, dopo aver dato di nuovo un alto grido, spirò.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;	51 Ed ecco che la cortina del tempio si squarciò da cima a fondo, in due parti; la terra tremò, le rocce si spaccarono,
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,	52 i sepolcri si aprirono e i corpi di molti santi che erano morti risuscitarono;
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.	53 e, uscendo dai sepolcri dopo la risurrezione di lui, entrarono nella città santa e apparvero a molti.
54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.	54 Alla vista del terremoto, il centurione e quelli che con lui facevano la guardia a Gesù ebbero grande paura e dissero: «Veramente costui era Figlio di Dio!»
55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:	55 C’erano là molte donne che osservavano da lontano: quelle stesse che dalla Galilea avevano seguito Gesù per servirlo.
56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.	56 Tra esse, c’era Maria di Magdala, Maria madre di Giacomo e di Giuseppe, e la madre dei figli di Zebedeo.
57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:	57 Fattasi sera, venne un uomo ricco di Arimathea, chiamato Giuseppe, il quale s’era fatto, anche lui, discepolo di Gesù.
58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.	58 Costui si recò da Pilato e gli chiese il corpo di Gesù. Pilato ordinò che gli fosse dato.
59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,	59 Giuseppe prese il corpo, lo avvolse in un lenzuolo pulito
60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.	60 e lo depose nel proprio sepolcro nuovo, che aveva fatto tagliare nella roccia; poi rotolò una grande pietra all’ingresso del sepolcro e se ne andò.
61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.	61 Maria di Magdala e l’altra Maria erano sedute là, di fronte al sepolcro.
62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,	62 Il giorno dopo, che era il giorno successivo alla Preparazione, i gran sacerdoti e i farisei si recarono insieme da Pilato
63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.	63 e gli dissero: «Signore, ci siamo ricordati che quell’impostore, mentre era ancora vivo, ha detto: “Dopo tre giorni risorgerò”.
64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.	64 Ordina, dunque, che il sepolcro sia tenuto al sicuro fino al terzo giorno, perché non vengano i suoi discepoli a rubare il corpo e dicano al popolo: “È risuscitato dai morti”: ultimo inganno che sarebbe peggiore del primo!»
65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.	65 «Avete una guardia — disse loro Pilato — andate, prendete le vostre misure di sicurezza come intendete».
66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.	66 Ed essi andarono ad assicurarsi del sepolcro, sigillando la pietra e ponendovi la guardia.
