KING JAMES BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:1 When morning came, al the chief priests and the elders of the people met in council to bring about thedeath of Jesus.
And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.2 They had him bound and led him away to hand him over to Pilate, the governor.
Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,3 When he found that Jesus had been condemned, then Judas, his betrayer, was fil ed with remorse andtook the thirty silver pieces back to the chief priests and elders
Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.4 saying, 'I have sinned. I have betrayed innocent blood.' They replied, 'What is that to us? That is yourconcern.'
And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.5 And flinging down the silver pieces in the sanctuary he made off, and went and hanged himself.
And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.6 The chief priests picked up the silver pieces and said, 'It is against the Law to put this into the treasury;it is blood-money.'
And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.7 So they discussed the matter and with it bought the potter's field as a graveyard for foreigners,
Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.8 and this is why the field is stil cal ed the Field of Blood.
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;9 The word spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was then fulfil ed: And they took the thirty silverpieces, the sum at which the precious One was priced by the children of Israel,
And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.10 and they gave them for the potter's field, just as the Lord directed me.
And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.11 Jesus, then, was brought before the governor, and the governor put to him this question, 'Are you theking of the Jews?' Jesus replied, 'It is you who say it.'
And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.12 But when he was accused by the chief priests and the elders he refused to answer at al .
Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?13 Pilate then said to him, 'Do you not hear how many charges they have made against you?'
And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.14 But to the governor's amazement, he offered not a word in answer to any of the charges.
Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.15 At festival time it was the governor's practice to release a prisoner for the people, anyone they chose.
And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.16 Now there was then a notorious prisoner whose name was Barabbas.
Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?17 So when the crowd gathered, Pilate said to them, 'Which do you want me to release for you:Barabbas, or Jesus who is cal ed Christ?'
For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.18 For Pilate knew it was out of jealousy that they had handed him over.
When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.19 Now as he was seated in the chair of judgement, his wife sent him a message, 'Have nothing to dowith that upright man; I have been extremely upset today by a dream that I had about him.'
But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.20 The chief priests and the elders, however, had persuaded the crowd to demand the release ofBarabbas and the execution of Jesus.
The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.21 So when the governor spoke and asked them, 'Which of the two do you want me to release for you?'they said, 'Barabbas.'
Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.22 Pilate said to them, 'But in that case, what am I to do with Jesus who is cal ed Christ?' They al said,'Let him be crucified!'
And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.23 He asked, 'But what harm has he done?' But they shouted all the louder, 'Let him be crucified!'
When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.24 Then Pilate saw that he was making no impression, that in fact a riot was imminent. So he took somewater, washed his hands in front of the crowd and said, 'I am innocent of this man's blood. It is your concern.'
Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.25 And the people, every one of them, shouted back, 'Let his blood be on us and on our children!'
Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.26 Then he released Barabbas for them. After having Jesus scourged he handed him over to becrucified.
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.27 Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus with them into the Praetorium and col ected the whole cohortround him.
And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.28 And they stripped him and put a scarlet cloak round him,
And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!29 and having twisted some thorns into a crown they put this on his head and placed a reed in his righthand. To make fun of him they knelt to him saying, 'Hail, king of the Jews!'
And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.30 And they spat on him and took the reed and struck him on the head with it.
And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.31 And when they had finished making fun of him, they took off the cloak and dressed him in his ownclothes and led him away to crucifixion.
And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.32 On their way out, they came across a man from Cyrene, cal ed Simon, and enlisted him to carry hiscross.
And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,33 When they had reached a place cal ed Golgotha, that is, the place of the skul ,
They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.34 they gave him wine to drink mixed with gal , which he tasted but refused to drink.
And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.35 When they had finished crucifying him they shared out his clothing by casting lots,
And sitting down they watched him there;36 and then sat down and stayed there keeping guard over him.
And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.37 Above his head was placed the charge against him; it read: 'This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.'
Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.38 Then two bandits were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.
And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,39 The passers-by jeered at him; they shook their heads
And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.40 and said, 'So you would destroy the Temple and in three days rebuild it! Then save yourself if you areGod's son and come down from the cross!'
Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,41 The chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him in the same way,
He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.42 with the words, 'He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the king of Israel; let him come downfrom the cross now, and we wil believe in him.
He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.43 He has put his trust in God; now let God rescue him if he wants him. For he did say, "I am God'sson." '
The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.44 Even the bandits who were crucified with him taunted him in the same way.
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.45 From the sixth hour there was darkness over al the land until the ninth hour.
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?46 And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eli, eli, lama sabachthani?' that is, 'MyGod, my God, why have you forsaken me?'
Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.47 When some of those who stood there heard this, they said, 'The man is cal ing on Elijah,'
And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.48 and one of them quickly ran to get a sponge which he fil ed with vinegar and, putting it on a reed, gave it him to drink.
The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.49 But the rest of them said, 'Wait! And see if Elijah wil come to save him.'
Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.50 But Jesus, again crying out in a loud voice, yielded up his spirit.
And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;51 And suddenly, the veil of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, therocks were split,
And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,52 the tombs opened and the bodies of many holy people rose from the dead,
And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.53 and these, after his resurrection, came out of the tombs, entered the holy city and appeared to anumber of people.
Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.54 The centurion, together with the others guarding Jesus, had seen the earthquake and al that wastaking place, and they were terrified and said, 'In truth this man was son of God.'
And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:55 And many women were there, watching from a distance, the same women who had followed Jesusfrom Galilee and looked after him.
Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.56 Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother ofZebedee's sons.
When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:57 When it was evening, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, cal ed Joseph, who had himself becomea disciple of Jesus.
He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be handed over.
And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,59 So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean shroud
And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.60 and put it in his own new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock. He then rol ed a large stoneacross the entrance of the tomb and went away.
And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.61 Now Mary of Magdala and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the sepulchre.
Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,62 Next day, that is, when Preparation Day was over, the chief priests and the Pharisees went in a bodyto Pilate
Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.63 and said to him, 'Your Excel ency, we recal that this impostor said, while he was still alive, "Afterthree days I shall rise again."
Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.64 Therefore give the order to have the sepulchre kept secure until the third day, for fear his disciplescome and steal him away and tel the people, "He has risen from the dead." This last piece of fraud would beworse than what went before.'
Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.65 Pilate said to them, 'You may have your guard; go and make al as secure as you know how.'
So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.66 So they went and made the sepulchre secure, putting seals on the stone and mounting a guard.
