1 Accidit autem post haec, ut moreretur Naas rex filiorum Ammon, et regnaret filius eius pro eo.	1 After this, when Nahash king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him,
2 Dixitque David: “ Faciam misericordiam cum Hanon filio Naas; praestitit enim pater eius mihi gratiam ”. Misitque David nuntios ad consolandum eum super morte patris sui. Qui cum pervenissent in terram filiorum Ammon, ut consolarentur Hanon,	2 David thought, 'I shal show Hanun son of Nahash the same faithful love as his father showed me.'And David sent representatives to offer him condolences over his father. But when David's representativesreached Hanun in the Ammonites' country to present these condolences,
3 dixerunt principes filiorum Ammon ad Hanon: “ Tu forsitan putas quod David honoris causa in patrem tuum miserit, qui consolentur te; nec animadvertis quod, ut explorent et investigent et evertant terram tuam, venerint ad te servi eius ”.	3 the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun, 'Do you real y think David means to honour your father when hesends you messengers with sympathy? On the contrary, the reason why his representatives have come to you isto explore, overthrow and reconnoitre the country.'
4 Igitur Hanon pueros David tulit et rasit et praecidit tunicas eorum a natibus usque ad pedes et dimisit eos.	4 Whereupon Hanun seized David's representatives, shaved them, cut their clothes off half-way up,right by their buttocks, and sent them away.
5 Qui cum abissent et hoc mandassent David, misit in occursum eorum — grandem enim contumeliam sustinuerant — et praecepit, ut manerent in Iericho, donec cresceret barba eorum, et tunc reverterentur.	5 As soon as David was told how the men had been treated, he sent someone to meet them, since themen were overcome with shame. 'Stay in Jericho,' the king said, 'until your beards have grown, and come backthen.'
6 Videntes autem filii Ammon quod odiosos se fecissent David, tam Hanon quam reliquus populus miserunt mille talenta argenti, ut conducerent sibi de Mesopotamia et de Syria Maacha et de Soba currus et equites;	6 When the Ammonites realised that they had antagonised David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent athousand talents of silver to hire chariots and cavalry from the Aramaeans of Upper Mesopotamia, of Maacahand of Zobah.
7 conduxeruntque sibi triginta duo milia curruum et regem Maacha cum populo eius. Qui cum venissent, castrametati sunt e regione Medaba; filii quoque Ammon congregati de urbibus suis venerunt ad bellum.	7 They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah with his people, who came andencamped before Medeba, while the Ammonites, having left their towns and mustered, were advancing to thewar.
8 Quod cum audisset David, misit Ioab et omnem exercitum virorum fortium.	8 When David heard this, he sent Joab with the whole army, the champions.
9 Egressique filii Ammon direxerunt aciem iuxta portam civitatis; reges autem, qui ad auxilium venerant, separatim in agro steterunt.	9 The Ammonites marched out and drew up their line of battle at the city gate, while the kings who hadcome kept their distance in the open country.
10 Igitur Ioab intellegens bellum et ex adverso et post tergum contra se fieri elegit viros fortissimos de universo Israel et perrexit contra Syrum;	10 Joab, seeing that he had to fight on two fronts, to his front and to his rear, chose the best of Israel'spicked men and drew them up in line facing the Aramaeans.
11 reliquam autem partem populi dedit sub manu Abisai fratris sui, et perrexerunt contra filios Ammon.	11 He entrusted the rest of the army to his brother Abishai, and drew them up in line facing theAmmonites.
12 Dixitque: “ Si vicerit me Syrus, auxilio eris mihi; si autem superaverint te filii Ammon, ero tibi in praesidium.	12 'If the Aramaeans prove too strong for me,' he said, 'you must come to my help; if the Ammonitesprove too strong for you, I shal come to yours.
13 Confortare et agamus viriliter pro populo nostro et pro urbibus Dei nostri; Dominus autem, quod in conspectu suo bonum est, faciet ”.	13 Be brave and let us fight valiantly, for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God! And letYahweh dispose as he thinks fit!'
14 Appropinquavit ergo Ioab et populus, qui cum eo erat, contra Syrum ad proelium, et fugerunt a facie eorum.	14 Joab and the force with him joined battle with the Aramaeans, who fled at his onslaught.
15 Porro filii Ammon videntes quod fugisset Syrus, ipsi quoque fugerunt Abisai fratrem eius et ingressi sunt civitatem. Reversusque est etiam Ioab in Ierusalem.	15 When the Ammonites saw that the Aramaeans had fled, they too fled from his brother Abishai andwithdrew into the city. Joab then returned to Jerusalem.
16 Videns autem Syrus quod cecidisset coram Israel, misit nuntios et adduxit Syrum, qui erat trans fluvium; Sophach autem princeps militiae Adadezer erat dux eorum.	16 The Aramaeans, realising that Israel had got the better of them, sent messengers and mobilised theAramaeans living on the other side of the River, with Shophach, commander of Hadadezer's army, at their head.
17 Quod cum nuntiatum esset David, congregavit universum Israel et transivit Iordanem venitque ad eos et direxit ex adverso aciem et pugnavit cum eis.	17 David, being informed of this, mustered al Israel, crossed the Jordan, made contact with them andtook up position near them. David drew up his line of battle facing the Aramaeans, who then engaged him.
18 Fugit autem Syrus Israel, et interfecit David de Syris septem milia curruum et quadraginta milia peditum et Sophach exercitus principem.	18 But the Aramaeans fled from Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their chariot teams and fortythousand men; and also Shophach, the commander of the army.
19 Videntes autem servi Adadezer se ab Israel esse superatos, fecerunt pacem cum David et servierunt ei; noluitque ultra Syria auxilium praebere filiis Ammon.	19 When Hadadezer's vassals saw that Israel had got the better of them, they made peace with Davidand became his subjects. The Aramaeans were unwil ing to give any more help to the Ammonites.
