Lettera di Giacomo 4

1 E donde le guerre, e le liti tra di voi, se non di qui: dalle vostre concupiscenze, le quali militano nelle vostre membra?	1 Where do these wars and battles between yourselves first start? Is it not precisely in the desiresfighting inside your own selves?
2 Desiderate, e non avete: uccidete, e zelate: e non vi riesce di conseguire: litigate, e fate guerra: e non ottenete l'intento, perché non domandate.	2 You want something and you lack it; so you kil . You have an ambition that you cannot satisfy; so youfight to get your way by force. It is because you do not pray that you do not receive;
3 Chiedete, e non ottenete: perche chiedete malamente onde spendere ne' vostri piaceri.	3 when you do pray and do not receive, it is because you prayed wrongly, wanting to indulge yourpassions.
4 Adulteri, e non sapete voi che l'amicizia di questo mondo è nimistà con Dio? Chiunque pertanto vorrà esser amico di questo mondo, vien costituito nemico di Dio.	4 Adulterers! Do you not realise that love for the world is hatred for God? Anyone who chooses the worldfor a friend is constituted an enemy of God.
5 Credete forse, che invano dica la scrittura: lo spirito, che abita in voi, vi ama con amor geloso?	5 Can you not see the point of the saying in scripture, 'The longing of the spirit he sent to dwel in us is ajealous longing.'?
6 Ed egli da una grazia maggiore. Per la qual cosa ella dice: Dio resiste a' superbi, e agli umili da la grazia.	6 But he has given us an even greater grace, as scripture says: God opposes the proud but he accordshis favour to the humble.
7 Siate adunque soggetti a Dio, e resistete al diavolo, ed ei fuggirà da voi.	7 Give in to God, then; resist the devil, and he wil run away from you.
8 Accostatevi a Dio, e a voi si accosterà. Mondate le mani, o peccatori: e purificate i cuori, o voi doppi di animo.	8 The nearer you go to God, the nearer God wil come to you. Clean your hands, you sinners, and clearyour minds, you waverers.
9 Affliggetevi, e siate in duolo, e piangete: il vostro riso si cangi in lutto, e il gaudio in mestizia.	9 Appreciate your wretchedness, and weep for it in misery. Your laughter must be turned to grief, yourhappiness to gloom.
10 Umiliatevi nel cospetto del Signore, e vi esalterà.	10 Humble yourselves before the Lord and he wil lift you up.
11 Non dite male l'uno dell'altro, o fratelli. Chi parla male del fratello, o giudica il suo fratello, parla contro la legge, e giudica la legge. Che se giudichi la legge, non sei osservator della legge, ma giudice.	11 Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who slanders a brother, or condemns one, is speakingagainst the Law and condemning the Law. But if you condemn the Law, you have ceased to be subject to it andbecome a judge over it.
12 Uno è il legistatore, ed il giudice, il quale può mandar in perdizione, e salvare.	12 There is only one lawgiver and he is the only judge and has the power to save or to destroy. Who areyou to give a verdict on your neighbour?
13 Ma tu, che giudichi il prossimo, chi se' tu? Su via adesso voi, che dite: Oggi, o domane anderemo a quella città, e vi starem per un anno, e mercanteremo, e farem guadagno:	13 Wel now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow, we are off to this or that town; we are going to spend ayear there, trading, and make some money.'
14 Voi, che non sapete quel, che sarà domane.	14 You never know what wil happen tomorrow: you are no more than a mist that appears for a little whileand then disappears.
15 Imperocché che è la vostra vita? Ell' è un vapore, che per poco compare, e poi svanisce. In cambio di dire: se il Signore vorrà; e se sarem vivi, farem questa, o quella cosa.	15 Instead of this, you should say, 'If it is the Lord's wil , we shal stil be alive to do this or that.'
16 Ora poi vi vantate della vostra superbia. Ogni vantamento di tal fatta è malvagio.	16 But as it is, how boastful and loud -- mouthed you are! Boasting of this kind is always wrong.
17 Chi adunque conosce il bene, che dee fare, e noi fa, egli è in peccato.	17 Everyone who knows what is the right thing to do and does not do it commits a sin.
