1 Quando Davide ebbe finito di parlare con Saul, l'anima di Giònata s'era già talmente legata all'anima di Davide, che Giònata lo amò come se stesso.	1 When David had finished talking to Saul, Jonathan felt an instant affection for David; Jonathan lovedhim like his very self;
2 Saul in quel giorno lo prese con sé e non lo lasciò tornare a casa di suo padre.	2 Saul engaged him that very day and would not let him go home to his father.
3 Giònata strinse con Davide un patto, perché lo amava come se stesso.	3 Jonathan made a pact with David, since he loved him like his very self;
4 Giònata si tolse il mantello che indossava e lo diede a Davide e vi aggiunse i suoi abiti, la sua spada, il suo arco e la cintura.	4 Jonathan took off the cloak which he was wearing and gave it to David, and his armour too, evenincluding his sword, his bow and his belt.
5 Davide riusciva in tutti gli incarichi che Saul gli affidava, così che Saul lo pose al comando dei guerrieri ed era gradito a tutto il popolo e anche ai ministri di Saul.	5 Wherever David was sent on a mission by Saul, he was successful, and Saul put him in command ofthe fighting men; al the people respected him and so did Saul's staff.
6 Al loro rientrare, mentre Davide tornava dall'uccisione del Filisteo, uscirono le donne da tutte le città d'Israele a cantare e a danzare incontro al re Saul, accompagnandosi con i timpani, con grida di gioia e con sistri.	6 On their return, when David was coming back from kil ing the Philistine, the women came out of al thetowns of Israel singing and dancing to meet King Saul, with tambourines, sistrums and cries of joy;
7 Le donne danzavano e cantavano alternandosi: "Saul ha ucciso i suoi mille, Davide i suoi diecimila".	7 and as they danced the women sang: Saul has kil ed his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.
8 Saul ne fu molto irritato e gli parvero cattive quelle parole. Diceva: "Hanno dato a Davide diecimila, a me ne hanno dato mille. Non gli manca altro che il regno".	8 Saul was very angry; the incident displeased him. 'They have given David the tens of thousands,' hesaid, 'but me only the thousands; what more can he have, except the throne?'
9 Così da quel giorno in poi Saul si ingelosì di Davide.	9 And Saul watched David jealously from that day onwards.
10 Il giorno dopo, un cattivo spirito sovrumano s'impossessò di Saul, il quale si mise a delirare in casa. Davide suonava la cetra come i giorni precedenti e Saul teneva in mano la lancia.	10 The fol owing day, an evil spirit from God seized on Saul and he fell into a frenzy while he wasindoors. David played the harp as on other occasions; Saul had a spear in his hand.
11 Saul impugnò la lancia, pensando: "Inchioderò Davide al muro!". Ma Davide gli sfuggì davanti per due volte.	11 Saul brandished the spear; he said, 'I wil pin David to the wall!' David evaded him twice.
12 Saul cominciò a sentir timore di fronte a Davide, perché il Signore era con lui, mentre si era ritirato da Saul.	12 Saul feared David, since Yahweh was with him and had withdrawn from Saul.
13 Saul lo allontanò da sé e lo fece capo di migliaia e Davide andava e veniva alla testa del suo gruppo.	13 So Saul removed him from his presence and appointed him commander of a thousand; he led thepeople on campaign.
14 Davide riusciva in tutte le sue imprese, poiché il Signore era con lui.	14 In al his expeditions, David was successful and Yahweh was with him.
15 Saul, vedendo che riusciva proprio sempre, aveva timore di lui.	15 And Saul, seeing how very successful he was, was afraid of him.
16 Ma tutto Israele e Giuda amavano Davide, perché egli si muoveva alla loro testa.	16 Al Israel and Judah loved David, however, since he was their leader on campaign.
17 Ora Saul disse a Davide: "Ecco Merab, mia figlia maggiore. La dò in moglie a te. Tu dovrai essere il mio guerriero e combatterai le battaglie del Signore". Saul pensava: "Non sia contro di lui la mia mano, ma contro di lui sia la mano dei Filistei".	17 Saul said to David, 'This is my elder daughter Merab; I shal give her to you in marriage; but you mustserve me bravely and fight Yahweh's wars.' Saul thought, 'Better than strike the blow myself, let the Philistinesdo it!'
18 Davide rispose a Saul: "Chi sono io e che importanza ha la famiglia di mio padre in Israele, perché io possa diventare genero del re?".	18 David replied to Saul, 'Who am I and what is my lineage -- and my father's family -- in Israel, for meto become the king's son-in-law?'
19 Ma ecco, quando venne il tempo di dare Merab, figlia di Saul, a Davide, fu data invece in moglie ad Adriel di Mecola.	19 When the time came for Merab daughter of Saul to be given to David, she was given to Adriel ofMeholah instead.
20 Intanto Mikal, l'altra figlia di Saul, s'invaghì di Davide; ne riferirono a Saul e la cosa gli piacque.	20 Now Michal daughter of Saul fel in love with David. When Saul heard this he was pleased.
21 Saul diceva: "Gliela darò, ma sarà per lui una trappola e la mano dei Filistei cadrà su di lui". E Saul disse a Davide: "Oggi hai una seconda occasione per diventare mio genero".	21 He thought, 'Yes, I shall give her to him; she can be the snare for him, so that the Philistines wil gethim.' (On two occasions, Saul told David, 'Today, you shall be my son-in-law.')
22 Quindi Saul ordinò ai suoi ministri: "Dite di nascosto a Davide: Ecco, tu piaci al re e i suoi ministri ti amano. Su, dunque, diventa genero del re".	22 Saul gave instructions to his servants, 'Have a private word with David and say, "Look, the king isfond of you and al his servants love you -- why not be the king's son-in-law?" '
23 I ministri di Saul sussurrarono all'orecchio di Davide queste parole e Davide rispose: "Vi pare piccola cosa divenir genero del re? Io sono povero e uomo di bassa condizione".	23 Saul's servants repeated these words in David's ear, to which David replied, 'Do you think thatbecoming the king's son-in-law is a trivial matter; I have neither wealth nor position.'
24 I ministri di Saul gli riferirono: "Davide ha risposto in questo modo".	24 Saul's servants then reported back, 'This is what David said.'
25 Allora Saul disse: "Riferite a Davide: Il re non pretende il prezzo nuziale, ma solo cento prepuzi di Filistei, perché sia fatta vendetta dei nemici del re". Saul pensava di far cadere Davide in mano ai Filistei.	25 Saul replied, 'Tel David this, "The king desires no bride-price except one hundred Philistineforeskins, in vengeance on the king's enemies." ' Saul was counting on getting David killed by the Philistines.
26 I ministri di lui riferirono a Davide queste parole e piacque a Davide tale condizione per diventare genero del re. Non erano ancora passati i giorni fissati,	26 When his servants repeated this to David, David thought it would be a fine thing to be the king's son-in-law. And no time was lost
27 quando Davide si alzò, partì con i suoi uomini e uccise tra i Filistei duecento uomini. Davide riportò i loro prepuzi e li contò davanti al re per diventare genero del re. Saul gli diede in moglie la figlia Mikal.	27 before David got up to go, he and his men, and kil ed two hundred of the Philistines. David broughttheir foreskins back and counted them out before the king, so that he could be the king's son-in-law. Saul thengave him his daughter Michal in marriage.
28 Saul si accorse che il Signore era con Davide e che Mikal figlia di Saul lo amava.	28 Saul could not but see that Yahweh was with David, and that the whole House of Israel loved him;
29 Saul ebbe ancor più paura nei riguardi di Davide; Saul fu nemico di Davide per tutti i suoi giorni.	29 Saul became more afraid of David than ever, and became his inveterate enemy.
30 I capi dei Filistei facevano sortite, ma Davide, ogni volta che uscivano, riportava successi maggiori di tutti i ministri di Saul e in tal modo si acquistò grande fama.	30 The Philistine chiefs kept mounting their campaigns but, whenever they did so, David proved moresuccessful than any of Saul's staff; consequently he gained great renown.
