1 C'era un uomo di Ramatàim, uno Zufita delle montagne di Efraim, chiamato Elkana, figlio di Ierocàm, figlio di Eliàu, figlio di Tòcu, figlio di Zuf, l'Efraimita.	1 There was a man of Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the highlands of Ephraim whose name was Elkanahson of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
2 Aveva due mogli, l'una chiamata Anna, l'altra Peninna. Peninna aveva figli mentre Anna non ne aveva.	2 He had two wives, one called Hannah, the other Peninnah; Peninnah had children but Hannah hadnone.
3 Quest'uomo andava ogni anno dalla sua città per prostrarsi e sacrificare al Signore degli eserciti in Silo, dove stavano i due figli di Eli, Cofni e Pìncas, sacerdoti del Signore.	3 Every year this man used to go up from his town to worship, and to sacrifice to Yahweh Sabaoth atShiloh. (The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there as priests of Yahweh.)
4 Un giorno Elkana offrì il sacrificio. Ora egli aveva l'abitudine di dare alla moglie Peninna e a tutti i figli e le figlie di lei le loro parti.	4 One day Elkanah offered a sacrifice. Now he used to give portions to Peninnah and to al her sons anddaughters;
5 Ad Anna invece dava una parte sola; ma egli amava Anna, sebbene il Signore ne avesse reso sterile il grembo.	5 to Hannah, however, he would give only one portion: for, although he loved Hannah more, Yahweh hadmade her barren.
6 La sua rivale per giunta l'affliggeva con durezza a causa della sua umiliazione, perché il Signore aveva reso sterile il suo grembo.	6 Furthermore, her rival would taunt and provoke her, because Yahweh had made her womb barren.
7 Così succedeva ogni anno: tutte le volte che salivano alla casa del Signore, quella la mortificava. Anna dunque si mise a piangere e non voleva prendere cibo.	7 And this went on year after year; every time they went up to the temple of Yahweh she used to taunther. On that day she wept and would not eat anything;
8 Elkana suo marito le disse: "Anna, perché piangi? Perché non mangi? Perché è triste il tuo cuore? Non sono forse io per te meglio di dieci figli?".	8 so her husband Elkanah said, 'Hannah, why are you crying? Why are you not eating anything? Why areyou so sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?'
9 Anna, dopo aver mangiato in Silo e bevuto, si alzò e andò a presentarsi al Signore. In quel momento il sacerdote Eli stava sul sedile davanti a uno stipite del tempio del Signore.	9 When they had finished eating in the room, Hannah got up and stood before Yahweh. Eli the priest wassitting on his seat by the doorpost of the temple of Yahweh.
10 Essa era afflitta e innalzò la preghiera al Signore, piangendo amaramente.	10 In the bitterness of her soul she prayed to Yahweh with many tears,
11 Poi fece questo voto: "Signore degli eserciti, se vorrai considerare la miseria della tua schiava e ricordarti di me, se non dimenticherai la tua schiava e darai alla tua schiava un figlio maschio, io lo offrirò al Signore per tutti i giorni della sua vita e il rasoio non passerà sul suo capo".	11 and she made this vow, 'Yahweh Sabaoth! Should you condescend to notice the humiliation of yourservant and keep her in mind instead of disregarding your servant, and give her a boy, I wil give him to Yahwehfor the whole of his life and no razor shal ever touch his head.'
12 Mentre essa prolungava la preghiera davanti al Signore, Eli stava osservando la sua bocca.	12 While she went on praying to Yahweh, Eli was watching her mouth,
13 Anna pregava in cuor suo e si muovevano soltanto le labbra, ma la voce non si udiva; perciò Eli la ritenne ubriaca.	13 for Hannah was speaking under her breath; her lips were moving but her voice could not be heard,and Eli thought that she was drunk.
14 Le disse Eli: "Fino a quando rimarrai ubriaca? Lìberati dal vino che hai bevuto!".	14 Eli said, 'How much longer are you going to stay drunk? Get rid of your wine.'
15 Anna rispose: "No, mio signore, io sono una donna affranta e non ho bevuto né vino né altra bevanda inebriante, ma sto solo sfogandomi davanti al Signore.	15 'No, my lord,' Hannah replied, 'I am a woman in great trouble; I have not been drinking wine or strongdrink -- I am pouring out my soul before Yahweh.
16 Non considerare la tua serva una donna iniqua, poiché finora mi ha fatto parlare l'eccesso del mio dolore e della mia amarezza".	16 Do not take your servant for a worthless woman; al this time I have been speaking from the depth ofmy grief and my resentment.'
17 Allora Eli le rispose: "Va' in pace e il Dio d'Israele ascolti la domanda che gli hai fatto".	17 Eli then replied, 'Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant what you have asked of him.'
18 Essa replicò: "Possa la tua serva trovare grazia ai tuoi occhi". Poi la donna se ne andò per la sua via e il suo volto non fu più come prima.	18 To which she said, 'May your servant find favour in your sight.' With that, the woman went away; shebegan eating and was dejected no longer.
19 Il mattino dopo si alzarono e dopo essersi prostrati davanti al Signore tornarono a casa in Rama. Elkana si unì a sua moglie e il Signore si ricordò di lei.	19 They got up early in the morning and, after worshipping Yahweh, set out and went home to Ramah.Elkanah lay with his wife Hannah, and Yahweh remembered her.
20 Così al finir dell'anno Anna concepì e partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Samuele. "Perché - diceva - dal Signore l'ho impetrato".	20 Hannah conceived and, in due course, gave birth to a son, whom she named Samuel, 'since', shesaid, 'I asked Yahweh for him.'
21 Quando poi Elkana andò con tutta la famiglia a offrire il sacrificio di ogni anno al Signore e a soddisfare il voto,	21 Elkanah, the husband, went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to Yahweh and to fulfilhis vow.
22 Anna non andò, perché diceva al marito: "Non verrò, finché il bambino non sia divezzato e io possa condurlo a vedere il volto del Signore; poi resterà là per sempre".	22 However, Hannah did not go up, having said to her husband, 'Not before the child has been weaned.Then I shal bring him and present him before Yahweh and he will stay there for ever.'
23 Le rispose Elkana suo marito: "Fa' pure quanto ti sembra meglio; rimani finché tu l'abbia divezzato; soltanto adempia il Signore la tua parola". La donna rimase e allattò il figlio, finché l'ebbe divezzato.	23 Elkanah her husband then said to her, 'Do what you think fit; wait until you have weaned him. MayYahweh bring about what he has said.' So the woman stayed behind and nursed her child until she weaned him.
24 Dopo averlo divezzato, andò con lui, portando un giovenco di tre anni, un''efa' di farina e un otre di vino e venne alla casa del Signore a Silo e il fanciullo era con loro.	24 When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, as wel as a three-year-old bul , an ephah offlour and a skin of wine, and took him into the temple of Yahweh at Shiloh; the child was very young.
25 Immolato il giovenco, presentarono il fanciullo a Eli	25 They sacrificed the bul and led the child to Eli.
26 e Anna disse: "Ti prego, mio signore. Per la tua vita, signor mio, io sono quella donna che era stata qui presso di te a pregare il Signore.	26 She said, 'If you please, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood beside you here,praying to Yahweh.
27 Per questo fanciullo ho pregato e il Signore mi ha concesso la grazia che gli ho chiesto.	27 This is the child for which I was praying, and Yahweh has granted me what I asked of him.
28 Perciò anch'io lo dò in cambio al Signore: per tutti i giorni della sua vita egli è ceduto al Signore". E si prostrarono là davanti al Signore.	28 Now I make him over to Yahweh for the whole of his life. He is made over to Yahweh.' They thenworshipped Yahweh there.
