1 Chi mi darà nel deserto un rifugio per viandanti? Io lascerei il mio popolo e mi allontanerei da lui, perché sono tutti adùlteri, una massa di traditori.	1 Would that I had in the desert a travelers' lodge! That I might leave my people and depart from them. They are all adulterers, a faithless band.
2 Tendono la loro lingua come un arco; la menzogna e non la verità domina nel paese. Passano da un delitto all'altro e non conoscono il Signore.	2 They ready their tongues like a drawn bow; with lying, and not with truth, they hold forth in the land. They go from evil to evil, but me they know not, says the LORD.
3 Ognuno si guardi dal suo amico, non fidatevi neppure del fratello, poiché ogni fratello inganna il fratello, e ogni amico va spargendo calunnie.	3 Be on your guard, everyone against his neighbor; put no trust in any brother. Every brother apes Jacob, the supplanter, every friend is guilty of slander.
4 Ognuno si beffa del suo prossimo, nessuno dice la verità. Hanno abituato la lingua a dire menzogne, operano l'iniquità, incapaci di convertirsi.	4 Each one deceives the other, no one speaks the truth. They have accustomed their tongues to lying, and are perverse, and cannot repent.
5 Angheria sopra angheria, inganno su inganno; rifiutano di conoscere il Signore.	5 Violence upon violence, deceit upon deceit: They refuse to recognize me, says the LORD.
6 Perciò dice il Signore degli eserciti: "Ecco li raffinerò al crogiuolo e li saggerò; come dovrei comportarmi con il mio popolo?	6 Therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: I will smelt them and test them; how else should I deal with their wickedness?
7 Una saetta micidiale è la loro lingua, inganno le parole della loro bocca. Ognuno parla di pace con il prossimo, mentre nell'intimo gli ordisce un tranello	7 A murderous arrow is his tongue, his mouth utters deceit; He speaks cordially with his friends, but in his heart he lays an ambush!
8 Non dovrei forse punirli per tali cose? Oracolo del Signore. Di un popolo come questo non dovrei vendicarmi?".	8 For these things, says the LORD, shall I not punish them? On a nation such as this shall I not take vengeance?
9 Sui monti alzerò gemiti e lamenti, un pianto di lutto sui pascoli della steppa, perché sono riarsi, nessuno più vi passa, né più si ode il grido del bestiame. Dagli uccelli dell'aria alle bestie tutti sono fuggiti, scomparsi.	9 Over the mountains, break out in cries of lamentation, over the pasture lands, intone a dirge: They are scorched, and no man crosses them, unheard is the bleat of the flock; Birds of the air as well as beasts, all have fled, and are gone.
10 "Ridurrò Gerusalemme un cumulo di rovine, rifugio di sciacalli; le città di Giuda ridurrò alla desolazione, senza abitanti".	10 I will turn Jerusalem into a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals; The cities of Judah I will make into a waste, where no one dwells.
11 Chi è tanto saggio da comprendere questo? A chi la bocca del Signore ha parlato perché lo annunzi? Perché il paese è devastato, desolato come un deserto senza passanti?	11 Who is so wise that he can understand this? Let him to whom the mouth of the LORD has spoken make it known: Why is the land ravaged, scorched like a wasteland untraversed?
12 Ha detto il Signore: "È perché hanno abbandonato la legge che avevo loro posto innanzi e non hanno ascoltato la mia voce e non l'hanno seguita,	12 The LORD answered: Because they have abandoned my law, which I set before them, and have not followed it or listened to my voice,
13 ma han seguito la caparbietà del loro cuore e i Baal, che i loro padri avevano fatto loro conoscere".	13 but followed rather the hardness of their hearts and the Baals, as their fathers had taught them;
14 Pertanto così dice il Signore degli eserciti, Dio di Israele: "Ecco, darò loro in cibo assenzio, farò loro bere acque avvelenate;	14 therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: See now, I will give them wormwood to eat and poison to drink.
15 li disperderò in mezzo a popoli che né loro né i loro padri hanno conosciuto e manderò dietro a loro la spada finché non li abbia sterminati". Così dice il Signore degli eserciti:	15 I will scatter them among nations whom neither they nor their fathers have known; I will send the sword to pursue them until I have completely destroyed them.
16 Attenti, chiamate le lamentatrici, che vengano! Fate venire le più brave! Accorrano	16 Thus says the LORD of hosts: Attention! tell the wailing women to come, summon the best of them;
17 e facciano presto, per intonare su di noi un lamento. Sgorghino lacrime dai nostri occhi, il pianto scorra dalle nostre ciglia,	17 Let them come quickly and intone a dirge for us, That our eyes may be wet with weeping, our cheeks run with tears.
18 perché una voce di lamento si ode da Sion: "Come siamo rovinati, come profondamente confusi, poiché dobbiamo abbandonare il paese, lasciare le nostre abitazioni".	18 The dirge is heard from Zion: Ruined we are, and greatly ashamed; We must leave the land, give up our homes!
19 Udite, dunque, o donne, la parola del Signore; i vostri orecchi accolgano la parola della sua bocca. Insegnate alle vostre figlie il lamento, l'una all'altra un canto di lutto:	19 Hear, you women, the word of the LORD, let your ears receive his message. Teach your daughters this dirge, and each other this lament.
20 "La morte è entrata per le nostre finestre, si è introdotta nei nostri palazzi, abbattendo i fanciulli nella via e i giovani nelle piazze.	20 Death has come up through our windows, has entered our palaces; It cuts down the children in the street, young people in the squares.
21 I cadaveri degli uomini giacciono - dice il Signore - come letame sui campi, come covoni dietro il mietitore e nessuno li raccoglie".	21 The corpses of the slain lie like dung on a field, Like sheaves behind the harvester, with no one to gather them.
22 Così dice il Signore: "Non si vanti il saggio della sua saggezza e non si vanti il forte della sua forza, non si vanti il ricco delle sue ricchezze.	22 Thus says the LORD: Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, nor the strong man glory in his strength, nor the rich man glory in his riches;
23 Ma chi vuol gloriarsi si vanti di questo, di avere senno e di conoscere me, perché io sono il Signore che agisce con misericordia, con diritto e con giustizia sulla terra; di queste cose mi compiaccio". Parola del Signore.	23 But rather, let him who glories, glory in this, that in his prudence he knows me, Knows that I, the LORD, bring about kindness, justice and uprightness on the earth; For with such am I pleased, says the LORD.
24 "Ecco, giorni verranno - oracolo del Signore - nei quali punirò tutti i circoncisi che rimangono non circoncisi:	24 See, days are coming, says the LORD, when I will demand an account of all those circumcised in their flesh:
25 l'Egitto, Giuda, Edom, gli Ammoniti e i Moabiti e tutti coloro che si tagliano i capelli alle estremità delle tempie, i quali abitano nel deserto, perché tutte queste nazioni e tutta la casa di Israele sono incirconcisi nel cuore".	25 Egypt and Judah, Edom and the Ammonites, Moab and the desert dwellers who shave their temples. For all these nations, like the whole house of Israel, are uncircumcised in heart.
