SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Assim como a neve é imprópria no estio e a chuva na ceifa, do mesmo modo não convém ao insensato a consideração.	1 Snow no more befits the summer, nor rain the harvest-time, than honours befit a fool.
2 Como um pássaro que foge, uma andorinha que voa: uma maldição injustificada permanece sem efeito.	2 As the sparrow escapes, and the swal ow flies away, so the undeserved curse will never hit its mark.
3 O açoite para o cavalo, o freio para o asno: a vara para as costas do tolo.	3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and for the backs of fools, a stick.
4 Não respondas ao néscio segundo sua insensatez, para não seres semelhante a ele.	4 Do not answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear you grow like him yourself.
5 Responde ao tolo segundo sua loucura para que ele não se julgue sábio aos seus olhos.	5 Answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear he imagine himself wise.
6 Corta os pés, bebe aflições quem confia uma mensagem a um tolo.	6 He wounds himself, he takes violence for his drink, who sends a message by a fool.
7 As pernas de um coxo não têm força: do mesmo modo uma sentença na boca de um tolo.	7 Unreliable as the legs of the lame, so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
8 É colocar pedra na funda cumprimentar um tolo.	8 As wel tie the stone to the sling as pay honour to a fool.
9 Um espinho que cai na mão de um embriagado: tal é uma sentença na boca dos insensatos.	9 A thorn branch in a drunkard's hand, such is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10 Um arqueiro que fere a todos: tal é aquele que emprega um tolo ou um embriagado.	10 An archer wounding everyone, such is he who hires the passing fool and drunkard.
11 Um cão que volta ao seu vômito: tal é o louco que reitera suas loucuras.	11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool reverts to his fol y.
12 Tu tens visto um homem que se julga sábio? Há mais a esperar de um tolo do que dele.	12 You see someone who thinks himself wise? More to be hoped for from a fool than from him!
13 Há um leão no caminho, diz o preguiçoso, um leão na estrada!	13 'A wild beast on the road!' says the idler, 'a lion in the streets!'
14 A porta gira sobre seus gonzos: assim o preguiçoso no seu leito.	14 The door turns on its hinges, the idler on his bed.
15 O preguiçoso põe sua mão no prato e custa-lhe muito levá-la à boca.	15 Into the dish the idler dips his hand, but is too tired to bring it back to his mouth.
16 O preguiçoso julga-se mais sábio do que sete homens que respondem com prudência.	16 The idler thinks himself wiser than seven people who answer with discretion.
17 É pegar pelas orelhas um cão que passa envolver-se num debate que não interessa.	17 He takes a stray dog by the ears, who meddles in someone else's quarrel.
18 Um louco furioso que lança chamas, flechas e morte:	18 Like a madman hurling firebrands, arrows and death,
19 tal é o homem que engana seu próximo e diz em seguida: mas, era para brincar.	19 so is anyone who lies to a companion and then says, 'Aren't I amusing?'
20 Sem lenha o fogo se apaga: desaparecido o relator, acaba-se a questão.	20 No wood, and the fire goes out; no slanderer, and quarrel ing dies down.
21 Carvão sobre a brasa, lenha sobre o fogo: tal é um intrigante para atiçar uma disputa.	21 Charcoal for live embers, wood for fire, and the quarrelsome for kindling strife.
22 As palavras do mexeriqueiro são como guloseimas: penetram até o fundo das entranhas.	22 The words of a slanderer are tasty morsels that go right down into the bel y.
23 Uma liga de prata sobre o pote de argila: tais são as palavras ardentes com um coração malévolo.	23 Base silver-plate on top of clay: such are fervent lips and a wicked heart.
24 O que odeia, fala com dissimulação; no seu interior maquina a fraude;	24 Whoever hates may hide it in speech, but deep within lies treachery;
25 quando ele falar com amabilidade, não te fies nele porque há sete abominações em seu coração;	25 do not trust such a person's pretty speeches, since in the heart lurk seven abominations.
26 pode dissimular seu ódio sob aparências, e sua malícia acabará por ser revelada ao público.	26 Hatred may disguise itself with guile, to reveal its wickedness later in the assembly.
27 Quem cava uma fossa, ali cai; quem rola uma pedra, cairá debaixo dela.	27 Whoever digs a pit fal s into it, the stone comes back on him that rol s it.
28 A língua mendaz odeia aqueles que ela atinge, a boca enganosa conduz à ruína.	28 The lying tongue hates its victims, the wheedling mouth causes ruin.
