SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Provérbios de Salomão, filho de Davi, rei de Israel,	1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 para conhecer a sabedoria e a instrução, para compreender as palavras sensatas,	2 for learning what wisdom and discipline are, for understanding words of deep meaning,
3 para adquirir as lições do bom senso, da justiça, da eqüidade e da retidão;	3 for acquiring a disciplined insight, uprightness, justice and fair dealing;
4 para dar aos simples o discernimento, ao adolescente a ciência e a reflexão.	4 for teaching sound judgement to the simple, and knowledge and reflection to the young;
5 Que o sábio escute, e aumentará seu saber, e o homem inteligente adquirirá prudência	5 Let the wise listen and learn yet more, and a person of discernment wil acquire the art of guidance.
6 para compreender os provérbios, as alegorias, as máximas dos sábios e seus enigmas.	6 for perceiving the meaning of proverbs and obscure sayings, the sayings of the sages and their riddles.
7 O temor do Senhor é o princípio da sabedoria. Os insensatos desprezam a sabedoria e a instrução.	7 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; fools spurn wisdom and discipline.
8 Ouve, meu filho, a instrução de teu pai: não desprezes o ensinamento de tua mãe.	8 Listen, my child, to your father's instruction, do not reject your mother's teaching:
9 Isto será, pois, um diadema de graça para tua cabeça e um colar para teu pescoço.	9 they wil be a crown of grace for your head, a circlet for your neck.
10 Meu filho, se pecadores te quiserem seduzir, não consintas;	10 My child, if sinners try to seduce you, do not go with them.
11 se te disserem: Vem conosco, faremos emboscadas, para {derramar} sangue, armaremos ciladas ao inocente, sem motivo,	11 If they say, 'Come with us: let us lie in ambush to shed blood; if we plan an ambush for the innocentwithout provocation,
12 como a região dos mortos devoremo-lo vivo, inteiro, como aquele que desce à cova.	12 we can swal ow them alive, like Sheol, and whole, like those who sink into oblivion.
13 Nós acharemos toda a sorte de coisas preciosas, nós encheremos nossas casas de despojos.	13 We shal find treasures of every sort, we shall fil our houses with plunder;
14 Tu desfrutarás tua parte conosco, uma só será a bolsa comum de todos nós!	14 throw in your lot with us: one purse between us al .'
15 Oh, não andes com eles, afasta teus passos de suas sendas,	15 My child, do not fol ow them in their way, keep your steps out of their path
16 porque seus passos se dirigem para o mal, e se apressam a derramar sangue.	16 for their feet hasten to evil, they are quick to shed blood;
17 Debalde se lança a rede diante daquele que tem asas.	17 for the net is spread in vain if any winged creature can see it.
18 Eles mesmos armam emboscadas contra seu próprio sangue e se enganam a si mesmos.	18 It is for their own blood such people lie in wait, their ambush is against their own selves!
19 Tal é a sorte de todo homem ávido de riqueza: arrebata a vida àquele que a detém.	19 Such are the paths of al who seek dishonest gain: which robs of their lives al who take it for their own.
20 A Sabedoria clama nas ruas, eleva sua voz na praça,	20 Wisdom cal s aloud in the streets, she raises her voice in the public squares;
21 clama nas esquinas da encruzilhada, à entrada das portas da cidade ela faz ouvir sua voz: e até quando os que zombam se comprazerão na zombaria?	21 she cal s out at the street corners, she delivers her message at the city gates.
22 Até quando, insensatos, amareis a tolice, e os tolos odiarão a ciência?	22 'You simple people, how much longer will you cling to your simple ways? How much longer willmockers revel in their mocking and fools go on hating knowledge?
23 Convertei-vos às minhas admoestações, espalharei sobre vós o meu espírito, ensinar-vos-ei minhas palavras.	23 Pay attention to my warning. To you I wil pour out my heart and tel you what I have to say.
24 Uma vez que recusastes o meu chamado e ninguém prestou atenção quando estendi a mão,	24 Since I have cal ed and you have refused me, since I have beckoned and no one has taken notice,
25 uma vez que negligenciastes todos os meus conselhos e não destes ouvidos às minhas admoestações,	25 since you have ignored al my advice and rejected al my warnings,
26 também eu me rirei do vosso infortúnio e zombarei, quando vos sobrevier um terror,	26 I, for my part, shall laugh at your distress, I shal jeer when terror befal s you,
27 quando vier sobre vós um pânico, como furacão; quando se abater sobre vós a calamidade, como a tempestade; e quando caírem sobre vós tribulação e angústia.	27 when terror befal s you, like a storm, when your distress arrives, like a whirlwind, when ordeal andanguish bear down on you.
28 Então me chamarão, mas não responderei; procurar-me-ão, mas não atenderei.	28 Then they will cal me, but I shal not answer, they wil look eagerly for me and will not find me.
29 Porque detestam a ciência sem lhe antepor o temor do Senhor,	29 They have hated knowledge, they have not chosen the fear of Yahweh,
30 porque repelem meus conselhos com desprezo às minhas exortações;	30 they have taken no notice of my advice, they have spurned al my warnings:
31 comerão do fruto dos seus erros e se saciarão com seus planos,	31 so they wil have to eat the fruits of their own ways of life, and choke themselves with their ownscheming.
32 porque a apostasia dos tolos os mata e o desleixo dos insensatos os perde.	32 For the errors of the simple lead to their death, the complacency of fools works their own ruin;
33 Aquele que me escuta, porém, habitará com segurança, viverá tranqüilo, sem recear dano algum.	33 but whoever listens to me may live secure, will have quiet, fearing no mischance.'
