Lettera agli Efesini 5

1 Fatevi dunque imitatori di Dio, quali figli carissimi,	1 As God's dear children, then, take him as your pattern,
2 e camminate nella carità, nel modo che anche Cristo vi ha amato e ha dato se stesso per noi, offrendosi a Dio in sacrificio di soave odore.	2 and fol ow Christ by loving as he loved you, giving himself up for us as an offering and a sweet-smel ingsacrifice to God.
3 Quanto alla fornicazione e a ogni specie di impurità o cupidigia, neppure se ne parli tra voi, come si addice a santi;	3 Among you there must be not even a mention of sexual vice or impurity in any of its forms, or greed:this would scarcely become the holy people of God!
4 lo stesso si dica per le volgarità, insulsaggini, trivialità: cose tutte sconvenienti. Si rendano invece azioni di grazie!	4 There must be no foul or salacious talk or coarse jokes -- al this is wrong for you; there should ratherbe thanksgiving.
5 Perché, sappiatelo bene, nessun fornicatore, o impuro, o avaro - che è roba da idolàtri - avrà parte al regno di Cristo e di Dio.	5 For you can be quite certain that nobody who indulges in sexual immorality or impurity or greed -- whichis worshipping a false god -- can inherit the kingdom of God.
6 Nessuno vi inganni con vani ragionamenti: per queste cose infatti piomba l'ira di Dio sopra coloro che gli resistono.	6 Do not let anyone deceive you with empty arguments: it is such behaviour that draws down God'sretribution on those who rebel against him.
7 Non abbiate quindi niente in comune con loro.	7 Make sure that you do not throw in your lot with them.
8 Se un tempo eravate tenebra, ora siete luce nel Signore. Comportatevi perciò come i figli della luce;	8 You were darkness once, but now you are light in the Lord; behave as children of light,
9 il frutto della luce consiste in ogni bontà, giustizia e verità.	9 for the effects of the light are seen in complete goodness and uprightness and truth.
10 Cercate ciò che è gradito al Signore,	10 Try to discover what the Lord wants of you,
11 e non partecipate alle opere infruttuose delle tenebre, ma piuttosto condannatele apertamente,	11 take no part in the futile works of darkness but, on the contrary, show them up for what they are.
12 poiché di quanto viene fatto da costoro in segreto è vergognoso perfino parlare.	12 The things which are done in secret are shameful even to speak of;
13 Tutte queste cose che vengono apertamente condannate sono rivelate dalla luce, perché tutto quello che si manifesta è luce.	13 but anything shown up by the light wil be il uminated
14 Per questo sta scritto: "Svégliati, o tu che dormi, déstati dai morti e Cristo ti illuminerà".	14 and anything illuminated is itself a light. That is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead,and Christ wil shine on you.
15 Vigilate dunque attentamente sulla vostra condotta, comportandovi non da stolti, ma da uomini saggi;	15 So be very careful about the sort of lives you lead, like intel igent and not like senseless people.
16 profittando del tempo presente, perché i giorni sono cattivi.	16 Make the best of the present time, for it is a wicked age.
17 Non siate perciò inconsiderati, ma sappiate comprendere la volontà di Dio.	17 This is why you must not be thoughtless but must recognise what is the will of the Lord.
18 E non ubriacatevi di vino, il quale porta alla sfrenatezza, ma siate ricolmi dello Spirito,	18 Do not get drunk with wine; this is simply dissipation; be fil ed with the Spirit.
19 intrattenendovi a vicenda con salmi, inni, cantici spirituali, cantando e inneggiando al Signore con tutto il vostro cuore,	19 Sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs among yourselves, singing and chanting to the Lord inyour hearts,
20 rendendo continuamente grazie per ogni cosa a Dio Padre, nel nome del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo.	20 always and everywhere giving thanks to God who is our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
21 Siate sottomessi gli uni agli altri nel timore di Cristo.	21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.
22 Le mogli siano sottomesse ai mariti come al Signore;	22 Wives should be subject to their husbands as to the Lord,
23 il marito infatti è capo della moglie, come anche Cristo è capo della Chiesa, lui che è il salvatore del suo corpo.	23 since, as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife;
24 E come la Chiesa sta sottomessa a Cristo, così anche le mogli siano soggette ai loro mariti in tutto.	24 and as the Church is subject to Christ, so should wives be to their husbands, in everything.
25 E voi, mariti, amate le vostre mogli, come Cristo ha amato la Chiesa e ha dato se stesso per lei,	25 Husbands should love their wives, just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her
26 per renderla santa, purificandola per mezzo del lavacro dell'acqua accompagnato dalla parola,	26 to make her holy by washing her in cleansing water with a form of words,
27 al fine di farsi comparire davanti la sua Chiesa tutta gloriosa, senza macchia né ruga o alcunché di simile, ma santa e immacolata.	27 so that when he took the Church to himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless.
28 Così anche i mariti hanno il dovere di amare le mogli come il proprio corpo, perché chi ama la propria moglie ama se stesso.	28 In the same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies; for a man to love hiswife is for him to love himself.
29 Nessuno mai infatti ha preso in odio la propria carne; al contrario la nutre e la cura, come fa Cristo con la Chiesa,	29 A man never hates his own body, but he feeds it and looks after it; and that is the way Christ treats theChurch,
30 poiché siamo membra del suo corpo.	30 because we are parts of his Body.
31 'Per questo l'uomo lascerà suo padre e sua madre e si unirà alla sua donna e i due formeranno una carne sola'.	31 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the twobecome one flesh.
32 Questo mistero è grande; lo dico in riferimento a Cristo e alla Chiesa!	32 This mystery has great significance, but I am applying it to Christ and the Church.
33 Quindi anche voi, ciascuno da parte sua, ami la propria moglie come se stesso, e la donna sia rispettosa verso il marito.	33 To sum up: you also, each one of you, must love his wife as he loves himself; and let every wiferespect her husband.
