1 Sugli empi si riversò sino alla fine uno sdegno implacabile, perché Dio prevedeva anche il loro futuro,	1 But the godless were assailed by merciless anger to the very end, for he knew beforehand what theywould do,
2 che cioè, dopo aver loro permesso di andarsene e averli fatti in fretta partire, cambiato proposito, li avrebbero inseguiti.	2 how, after letting his people leave and hastening their departure, they would change their minds andgive chase.
3 Mentre infatti erano ancora occupati nei lutti e piangevano sulle tombe dei morti, presero un'altra decisione insensata, e inseguirono come fuggitivi coloro che già avevan pregato di partire.	3 They were actual y stil conducting their mourning rites and lamenting at the tombs of their dead, whenanother mad scheme came into their heads and they set out to pursue, as though runaways, the people whomthey had expel ed and begged to go.
4 Li spingeva a questo punto estremo un meritato destino, che li gettò nell'oblio delle cose avvenute, perché colmassero la punizione, che ancora mancava ai loro tormenti,	4 A wel -deserved fate urged them to this extreme and made them forget what had already happened,so that they would add to their torments the one punishment outstanding
5 e mentre il tuo popolo intraprendeva un viaggio straordinario, essi incorressero in una morte singolare.	5 and, while your people were experiencing a journey contrary to al expectations, would themselvesmeet an extraordinary death.
6 Tutta la creazione assumeva da capo, nel suo genere, nuova forma, obbedendo ai tuoi comandi, perché i tuoi figli fossero preservati sani e salvi.	6 For the whole creation, submissive to your commands, had its very nature re-created, so that yourchildren should be preserved from harm.
7 Si vide la nube coprire d'ombra l'accampamento, terra asciutta apparire dove prima c'era acqua, una strada libera aprirsi nel Mar Rosso e una verdeggiante pianura in luogo dei flutti violenti;	7 Overshadowing the camp there was the cloud; where there had been water, dry land was seen to rise;the Red Sea became an unimpeded way, the tempestuous waves, a green plain;
8 per essa passò tutto il tuo popolo, i protetti della tua mano, spettatori di prodigi stupendi.	8 sheltered by your hand, the whole nation passed across, gazing at these amazing prodigies.
9 Come cavalli alla pastura, come agnelli esultanti, cantavano inni a te, Signore, che li avevi liberati.	9 They were like horses at pasture, they skipped like lambs, singing your praises, Lord, their deliverer.
10 Ricordavano ancora i fatti del loro esilio, come la terra, invece di bestiame, produsse zanzare, come il fiume, invece di pesci, riversò una massa di rane.	10 For they stil remembered the events of their exile, how the land had bred mosquitoes instead ofanimals and the River had disgorged mil ions of frogs instead of fish.
11 Più tardi videro anche una nuova produzione di uccelli, quando, spinti dall'appetito, chiesero cibi delicati;	11 Later they were to see a new way for birds to come into being, when, goaded by greed, theydemanded something tasty,
12 poiché, per appagarli, salirono dal mare le quaglie.	12 and quails came up out of the sea to satisfy them.
13 Sui peccatori invece caddero i castighi non senza segni premonitori di fulmini fragorosi; essi soffrirono giustamente per la loro malvagità, avendo nutrito un odio tanto profondo verso lo straniero.	13 On the sinners, however, punishments rained down not without violent thunder as early warning; andthey suffered what their own crimes had justly deserved since they had shown such bitter hatred to foreigners.
14 Altri non accolsero ospiti sconosciuti; ma costoro ridussero schiavi ospiti benemeriti.	14 Others, indeed, had failed to welcome strangers who came to them, but the Egyptians had enslavedtheir own guests and benefactors.
15 Non solo: ci sarà per i primi un giudizio, perché accolsero ostilmente dei forestieri;	15 The sinners, moreover, will certainly be punished for it, since they gave the foreigners a hostilewelcome;
16 ma quelli, dopo averli festosamente accolti, poi, quando già partecipavano ai loro diritti li oppressero con lavori durissimi.	16 but the latter, having given a festive reception to people who already shared the same rights asthemselves, later overwhelmed them with terrible labours.
17 Furono perciò colpiti da cecità, come lo furono i primi alla porta del giusto, quando avvolti fra tenebre fitte ognuno cercava l'ingresso della propria porta.	17 Hence they were struck with blindness, like the sinners at the gate of the upright, when, yawningdarkness all around them, each had to grope his way through his own door.
18 Difatti gli elementi scambiavano ordine fra loro, come le note di un'arpa variano la specie del ritmo, pur conservando sempre lo stesso tono. E proprio questo si può dedurre dalla attenta considerazione degli avvenimenti:	18 A new attuning of the elements occurred, as on a harp the notes may change their rhythm, though althe while preserving the same tone; and this is just what happened:
19 animali terrestri divennero acquatici, quelli che nuotavano passarono sulla terra.	19 land animals became aquatic, swimming ones took to the land,
20 Il fuoco rafforzò nell'acqua la sua potenza e l'acqua dimenticò la sua proprietà naturale di spegnere.	20 fire reinforced its strength in water, and water forgot the power of extinguishing it;
21 Le fiamme non consumavano le carni di animali gracili, che vi camminavano dentro, né scioglievano quella specie di cibo celeste, simile alla brina e così facile a fondersi.	21 flames, on the other hand, did not char the flesh of delicate animals that ventured into them; nor didthey melt the heavenly food resembling ice and as easily melted.
22 In tutti i modi, o Signore, hai magnificato e reso glorioso il tuo popolo e non l'hai trascurato assistendolo in ogni tempo e in ogni luogo.	22 Yes, Lord, in every way you have made your people great and glorious; you have never failed to helpthem at any time or place.
