Livre des Proverbes 31

1 Paroles de Lemuel, roi de Massa, que sa mère lui apprit.	1 The words of king Lamuel. The vision wherewith his mother instructed him.
2 Quoi, mon fils! quoi, fils de mes entrailles! quoi, fils de mes voeux!	2 What, O my beloved, what, O the beloved of my womb, what, O the beloved of my vows?
3 Ne livre pas ta vigueur aux femmes, ni tes voies à celles qui perdent les rois.	3 Give not thy substance to women, and thy riches to destroy kings.
4 Il ne convient pas aux rois, Lemuel, il ne convient pas aux rois de boire du vin, ni aux princesd'aimer la boisson,	4 Give not to kings, O Lamuel, give not wine to kings: because there is no secret where drunkenness reigneth:
5 de crainte qu'en buvant ils n'oublient ce qui est décrété et qu'ils ne faussent la cause de tous lespauvres.	5 And lest they drink and forget judgments, and pervert the cause of the children of the poor.
6 Procure des boissons fortes à qui va mourir, du vin à qui est rempli d'amertume:	6 Give strong drink to them that are sad: and wine to them that are grieved in mind:
7 qu'il boive, qu'il oublie sa misère, qu'il ne se souvienne plus de son malheur!	7 Let them drink, and forget their want, and remember their sorrow no more.
8 Ouvre la bouche en faveur du muet, pour la cause de tous les abandonnés;	8 Open thy mouth for the dumb, and for the causes of all the children that pass.
9 ouvre la bouche, juge avec justice, défends la cause du pauvre et du malheureux.	9 Open thy mouth, decree that which is just, and do justice to the needy and poor.
10 Une maîtresse femme, qui la trouvera? Elle a bien plus de prix que les perles!	10 Who shall find a valiant woman? far and from the uttermost coasts is the price of her.
11 En elle se confie le coeur de son mari, il ne manque pas d'en tirer profit.	11 The heart of her husband trusteth in her, and he shall have no need of spoils.
12 Elle fait son bonheur et non son malheur, tous les jours de sa vie.	12 She will render him good, and not evil, all the days of her life.
13 Elle cherche laine et lin et travaille d'une main allègre.	13 She hath sought wool and flax, and hath wrought by the counsel of her hands.
14 Elle est pareille à des vaisseaux marchands: de loin, elle amène ses vivres.	14 She is like the merchant's ship, she bringeth her bread from afar.
15 Il fait encore nuit qu'elle se lève, distribuant à sa maisonnée la pitance, et des ordres à sesservantes.	15 And she hath risen in the night, and given a prey to her household, and victuals to her maidens.
16 A-t-elle en vue un champ, elle l'acquiert; du produit de ses mains, elle plante une vigne.	16 She hath considered a field, and bought it: with the fruit of her hands she hath planted a vineyard.
17 Elle ceint vigoureusement ses reins et déploie la force de ses bras.	17 She hath girded her loins with strength, and hath strengthened her arm.
18 Elle sait que ses affaires vont bien, de la nuit, sa lampe ne s'éteint.	18 She hath tasted and seen that her traffic is good: her lamp shall not be put out in the night.
19 Elle met la main à la quenouille, ses doigts prennent le fuseau.	19 She hath put out her hand to strong things, and her fingers have taken hold of the spindle.
20 Elle étend les mains vers le pauvre, elle tend les bras aux malheureux.	20 She hath opened her hand to the needy, and stretched out her hands to the poor.
21 Elle ne redoute pas la neige pour sa maison, car toute sa maisonnée porte double vêtement.	21 She shall not fear for her house in the cold of snow: for dl her domestics are clothed with double garments.
22 Elle se fait des couvertures, de lin et de pourpre est son vêtement.	22 She hath made for herself clothing of tapestry: fine linen, and purple is her covering.
23 Aux portes de la ville, son mari est connu, il siège parmi les anciens du pays.	23 Her husband is honourable in the gates, when he sitteth among the senators of the land.
24 Elle tisse des étoffes et les vend, au marchand elle livre une ceinture.	24 She made fine linen, and sold it, end delivered a girdle to the Chanaanite.
25 Force et dignité forment son vêtement, elle rit au jour à venir.	25 Strength and beauty are her clothing, and she shall laugh in the latter day.
26 Avec sagesse elle ouvre la bouche, sur sa langue: une doctrine de piété.	26 She hath opened her mouth to wisdom, and the law of clemency is on her tongue.
27 De sa maisonnée, elle surveille le va-et-vient, elle ne mange pas le pain de l'oisiveté.	27 She hath looked well to the paths of her house, and hath not eaten her bread idle.
28 Ses fils se lèvent pour la proclamer bienheureuse, son mari, pour faire son éloge:	28 Her children rose up, and called her blessed: her husband, and he praised her.
29 "Nombre de femmes ont accompli des exploits, mais toi, tu les surpasses toutes!"	29 Many daughters have gathered together riches: thou hast surpassed them all.
30 Tromperie que la grâce! Vanité, la beauté! La femme qui craint Yahvé, voilà celle qu'il fautféliciter!	30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: the woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
31 Accordez-lui une part du produit de ses mains, et qu'aux portes ses oeuvres fassent son éloge!	31 Give her of the fruit of her hands: and let her works praise her in the gates.
