1 Jesus had now finished al he wanted to say, and he told his disciples,	1 Quando Jesus acabou todos esses discursos, disse a seus discípulos:
2 'It wil be Passover, as you know, in two days' time, and the Son of man wil be handed over to becrucified.'	2 “Sabeis que daqui a dois dias será a Páscoa, e o Filho do Homem será traído para ser crucificado”.
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whosename was Caiaphas,	3 Então, os príncipes dos sacer­dotes e os anciãos do povo reuniram-se no pátio do sumo sacerdote, chamado Caifás,
4 and made plans to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.	4 e deliberaram sobre os meios de prender Jesus por astúcia e de o matar.
5 They said, however, 'It must not be during the festivities; there must be no disturbance among thepeople.'	5 E dizi­am: “Sobretudo, não seja durante a festa. Poderá haver um tumulto entre o povo”.
6 Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease,when	6 Encontrava-se Jesus em Betânia, na casa de Simão, o leproso.
7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and poured it on his head ashe was at table.	7 Estando à mesa, aproximou-se dele uma mulher com um vaso de alabastro, cheio de perfume muito caro, e derramou-o na sua cabeça.
8 When they saw this, the disciples said indignantly, 'Why this waste?	8 Vendo isso, os discípulos disseram indignados: “Para que este desperdício?
9 This could have been sold for a high price and the money given the poor.'	9 Poderia vender este perfume por um bom preço e dar o dinheiro aos pobres”.
10 But Jesus noticed this and said, 'Why are you upsetting the woman? What she has done for me isindeed a good work!	10 Jesus ouviu-os e disse-lhes: “Por que molestais esta mulher? É uma ação boa o que ela me fez.
11 You have the poor with you always, but you wil not always have me.	11 Pobres vós tereis sempre convosco. A mim, porém, nem sempre me tereis.
12 When she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.	12 Derramando esse perfume em meu corpo, ela o fez em vista da minha sepultura.
13 In truth I tel you, wherever in al the world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be toldas well, in remembrance of her.'	13 Em verdade eu vos digo: em toda parte onde for pregado este Evangelho pelo mundo inteiro, será contado em sua memória o que ela fez”.
14 Then one of the Twelve, the man cal ed Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests	14 Então, um dos Doze, chamado Judas Iscariotes, foi ter com os príncipes dos sacerdotes e perguntou-lhes:
15 and said, 'What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?' They paid him thirty silverpieces,	15 “Que quereis dar-me e eu vo-lo entregarei”. Ajustaram com ele trinta moedas de prata.
16 and from then onwards he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.	16 E desde aquele instante, procurava uma ocasião favorável para entregar Jesus.
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, 'Where do you want usto make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'	17 No primeiro dia dos ázimos, os discípulos aproximaram-se de Jesus e perguntaram-lhe: “Onde queres que preparemos a ceia pascal?”.
18 He said, 'Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, "The Master says: My time is near. It is atyour house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples." '	18 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: “Ide à cidade, à casa de um tal, e dizei-lhe: O Mestre manda dizer-te: Meu tempo está próximo. É em tua casa que celebrarei a Páscoa com meus discípulos”.
19 The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.	19 Os discípulos fizeram o que Jesus tinha ordenado e prepararam a Páscoa.
20 When evening came he was at table with the Twelve.	20 Ao declinar da tarde, pôs-se Jesus à mesa com os doze discípulos.
21 And while they were eating he said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me.'	21 Durante a ceia, disse: “Em verdade vos digo: um de vós me há de trair”.
22 They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, 'Not me, Lord, surely?'	22 Com profunda aflição, cada um começou a perguntar: “Sou eu, Senhor?”.
23 He answered, 'Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me wil betray me.	23 Respondeu ele: “Aquele que pôs comigo a mão no prato, esse me trairá.
24 The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom theSon of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!'	24 O Filho do Homem vai, como dele está escrito. Mas ai daquele homem por quem o Filho do Homem é traído! Seria melhor para esse homem que jamais tivesse nascido!”.
25 Judas, who was to betray him, asked in his turn, 'Not me, Rabbi, surely?' Jesus answered, 'It is youwho say it.'	25 Judas, o traidor, tomou a palavra e perguntou: “Mestre, serei eu?”. “Sim” – disse Jesus.
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gaveit to the disciples. 'Take it and eat,' he said, 'this is my body.'	26 Durante a refeição, Jesus tomou o pão, benzeu-o, partiu-o e o deu aos discípulos, dizendo: “Tomai e comei, isto é meu corpo”.
27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them saying, 'Drink from this, allof you,	27 Tomou depois o cálice, rendeu graças e deu-lho, dizendo: “Bebei dele todos,
28 for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.	28 porque isto é meu sangue, o sangue da Nova Aliança, derramado por muitos homens em remissão dos pecados.
29 From now on, I tel you, I shal never again drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you inthe kingdom of my Father.'	29 Digo-vos: doravante não beberei mais desse fruto da vinha até o dia em que o beberei de novo convosco no Reino de meu Pai”.
30 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.	30 Depois do canto dos Salmos, dirigiram-se eles para o monte das Oliveiras.
31 Then Jesus said to them, 'You wil al fall away from me tonight, for the scripture says: I shal strikethe shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered,	31 Disse-lhes então Jesus: “Esta noite serei para todos vós uma ocasião de queda; porque está escrito: Ferirei o pastor, e as ovelhas do rebanho serão dispersadas ( Zc 13,7 ).
32 but after my resurrection I shal go ahead of you to Galilee.'	32 Mas, depois da minha Ressurreição, eu vos precederei na Galileia”.
33 At this, Peter said to him, 'Even if al fal away from you, I wil never fal away.'	33 Pedro interveio: “Mesmo que sejas para todos uma ocasião de queda, para mim jamais o serás”.
34 Jesus answered him, 'In truth I tel you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disownedme three times.'	34 Disse-lhe Jesus: “Em verdade te digo: nesta noite mesma, antes que o galo cante, três vezes me negarás”.
35 Peter said to him, 'Even if I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And al the disciples saidthe same.	35 Respondeu-lhe Pedro: “Mesmo que seja necessário morrer contigo, jamais te negarei!”. E todos os outros discípulos diziam-lhe o mesmo.
36 Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, 'Stayhere while I go over there to pray.'	36 Retirou-se Jesus com eles para um lugar chamado Getsêmani e disse-lhes: “Assentai-vos aqui, enquanto eu vou ali orar...
37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And he began to feel sadness and anguish.	37 E, tomando consigo Pedro e os dois filhos de Zebedeu, começou a entristecer-se e a angustiar-se.
38 Then he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me.'	38 Disse-lhes, então: “Minha alma está triste até a morte. Ficai aqui e vigiai comigo”.
39 And going on a little further he fel on his face and prayed. 'My Father,' he said, 'if it is possible, letthis cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.'	39 Adiantou-se um pouco e, prostrando-se com a face por terra, assim rezou: “Meu Pai, se é possível, afasta de mim este cálice! Todavia, não se faça o que eu quero, mas sim o que tu queres”.
40 He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'So you had not thestrength to stay awake with me for one hour?	40 Foi ter então com os discípulos e os encontrou dormindo. E disse a Pedro: “Então, não pudestes vigiar uma hora comigo...
41 Stay awake, and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing enough, but human nature isweak.'	41 Vigiai e orai para que não entreis em tentação. O espírito está pronto, mas a carne é fraca”.
42 Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: 'My Father,' he said, 'if this cup cannot pass by, butI must drink it, your wil be done!'	42 Afastou-se pela segunda vez e orou, dizendo: “Meu Pai, se não é possível que este cálice passe sem que eu o beba, faça-se a tua vontade!”
43 And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy.	43 Voltou ainda e os encontrou novamente dormindo, porque seus olhos estavam pesados.
44 Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words.	44 Deixou-os e foi orar pela terceira vez, dizendo as mesmas palavras.
45 Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest.Look, the hour has come when the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	45 Voltou, então, para os seus discípulos e disse-lhes: “Dormi agora e repousai! Chegou a hora: o Filho do Homem vai ser entregue nas mãos dos pecadores...
46 Get up! Let us go! Look, my betrayer is not far away.'	46 Levantai-vos, vamos! Aquele que me trai está perto daqui”.
47 And suddenly while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a largenumber of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.	47 Jesus ainda falava, quando veio Judas, um dos Doze, e com ele uma multidão de gente armada de espadas e cacetes, enviada pelos príncipes dos sacerdotes e pelos anciãos do povo.
48 Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him.'	48 O traidor combinara com eles este sinal: “Aquele que eu beijar, é ele. Prendei-o!”.
49 So he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi,' and kissed him.	49 Aproximou-se imediatamente de Jesus e disse: “Salve, Mestre”. E beijou-o.
50 Jesus said to him, 'My friend, do what you are here for.' Then they came forward, seized Jesus andarrested him.	50 Disse-lhe Jesus: “É, então, para isso que vens aqui?”. Em seguida, adiantaram-se eles e lançaram mão em Jesus para prendê-lo.
51 And suddenly, one of the fol owers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck the high priest'sservant and cut off his ear.	51 Mas um dos companheiros de Jesus desembainhou a espada e feriu um servo do sumo sacerdote, decepando-lhe a orelha.
52 Jesus then said, 'Put your sword back, for al who draw the sword wil die by the sword.	52 Jesus, no entanto, lhe dis­se: “Embainha tua espada, porque todos aqueles que usarem da espada, pela espada morrerão.
53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, who would promptly send more than twelvelegions of angels to my defence?	53 Crês tu que não posso invocar meu Pai e ele não me enviaria imediatamente mais de doze legiões de anjos?
54 But then, how would the scriptures be fulfil ed that say this is the way it must be?'	54 Mas como se cumpririam então as Escrituras, segundo as quais é preciso que seja assim?”.
55 It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out to capture mewith swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me.'	55 Depois, voltando-se para a turba, falou: “Saístes armados de espadas e porretes para prender-me, como se eu fosse um malfeitor. Entretanto, todos os dias estava eu sentado entre vós ensinando no templo e não me prendestes.
56 Now al this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then al the disciples deserted him and ranaway.	56 Mas tudo isto aconteceu porque era necessário que se cumprissem os oráculos dos profetas”. Então, os discípulos o abandonaram e fugiram.
57 The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where thescribes and the elders were assembled.	57 Os que haviam prendido Jesus levaram-no à casa do sumo sacerdote Caifás, onde estavam reu­nidos os escribas e os anciãos do povo.
58 Peter followed him at a distance right to the high priest's palace, and he went in and sat down withthe attendants to see what the end would be.	58 Pedro seguia-o de longe, até o pátio do sumo sacerdote. Entrou e sentou-se junto aos criados para ver como terminaria aquilo.
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false,on which they might have him executed.	59 Enquanto isso, os príncipes dos sacerdotes e todo o conselho procuravam um falso testemunho contra Jesus, a fim de o levarem à morte.
60 But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two cameforward	60 Mas não o conseguiram, embora se apresentassem muitas falsas testemunhas.
61 and made a statement, 'This man said, "I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three daysbuild it up." '	61 Por fim, apresentaram-se duas testemunhas, que disseram: “Este homem disse: Posso destruir o Templo de Deus e reedificá-lo em três dias”.
62 The high priest then rose and said to him, 'Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence thesemen are bringing against you?'	62 Levantou-se o sumo sacerdote e lhe perguntou: “Nada tens a responder ao que essa gente depõe contra ti?”.
63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, 'I put you on oath by the living God to tel us ifyou are the Christ, the Son of God.'	63 Jesus, no entanto, permanecia calado. Disse-lhe o sumo sacerdote: “Por Deus vivo, conjuro-te que nos digas se és o Cristo, o Filho de Deus?”.
64 Jesus answered him, 'It is you who say it. But, I tel you that from this time onward you wil see theSon of man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.'	64 Jesus respondeu: “Sim. Além disso, eu vos declaro que vereis doravante o Filho do Homem sentar-se à direita do Todo-poderoso, e voltar sobre as nuvens do céu”.
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, 'He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have wenow? There! You have just heard the blasphemy.	65 A essas palavras, o sumo sacerdote rasgou suas vestes, exclamando: “Que necessidade temos ainda de testemunhas? Acabastes de ouvir a blasfêmia!
66 What is your opinion?' They answered, 'He deserves to die.'	66 Qual o vosso parecer?”. Eles responderam: “Merece a morte!”.
67 Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him,	67 Cuspiram-lhe então na face, bateram-lhe com os punhos e deram-lhe tapas,
68 'Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you then?'	68 dizendo: “Adi­vinha, ó Cristo: quem te bateu?”. (= Mc 14,66-72 = Lc 22,55-62 = Jo 18,15-27 )
69 Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him saying, 'You,too, were with Jesus the Galilean.'	69 Enquanto isso, Pedro estava sentado no pátio. Aproximou-se dele uma das servas, dizendo: “Também tu estavas com Jesus, o Galileu”.
70 But he denied it in front of them al . 'I do not know what you are talking about,' he said.	70 Mas ele negou publicamente, nestes termos: “Não sei o que dizes”.
71 When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, 'Thisman was with Jesus the Nazarene.'	71 Dirigia-se ele para a porta, a fim de sair, quando outra criada o viu e disse aos que lá estavam: “Este homem também estava com Jesus de Nazaré”.
72 And again, with an oath, he denied it, 'I do not know the man.'	72 Pedro, pela segunda vez, negou com juramento: “Eu nem conheço tal homem”.
73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'You are certainly one of them too! Why, youraccent gives you away.'	73 Pouco depois, os que ali estavam aproximaram-se de Pedro e disseram: “Sim, tu és daqueles; teu modo de falar te dá a conhecer”.
74 Then he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man.' And at once the cock crowed,	74 Pedro, então, começou a fazer imprecações, jurando que nem sequer conhecia tal homem. E, neste momento, cantou o galo.
75 and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you wil have disowned methree times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly.	75 Pedro recordou-se do que Jesus lhe dissera: “Antes que o galo cante, tu me negarás três vezes”. E saindo, chorou amargamente.
