Matthew 26

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Jesus had now finished al he wanted to say, and he told his disciples,	1 - Gesù, terminati questi discorsi, disse a' suoi discepoli:
2 'It wil be Passover, as you know, in two days' time, and the Son of man wil be handed over to becrucified.'	2 «Voi sapete che tra due giorni è la Pasqua e il Figliuol dell'uomo sarà consegnato per essere crocifisso».
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whosename was Caiaphas,	3 Allora i principi dei Sacerdoti e gli anziani del popolo si riunirono nell'atrio del sommo sacerdote, detto Caifa
4 and made plans to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.	4 e fecero complotto per impadronirsi con inganno di Gesù e farlo morire.
5 They said, however, 'It must not be during the festivities; there must be no disturbance among thepeople.'	5 Ma dicevano: «Bisogna che ciò non accada durante la festa, perchè non nasca tumulto in mezzo al popolo».
6 Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease,when	6 Mentre Gesù si trovava a Betania, nella casa di Simone il lebbroso,
7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and poured it on his head ashe was at table.	7 gli s'accostò una donna con un vaso d'alabastro, colmo d'unguento prezioso e lo sparse sul capo di lui ch'era a tavola.
8 When they saw this, the disciples said indignantly, 'Why this waste?	8 I discepoli, visto ciò, furono indignati e dissero: «A che tale sciupio?
9 This could have been sold for a high price and the money given the poor.'	9 Quest'unguento si poteva venderlo caro e darne il ricavo ai poveri».
10 But Jesus noticed this and said, 'Why are you upsetting the woman? What she has done for me isindeed a good work!	10 Gesù, essendosene accorto, disse loro: «Perchè date noia a questa donna? Ella ha fatto una buona azione verso di me.
11 You have the poor with you always, but you wil not always have me.	11 Infatti voi avete sempre i poveri con voi, ma non sempre avete me.
12 When she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.	12 Costei, spargendo quest'unguento sul mio corpo, lo ha fatto per la mia sepoltura.
13 In truth I tel you, wherever in al the world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be toldas well, in remembrance of her.'	13 Io vi dico in verità che dovunque sarà predicato questo vangelo, sarà pur raccontato a sua memoria ciò ch'ella ha fatto».
14 Then one of the Twelve, the man cal ed Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests	14 Allora uno dei Dodici, detto Giuda Iscariote, andò dai principi de' Sacerdoti
15 and said, 'What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?' They paid him thirty silverpieces,	15 e chiese loro: «Che cosa siete disposti a darmi, e io ve lo consegno?». Ed essi gli fissarono trenta monete d'argento.
16 and from then onwards he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.	16 E da quel momento egli cercava l'occasione buona per tradirlo.
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, 'Where do you want usto make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'	17 Il primo giorno degli azzimi, i discepoli vennero a Gesù e gli domandarono: «Dove vuoi che ti prepariamo per mangiare la Pasqua?».
18 He said, 'Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, "The Master says: My time is near. It is atyour house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples." '	18 Gesù rispose: «Andate in città da un tale e ditegli: - Il Maestro dice: " Il mio tempo è vicino; io farò la Pasqua presso di te co' miei discepoli"-».
19 The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.	19 Ed essi fecero come Gesù aveva loro ordinato e prepararon la Pasqua.
20 When evening came he was at table with the Twelve.	20 Calata la sera, si mise a tavola coi Dodici.
21 And while they were eating he said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me.'	21 Mentre mangiavano disse: «In verità vi dico che uno di voi mi tradirà».
22 They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, 'Not me, Lord, surely?'	22 Essi, grandemente contristati, presero a dirgli l'un dopo l'altro: «Son forse io, o Signore?».
23 He answered, 'Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me wil betray me.	23 Egli rispose: «Colui che ha messo con me la mano nel piatto, quegli mi tradirà.
24 The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom theSon of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!'	24 Il Figliuol dell'uomo se ne va come sta scritto di lui, ma guai a quell'uomo per opera del quale il Figliuol dell'uomo è tradito. Sarebbe stato meglio per quest'uomo che non fosse mai nato».
25 Judas, who was to betray him, asked in his turn, 'Not me, Rabbi, surely?' Jesus answered, 'It is youwho say it.'	25 Giuda, il quale lo tradiva, prese la parola e disse: «Son forse io, Maestro?». E Gesù: «Tu l'hai detto».
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gaveit to the disciples. 'Take it and eat,' he said, 'this is my body.'	26 Or mentre mangiavano, Gesù prese del pane e, dopo averlo benedetto, lo spezzò e nel darlo ai suoi discepoli disse: «Prendete, mangiate; questo è il mio corpo».
27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them saying, 'Drink from this, allof you,	27 Poi, preso un calice e avendo reso grazie, lo diede loro dicendo: «Bevetene tutti:
28 for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.	28 perchè questo è il mio sangue della nuova alleanza, che sarà sparso per molti in remissione dei peccati.
29 From now on, I tel you, I shal never again drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you inthe kingdom of my Father.'	29 Io vi dico che d'ora in poi non berrò di questo frutto della vite fino al giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo con voi nel Regno del Padre mio».
30 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.	30 Recitato l'inno, usciron verso il monte degli Ulivi.
31 Then Jesus said to them, 'You wil al fall away from me tonight, for the scripture says: I shal strikethe shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered,	31 Allora Gesù disse loro: «Tutti voi, questa notte vi scandalizzerete di me; perchè sta scritto: " Percoterò il pastore, e le pecorelle del gregge saranno disperse ".
32 but after my resurrection I shal go ahead of you to Galilee.'	32 Ma dopo che io sarò risorto, vi precederò in Galilea».
33 At this, Peter said to him, 'Even if al fal away from you, I wil never fal away.'	33 Pietro replicò: «Quando anche tutti si scandalizzassero di te, io non mi scandalizzerò».
34 Jesus answered him, 'In truth I tel you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disownedme three times.'	34 Gesù gli disse: «In verità ti dico: - Questa notte prima che il gallo canti, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte. -».
35 Peter said to him, 'Even if I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And al the disciples saidthe same.	35 E Pietro a lui: «Quand'anche dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò». Tutti gli altri discepoli parlarono nello stesso modo.
36 Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, 'Stayhere while I go over there to pray.'	36 Allora Gesù entrò con loro in un podere, detto Getsemani, e disse ai discepoli: «Sedete qui, mentre io mi allontano a pregare».
37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And he began to feel sadness and anguish.	37 E presi con sè Pietro e i due figliuoli di Zebedeo cominciò a provare tristezza e angoscia.
38 Then he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me.'	38 E disse loro: «L'anima mia è triste fino alla morte; rimanete qui e vegliate con me».
39 And going on a little further he fel on his face and prayed. 'My Father,' he said, 'if it is possible, letthis cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.'	39 E fattosi un po' in là, si buttò col volto a terra, pregando e dicendo: «Padre mio, se è possibile passi da me questo calice! Tuttavia non come voglio io, ma come vuoi tu».
40 He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'So you had not thestrength to stay awake with me for one hour?	40 Venne poi ai discepoli, e trovandoli addormentati disse a Pietro: «Così non siete stati capaci di vegliare un'ora sola con me?
41 Stay awake, and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing enough, but human nature isweak.'	41 Vegliate e pregate, per entrare in tentazione, perchè lo spirito è pronto ma la carne è debole».
42 Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: 'My Father,' he said, 'if this cup cannot pass by, butI must drink it, your wil be done!'	42 Di nuovo per la seconda volta s'allontanò e pregò così: «Padre mio, se non è possibile che questo calice sia rimosso da me senza ch'io lo beva, sia fatta la tua volontà».
43 And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy.	43 E tornato, li trovò di nuovo addormentati, perchè erano oltremodo stanchi.
44 Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words.	44 Li lasciò e andò di nuovo a pregare per la terza volta, ripetendo le medesime parole.
45 Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest.Look, the hour has come when the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	45 Poi tornò ai discepoli e disse loro: «Dormite pure e riposate; ecco, è vicina l'ora e il Figliuol dell'uomo sarà dato nelle mani dei peccatori.
46 Get up! Let us go! Look, my betrayer is not far away.'	46 Alzatevi, andiamo; ecco, chi mi tradisce è vicino.
47 And suddenly while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a largenumber of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.	47 Mentr'egli parlava ancora, arrivò Giuda, uno dei Dodici e con lui molta gente armata di bastoni e di spade, mandata dai principi dei Sacerdoti e dagli anziani del popolo.
48 Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him.'	48 Il traditore aveva dato loro questo segnale: «Chi bacerò, è lui; pigliatelo».
49 So he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi,' and kissed him.	49 E accostatosi subito a Gesù, disse: «Ti saluto, o Maestro!». E lo baciò.
50 Jesus said to him, 'My friend, do what you are here for.' Then they came forward, seized Jesus andarrested him.	50 Gesù gli disse: «Amico, a che sei venuto?». Allora, accostatisi, misero le mani addosso a Gesù e lo arrestarono.
51 And suddenly, one of the fol owers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck the high priest'sservant and cut off his ear.	51 Uno di quelli ch'erano con Gesù, stesa la mano, sfoderò la spada e ferì un servo del sommo sacerdote, tagliandogli via un orecchio.
52 Jesus then said, 'Put your sword back, for al who draw the sword wil die by the sword.	52 Allora Gesù gli disse: «Riponi la tua spada al suo posto; perchè tutti coloro che si serviranno della spada, periranno di spada.
53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, who would promptly send more than twelvelegions of angels to my defence?	53 Pensi tu forse che io non possa chiamare in aiuto il Padre mio, il quale mi manderebbe sull'atto più di dodici legioni di angeli?
54 But then, how would the scriptures be fulfil ed that say this is the way it must be?'	54 Come dunque si adempirebbero le Scritture, secondo le quali bisogna che avvenga così?».
55 It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out to capture mewith swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me.'	55 Nel medesimo tempo Gesù disse alle turbe: «Siete venuti con spade e bastoni per pigliarmi come se fossi un ladrone. Tutti i giorni io ero seduto in mezzo a voi, insegnando nel tempio, e non m'avete preso.
56 Now al this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then al the disciples deserted him and ranaway.	56 Ma tutto questo è avvenuto perchè s'adempissero le Scritture dei profeti». Allora tutti i discepoli l'abbandonarono e fuggirono via.
57 The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where thescribes and the elders were assembled.	57 Coloro che avevano arrestato Gesù, lo menaron da Caifa, sommo sacerdote, presso il quale si eran riuniti gli Scribi e gli anziani.
58 Peter followed him at a distance right to the high priest's palace, and he went in and sat down withthe attendants to see what the end would be.	58 E Pietro lo seguiva di lontano fin nell'atrio del sommo sacerdote; vi entrò e sedette coi servi, per vedere la fine.
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false,on which they might have him executed.	59 Ora, i principi dei Sacerdoti e tutto il Sinedrio cercavan qualche falsa testimonianza contro Gesù per farlo morire;
60 But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two cameforward	60 ma non ne trovavano alcuno, benchè si fossero presentati parecchi falsi testimoni. Infine se ne presentarono due,
61 and made a statement, 'This man said, "I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three daysbuild it up." '	61 i quali dissero: «Costui ha detto: - Posso distruggere il tempio di Dio e riedificarlo in tre giorni -».
62 The high priest then rose and said to him, 'Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence thesemen are bringing against you?'	62 Il sommo sacerdote, alzatosi, gli disse: «Non rispondi nulla a quanto questi uomini depongono contro di te?».
63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, 'I put you on oath by the living God to tel us ifyou are the Christ, the Son of God.'	63 Ma Gesù taceva. E il sommo sacerdote continuò: «Ti scongiuro per il Dio vivo di dirci se tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio».
64 Jesus answered him, 'It is you who say it. But, I tel you that from this time onward you wil see theSon of man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.'	64 Gesù gli rispose: «Tu l'hai detto; anzi io vi dico che d'ora innanzi vedrete il Figliuol dell'uomo seduto a destra dell'Onnipotente venire sulle nuvole del cielo».
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, 'He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have wenow? There! You have just heard the blasphemy.	65 Allora il sommo sacerdote si stracciò le vesti dicendo: «Ha bestemmiato! Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimoni? Voi avete udito la sua bestemmia.
66 What is your opinion?' They answered, 'He deserves to die.'	66 Che ve ne pare?». Quelli risposero: «È reo di morte».
67 Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him,	67 Allora gli sputarono in viso e gli dettero dei pugni; altri lo schiaffeggiavano
68 'Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you then?'	68 dicendo: «Cristo, indovina: chi t'ha percosso?».
69 Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him saying, 'You,too, were with Jesus the Galilean.'	69 Pietro intanto era seduto fuori nell'atrio; quando gli si accostò una serva che gli disse: «Anche tu eri con Gesù, il Galileo».
70 But he denied it in front of them al . 'I do not know what you are talking about,' he said.	70 Ma egli lo negò davanti a tutti, dicendo: «Io non so cosa tu voglia dire».
71 When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, 'Thisman was with Jesus the Nazarene.'	71 Mentre usciva dalla porta lo vide un'altra serva, che disse ai circostanti: «Costui pure era con Gesù Nazareno».
72 And again, with an oath, he denied it, 'I do not know the man.'	72 Ed egli negò di nuovo con giuramento: «Non conosco quell'uomo».
73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'You are certainly one of them too! Why, youraccent gives you away.'	73 Poco dopo gli astanti s'accostarono a Pietro e gli dissero: «Certamente, anche tu sei uno di quelli, giacchè il tuo stesso modo di parlare ti fa riconoscere».
74 Then he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man.' And at once the cock crowed,	74 Allora cominciò a imprecare e spergiurare che non conosceva quell'uomo. E in quel momento un gallo cantò.
75 and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you wil have disowned methree times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly.	75 Pietro si ricordò della parola di Gesù, che gli aveva detto: «Prima che il gallo canti, tu mi avrai rinnegato tre volte». E uscito fuori, pianse amaramente.
