NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Jesus had now finished al he wanted to say, and he told his disciples,1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended all these words, he said to his disciples:
'It wil be Passover, as you know, in two days' time, and the Son of man wil be handed over to becrucified.'2 You know that after two days shall be the pasch, and the son of man shall be delivered up to be crucified:
Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whosename was Caiaphas,3 Then were gathered together the chief priests and ancients of the people into the court of the high priest, who was called Caiphas:
and made plans to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.4 And they consulted together, that by subtilty they might apprehend Jesus, and put him to death.
They said, however, 'It must not be during the festivities; there must be no disturbance among thepeople.'5 But they said: Not on the festival day, lest perhaps there should be a tumult among the people.
Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease,when6 And when Jesus was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper,
a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and poured it on his head ashe was at table.7 There came to him a woman having an alabaster box of precious ointment, and poured it on his head as he was at table.
When they saw this, the disciples said indignantly, 'Why this waste?8 And the disciples seeing it, had indignation, saying: To what purpose is this waste?
This could have been sold for a high price and the money given the poor.'9 For this might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.
But Jesus noticed this and said, 'Why are you upsetting the woman? What she has done for me isindeed a good work!10 And Jesus knowing it, said to them: Why do you trouble this woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.
You have the poor with you always, but you wil not always have me.11 For the poor you have always with you: but me you have not always.
When she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.12 For she in pouring this ointment upon my body, hath done it for my burial.
In truth I tel you, wherever in al the world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be toldas well, in remembrance of her.'13 Amen I say to you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which she hath done, shall be told for a memory of her.
Then one of the Twelve, the man cal ed Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests14 Then went one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, to the chief priests,
and said, 'What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?' They paid him thirty silverpieces,15 And said to them: What will you give me, and I will deliver him unto you? But they appointed him thirty pieces of silver.
and from then onwards he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.16 And from thenceforth he sought opportunity to betray him.
Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, 'Where do you want usto make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'17 And on the first day of the Azymes, the disciples came to Jesus, saying: Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the pasch?
He said, 'Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, "The Master says: My time is near. It is atyour house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples." '18 But Jesus said: Go ye into the city to a certain man, and say to him: the master saith, My time is near at hand, with thee I make the pasch with my disciples.
The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.19 And the disciples did as Jesus appointed to them, and they prepared the pasch.
When evening came he was at table with the Twelve.20 But when it was evening, he sat down with his twelve disciples.
And while they were eating he said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me.'21 And whilst they were eating, he said: Amen I say to you, that one of you is about to betray me.
They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, 'Not me, Lord, surely?'22 And they being very much troubled, began every one to say: Is it I, Lord?
He answered, 'Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me wil betray me.23 But he answering, said: He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, he shall betray me.
The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom theSon of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!'24 The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man shall be betrayed: it were better for him, if that man had not been born.
Judas, who was to betray him, asked in his turn, 'Not me, Rabbi, surely?' Jesus answered, 'It is youwho say it.'25 And Judas that betrayed him, answering, said: Is it I, Rabbi? He saith to him: Thou hast said it.
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gaveit to the disciples. 'Take it and eat,' he said, 'this is my body.'26 And whilst they were at supper, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke: and gave to his disciples, and said: Take ye, and eat. This is my body.
Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them saying, 'Drink from this, allof you,27 And taking the chalice, he gave thanks, and gave to them, saying: Drink ye all of this.
for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many unto remission of sins.
From now on, I tel you, I shal never again drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you inthe kingdom of my Father.'29 And I say to you, I will not drink from henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I shall drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father.
After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.30 And a hymn being said, they went out unto mount Olivet.
Then Jesus said to them, 'You wil al fall away from me tonight, for the scripture says: I shal strikethe shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered,31 Then Jesus said to them: All you shall be scandalized in me this night. For it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be dispersed.
but after my resurrection I shal go ahead of you to Galilee.'32 But after I shall be risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.
At this, Peter said to him, 'Even if al fal away from you, I wil never fal away.'33 And Peter answering, said to him: Although all shall be scandalized in thee, I will never be scandalized.
Jesus answered him, 'In truth I tel you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disownedme three times.'34 Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee, that in this night before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice.
Peter said to him, 'Even if I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And al the disciples saidthe same.35 Peter saith to him: Yea, though I should die with thee, I will not deny thee. And in like manner said all the disciples.
Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, 'Stayhere while I go over there to pray.'36 Then Jesus came with them into a country place which is called Gethsemani; and he said to his disciples: Sit you here, till I go yonder and pray.
He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And he began to feel sadness and anguish.37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to grow sorrowful and to be sad.
Then he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me.'38 Then he saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death: stay you here, and watch with me.
And going on a little further he fel on his face and prayed. 'My Father,' he said, 'if it is possible, letthis cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.'39 And going a little further, he fell upon his face, praying, and saying: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'So you had not thestrength to stay awake with me for one hour?40 And he cometh to his disciples, and findeth them asleep, and he saith to Peter: What? Could you not watch one hour with me?
Stay awake, and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing enough, but human nature isweak.'41 Watch ye, and pray that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak.
Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: 'My Father,' he said, 'if this cup cannot pass by, butI must drink it, your wil be done!'42 Again the second time, he went and prayed, saying: My Father, if this chalice may not pass away, but I must drink it, thy will be done.
And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy.43 And he cometh again and findeth them sleeping: for their eyes were heavy.
Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words.44 And leaving them, he went again: and he prayed the third time, saying the selfsame word.
Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest.Look, the hour has come when the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.45 Then he cometh to his disciples, and saith to them: Sleep ye now and take your rest; behold the hour is at hand, and the Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Get up! Let us go! Look, my betrayer is not far away.'46 Rise, let us go: behold he is at hand that will betray me.
And suddenly while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a largenumber of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.47 As he yet spoke, behold Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the ancients of the people.
Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him.'48 And he that betrayed him, gave them a sign, saying: Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he, hold him fast.
So he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi,' and kissed him.49 And forthwith coming to Jesus, he said: Hail, Rabbi. And he kissed him.
Jesus said to him, 'My friend, do what you are here for.' Then they came forward, seized Jesus andarrested him.50 And Jesus said to him: Friend, whereto art thou come? Then they came up, and laid hands on Jesus, and held him.
And suddenly, one of the fol owers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck the high priest'sservant and cut off his ear.51 And behold one of them that were with Jesus, stretching forth his hand, drew out his sword: and striking the servant of the high priest, cut off his ear.
Jesus then said, 'Put your sword back, for al who draw the sword wil die by the sword.52 Then Jesus saith to him: Put up again thy sword into its place: for all that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, who would promptly send more than twelvelegions of angels to my defence?53 Thinkest thou that I cannot ask my Father, and he will give me presently more than twelve legions of angels?
But then, how would the scriptures be fulfil ed that say this is the way it must be?'54 How then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that so it must be done?
It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out to capture mewith swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me.'55 In that same hour Jesus said to the multitudes: You are come out as it were to a robber with swords and clubs to apprehend me. I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you laid not hands on me.
Now al this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then al the disciples deserted him and ranaway.56 Now all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then the disciples all leaving him, fled.
The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where thescribes and the elders were assembled.57 But they holding Jesus led him to Caiphas the high priest, where the scribes and the ancients were assembled.
Peter followed him at a distance right to the high priest's palace, and he went in and sat down withthe attendants to see what the end would be.58 And Peter followed him afar off, even to the court of the high priest. And going in, he sat with the servants, that he might see the end.
The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false,on which they might have him executed.59 And the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death:
But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two cameforward60 And they found not, whereas many false witnesses had come in. And last of all there came two false witnesses:
and made a statement, 'This man said, "I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three daysbuild it up." '61 And they said: This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and after three days to rebuild it.
The high priest then rose and said to him, 'Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence thesemen are bringing against you?'62 And the high priest rising up, said to him: Answerest thou nothing to the things which these witness against thee?
But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, 'I put you on oath by the living God to tel us ifyou are the Christ, the Son of God.'63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest said to him: I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us if thou be the Christ the Son of God.
Jesus answered him, 'It is you who say it. But, I tel you that from this time onward you wil see theSon of man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.'64 Jesus saith to him: Thou hast said it. Nevertheless I say to you, hereafter you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of God, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, 'He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have wenow? There! You have just heard the blasphemy.65 Then the high priests rent his garments, saying: He hath blasphemed; what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard the blasphemy:
What is your opinion?' They answered, 'He deserves to die.'66 What think you? But they answering, said: He is guilty of death.
Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him,67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him: and others struck his face with the palms of their hands,
'Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you then?'68 Saying: Prophesy unto us, O Christ, who is he that struck thee?
Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him saying, 'You,too, were with Jesus the Galilean.'69 But Peter sat without in the court: and there came to him a servant maid, saying: Thou also wast with Jesus the Galilean.
But he denied it in front of them al . 'I do not know what you are talking about,' he said.70 But he denied before them all, saying: I know not what thou sayest.
When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, 'Thisman was with Jesus the Nazarene.'71 And as he went out of the gate, another maid saw him, and she saith to them that were there: This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth.
And again, with an oath, he denied it, 'I do not know the man.'72 And again he denied with an oath, I know not the man.
A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'You are certainly one of them too! Why, youraccent gives you away.'73 And after a little while they came that stood by, and said to Peter: Surely thou also art one of them; for even thy speech doth discover thee.
Then he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man.' And at once the cock crowed,74 Then he began to curse and to swear that he knew not the man. And immediately the cock crew.
and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you wil have disowned methree times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly.75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus which he had said: Before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice. And going forth, he wept bitterly.
