1 Jesus had now finished al he wanted to say, and he told his disciples,	1 Aconteceu que, tendo Jesus acabado todos estes discursos, disse aos seus discípulos:
2 'It wil be Passover, as you know, in two days' time, and the Son of man wil be handed over to becrucified.'	2 "Vós sabeis que daqui a dois dias será celebrada a Páscoa, e o Filho do homem será entregue para ser crucificado."
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whosename was Caiaphas,	3 Então se reuniram os príncipes dos sacerdotes e os anciãos do povo no palácio do sumo pontífice, que se chamava Caifás,
4 and made plans to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.	4 e tiveram conselho acerca dos meios de prenderem a Jesus por astúcia, e de o matarem.
5 They said, however, 'It must not be during the festivities; there must be no disturbance among thepeople.'	5 Mas eles diziam: Não (se faça isto) no dia da festa, não suceda levantar-se algum tumulto entre o povo.
6 Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease,when	6 Estando Jesus em Belânia, em casa de Simão o leproso,
7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and poured it on his head ashe was at table.	7 aproximou-se dele uma mulher com um vaso de alabastro, cheio de um bálsamo precioso, e o derramou sobre a cabeça dele, estando à mesa.
8 When they saw this, the disciples said indignantly, 'Why this waste?	8 Vendo isto, os discípulos indignaram-se, dizendo: "Para que foi este desperdício?
9 This could have been sold for a high price and the money given the poor.'	9 Porque este bálsamo podia vender-se por bom preço, e dar-se aos pobres."
10 But Jesus noticed this and said, 'Why are you upsetting the woman? What she has done for me isindeed a good work!	10 Jesus, sabendo isto, disse-lhes: "Porque molestais esta mulher? Ela fez-me verdadeiramente uma boa obra.
11 You have the poor with you always, but you wil not always have me.	11 Porque vós tereis sempre convosco pobres; mas a mim nem sempre me tereis.
12 When she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.	12 Derramando ela este bálsamo sobre o meu corpo, fê-lo como para me sepultar.
13 In truth I tel you, wherever in al the world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be toldas well, in remembrance of her.'	13 Em verdade vos digo que em toda a parte onde for pregado este Evangelho — em todo o mundo—, publicar-se-á também para sua memória o que ela fez."
14 Then one of the Twelve, the man cal ed Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests	14 Então um dos doze, que se chamava Judas Iscariotes, foi ter com os príncipes dos sacerdotes,
15 and said, 'What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?' They paid him thirty silverpieces,	15 e disse-lhes: "Que me quereis vós dar, e eu vo-lo entregarei?" Justaram trinta moedas de prata.
16 and from then onwards he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.	16 Desde então buscava oportunidade para o entregar.
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, 'Where do you want usto make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'	17 No primeiro dia dos ázimos aproximaram-se de Jesus os discípulos, dizendo: "Onde queres que te preparemos o que é preciso para comer a Páscoa?"
18 He said, 'Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, "The Master says: My time is near. It is atyour house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples." '	18 Jesus disse: "Ide à cidade, a casa de um tal, e dizei-Ihe: O Mestre manda dizer: O meu tempo está próximo, quero celebrar a Páscoa em tua casa com meus discípulos."
19 The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.	19 Os discípulos fizeram como Jesus tinha ordenado, e prepararam a Páscoa.
20 When evening came he was at table with the Twelve.	20 Chegada a tarde, pôs-se Jesus à mesa com os doze.
21 And while they were eating he said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me.'	21 Enquanto comiam, disse-lhes: "Em verdade vos digo que um de vós me há-de entregar."
22 They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, 'Not me, Lord, surely?'	22 Eles, muito tristes, cada um começou a dizer: "Porventura sou eu, Senhor?"
23 He answered, 'Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me wil betray me.	23 Ele respondeu; "O que mete comigo a mão no prato esse me entregará.
24 The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom theSon of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!'	24 O Filho do homem vai certamente, como está escrito dele, mas ai daquele homem, por quem será entregue o Filho do homem! Melhor fora a tal homem que não tivesse nascido."
25 Judas, who was to betray him, asked in his turn, 'Not me, Rabbi, surely?' Jesus answered, 'It is youwho say it.'	25 Judas, o traidor, tomou a palavra e disse: "Sou eu, porventura, Mestre?" Jesus respondeu-lhe; "Tu o disseste."
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gaveit to the disciples. 'Take it and eat,' he said, 'this is my body.'	26 Enquanto comiam, Jesus tomou pão e o benzeu, e o partiu, e deu-o a seus discípulos, dizendo: "Tomai e comei, isto é o meu corpo."
27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them saying, 'Drink from this, allof you,	27 Depois, tomando um cálice, deu graças, e deu-lho, dizendo: "Bebei dele todos.
28 for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.	28 Porque isto é o meu sangue, o sangue da nova aliança, que será derramado por muitos para remissão dos pecados.
29 From now on, I tel you, I shal never again drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you inthe kingdom of my Father.'	29 Digo-vos: desta hora em diante não beberei mais deste fruto da videira até aquele dia, em que o beberei novo convosco no reino de meu Pai."
30 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.	30 Depois do canto dos salmos, saíram para o monte das Oliveiras.
31 Then Jesus said to them, 'You wil al fall away from me tonight, for the scripture says: I shal strikethe shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered,	31 Então Jesus disse-lhes: "A todos vós serei esta noite uma ocasião de escândalo porque está escrito (Zc. 13, 7): Ferirei o pastor, e as ovelhas do rebanho se dispersarão.
32 but after my resurrection I shal go ahead of you to Galilee.'	32 Porém, depois que eu ressuscitar, irei diante de vós para a Galielia."
33 At this, Peter said to him, 'Even if al fal away from you, I wil never fal away.'	33 Pedro respondeu-lhe: "Ainda que todos se escandalizem a teu respeito, eu nunca me escandalizarei."
34 Jesus answered him, 'In truth I tel you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disownedme three times.'	34 Jesus disse-lhe: "Em verdade te digo que esta noite, antes que o galo cante, me negarás três vezes."
35 Peter said to him, 'Even if I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And al the disciples saidthe same.	35 Pedro disse-lhe: "Ainda que eu tenha de morrer contigo, não te negarei." Do mesmo modo falaram todos os discípulos.
36 Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, 'Stayhere while I go over there to pray.'	36 Então foi Jesus com eles a um lugar chamado Getsemani, e disse-lhes: "Sentai-vos aqui, enquanto eu vou acolá orar."
37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And he began to feel sadness and anguish.	37 E, tendo tomado consigo Pedro e os dois filhos de Zebedeu, começou a entristecer-se e angustiar-se.
38 Then he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me.'	38 Disse-lhes então: "A minha alma está numa tristeza mortal; ficai aqui e vigiai comigo."
39 And going on a little further he fel on his face and prayed. 'My Father,' he said, 'if it is possible, letthis cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.'	39 Adiantando-se um pouco, prostrou-se com o rosto em terra, e fez esta oração: "Meu Pai, se é possível, passe de mim este cálice! Todavia não se faça como eu quero, mas sim como tu queres."
40 He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'So you had not thestrength to stay awake with me for one hour?	40 Depois foi ter com seus discípulos, encontrou-os dormindo, e disse a Pedro: "Visto isso não pudeste vigiar uma hora comigo?
41 Stay awake, and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing enough, but human nature isweak.'	41 Vigiai e orai, para que não entreis em tentação. O espírito na verdade está pronto, mas a carne é fraca."
42 Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: 'My Father,' he said, 'if this cup cannot pass by, butI must drink it, your wil be done!'	42 Retirou-se de novo pela segunda vez e orou assim: "Meu Pai, se este cálice não pode passar sem que eu o beba, faça-se a tua vontade."
43 And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy.	43 Foi novamente, e encontrou-os dormindo, porque os seus olhos estavam pesados (por causa do sono).
44 Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words.	44 Deixando-os, foi de novo, e orou terceira vez, dizendo as mesmas palavras.
45 Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest.Look, the hour has come when the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	45 Depois foi ter novamente com os seus discípulos, e disse-lhes: "Dormi agora e descansai, eis que chegou a hora, em que o Filho do homem vai ser entregue nas mãos dos pecadores.
46 Get up! Let us go! Look, my betrayer is not far away.'	46 Levantai-vos, vamos. Eis que se aproxima o que me há-de entregar."
47 And suddenly while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a largenumber of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.	47 Estando ele ainda a falar, eis que chega Judas, um dos doze, e com ele uma grande multidão com espadas e varapaus, enviada pelos príncipes dos sacerdotes e pelos anciãos do povo.
48 Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him.'	48 O traidor tinha-lhes dado este sinal: "Aquele a quem eu der um ósculo, é esse; prendrei-o."
49 So he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi,' and kissed him.	49 Aproximando-se logo de Jesus, disse: "Salve Mestre." E deu-lhe um ósculo.
50 Jesus said to him, 'My friend, do what you are here for.' Then they came forward, seized Jesus andarrested him.	50 Jesus disse-lhe: "Amigo, a que vieste !" Então avançaram, lançaram mão de Jesus, e prenderam-no.
51 And suddenly, one of the fol owers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck the high priest'sservant and cut off his ear.	51 E eis que um dos que estavam com Jesus, estendendo a mão, desembainhou a sua espada, e, ferindo um servo do sumo pontífice, lhe cortou uma orelha.
52 Jesus then said, 'Put your sword back, for al who draw the sword wil die by the sword.	52 Jesus disse-Ihe: "Mete a tua espada no seu lugar, porque todos os que tomarem espada (por autoridade própria), morrerão à espada.
53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, who would promptly send more than twelvelegions of angels to my defence?	53 Julgas porventura que eu não posso rogar a meu Pai, e que ele me não porá aqui logo mais de doze legiões de anjos?
54 But then, how would the scriptures be fulfil ed that say this is the way it must be?'	54 Como, pois, se cumprirão as Escrituras segundo as quais assim deve suceder?"
55 It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out to capture mewith swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me.'	55 Depois, Jesus disse à multidão: "Vós viestes armados de espadas e de varapaus para me prender, como se faz a um salteador. Todos os dias estava eu sentado entre vós ensinando no templo, e não me prendestes.
56 Now al this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then al the disciples deserted him and ranaway.	56 Mas tudo isto aconteceu para que se cumprissem as Escrituras dos profetas." Então todos os discípulos o abandonaram e fugiram.
57 The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where thescribes and the elders were assembled.	57 Os que tinham prendido Jesus Ievaram-no a casa de Caifás, sumo sacerdote, onde se tinham reunido os escribas e os anciãos.
58 Peter followed him at a distance right to the high priest's palace, and he went in and sat down withthe attendants to see what the end would be.	58 Pedro seguia-o de longe, até ao átrio do príncipe dos sacerdotes. E, tendo entrado, sentou-se com os servos para ver o fim de tudo isto.
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false,on which they might have him executed.	59 Entretanto os príncipes dos sacerdotes e todo o conselho procuravam algum falso testemunho contra Jesus, a fim de o entregarem à morte,
60 But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two cameforward	60 e não o encontravam, posto que se tivessem apresentado muitas testemunhas falsas. Por último, chegaram duas testemunhas,
61 and made a statement, 'This man said, "I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three daysbuild it up." '	61 que declararam: "Este homem disse: Posso destruir o templo de Deus e reedificá-lo em três dias."
62 The high priest then rose and said to him, 'Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence thesemen are bringing against you?'	62 Levantando-se, o príncipe dos sacerdotes disse-lhe: "Nada respondes ao que estes depõem contra ti?"
63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, 'I put you on oath by the living God to tel us ifyou are the Christ, the Son of God.'	63 Jesus, porém, estava calado. E o sumo sacerdote disse-lhe: "Eu te conjuro por Deus vivo que nos digas se tu és o Cristo, o Filho de Deus."
64 Jesus answered him, 'It is you who say it. But, I tel you that from this time onward you wil see theSon of man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.'	64 Jesus respondeu-lhe: "Tu o disseste. Digo-vos mais que vereis depois o Filho do homem sentado à direita do poder de Deus, e vir sobre as nuvens do céu."
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, 'He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have wenow? There! You have just heard the blasphemy.	65 Então o sumo sacerdote rasgou os seus vestidos, dizendo: "Blasfemou; que necessidade temos de mais testemunhas? Eis acabais de ouvir a blasfêmia.
66 What is your opinion?' They answered, 'He deserves to die.'	66 Que vos parece?" Eles responderam: "É réu de morte."
67 Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him,	67 Então cuspiram-lhe no rosto, e feriram-no a punhadas. Outros deram-lhe bofetadas,
68 'Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you then?'	68 dizendo: "Profetiza, Cristo! Diz-nos quem é que te feriu."
69 Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him saying, 'You,too, were with Jesus the Galilean.'	69 Entretanto Pedro estava sentado fora no átrio. Aproximou-se dele uma criada, dizendo : "Tu também estavas com Jesus, o Galileu."
70 But he denied it in front of them al . 'I do not know what you are talking about,' he said.	70 Mas ele negou diante de todos, dizendo: "Não sei o que dizes."
71 When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, 'Thisman was with Jesus the Nazarene.'	71 Saindo ele à porta, viu-o outra criada, e disse para os que ali se encontravam: "Este também andava com Jesus Nazareno."
72 And again, with an oath, he denied it, 'I do not know the man.'	72 Novamente ele negou com juramento, dizendo: "Não conheço tal homem."
73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'You are certainly one of them too! Why, youraccent gives you away.'	73 Pouco depois aproximaram-se de Pedro os que ali estavam, e disseram: "Tu certamente és também dos tais, porque até o teu modo de falar te dá a conhecer."
74 Then he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man.' And at once the cock crowed,	74 Então começou a fazer imprecações e a jurar que não conhecia tal homem. Imediatamente o galo cantou.
75 and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you wil have disowned methree times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly.	75 Pedro lembrou-se da palavra que lhe tinha dito Jesus: "Antes de cantar o galo, três vezes me negarás." E, tendo saído para fora, chorou amargamente.
