1 Jesus had now finished al he wanted to say, and he told his disciples,	1 Après avoir terminé tous ces discours, Jésus dit à ses disciples:
2 'It wil be Passover, as you know, in two days' time, and the Son of man wil be handed over to becrucified.'	2 "Vous savez que dans deux jours c’est la Pâque; le Fils de l’Homme sera livré pour être mis en croix.”
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whosename was Caiaphas,	3 Au même moment les chefs des prêtres et les Anciens du peuple se réunissaient à la résidence du Grand Prêtre, qui s’appelait Caïphe.
4 and made plans to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.	4 Là ils se mirent d’accord pour s’emparer de Jésus dans un coup monté et pour le mettre à mort.
5 They said, however, 'It must not be during the festivities; there must be no disturbance among thepeople.'	5 Mais ils disaient: "Pas durant la fête, car le peuple pourrait s’agiter.”
6 Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease,when	6 Tandis que Jésus était à Béthanie dans la maison de Simon le lépreux,
7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and poured it on his head ashe was at table.	7 une femme s’approcha de lui. 8 When they saw this, the disciples said indignantly, 'Why this waste?	8 En voyant cela les disciples s’indignèrent: "Pourquoi ce gâchis?
9 This could have been sold for a high price and the money given the poor.'	9 On aurait pu vendre ce parfum très cher et donner l’argent aux pauvres.”
10 But Jesus noticed this and said, 'Why are you upsetting the woman? What she has done for me isindeed a good work!	10 Mais Jésus s’en aperçoit et il leur dit: "Pourquoi cherchez-vous des ennuis à cette femme? Ce qu’elle vient de faire pour moi est une bonne œuvre.
11 You have the poor with you always, but you wil not always have me.	11 Des pauvres, vous en avez toujours avec vous, mais moi vous ne m’aurez pas toujours.
12 When she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.	12 Elle préparait déjà ma sépulture quand elle a versé sur mon corps ce parfum de myrrhe.
13 In truth I tel you, wherever in al the world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be toldas well, in remembrance of her.'	13 “En vérité je vous le dis, partout où cet Évangile sera proclamé, dans le monde entier, on dira aussi ce qu’elle a fait et on se souviendra d’elle.”
14 Then one of the Twelve, the man cal ed Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests	14 À ce moment l’un des Douze, qui s’appelait Judas Iscariote, alla trouver les chefs des prêtres
15 and said, 'What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?' They paid him thirty silverpieces,	15 et leur dit: "Combien me donnerez-vous pour que je vous le livre?” Ils lui donnèrent trente pièces d’argent,
16 and from then onwards he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.	16 et dès lors il chercha l’occasion de le livrer.
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, 'Where do you want usto make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'	17 Le premier jour des Pains sans Levain, les disciples vinrent demander à Jésus: "Où mangeras-tu la Pâque? Où veux-tu que nous la préparions?”
18 He said, 'Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, "The Master says: My time is near. It is atyour house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples." '	18 Il leur dit: "Allez à la ville, chez un tel, et dites-lui: Le Maître te fait dire: Mon heure est proche, je veux faire la Pâque chez toi avec mes disciples.”
19 The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.	19 Les disciples firent comme Jésus l’avait ordonné et ils préparèrent la Pâque.
20 When evening came he was at table with the Twelve.	20 Le soir venu, Jésus se mit à table avec les Douze et,
21 And while they were eating he said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me.'	21 pendant qu’ils mangeaient, il leur dit: "En vérité je vous le dis, l’un de vous va me livrer.”
22 They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, 'Not me, Lord, surely?'	22 Ils en étaient profondément peinés et chacun se mit à lui demander: "Ce serait moi, Seigneur?”
23 He answered, 'Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me wil betray me.	23 Et lui leur dit: "La main du traître était avec la mienne, prenant du même plat!
24 The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom theSon of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!'	24 Le Fils de l’Homme s’en va comme l’Écriture le dit de lui, mais malheur à cet homme par qui le Fils de l’Homme est livré. Il vaudrait mieux pour lui qu’il ne soit pas né.”
25 Judas, who was to betray him, asked in his turn, 'Not me, Rabbi, surely?' Jesus answered, 'It is youwho say it.'	25 Judas prit également la parole: "Ce serait moi, Seigneur?” Et Jésus répondit: "Tu l’as dit.”
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gaveit to the disciples. 'Take it and eat,' he said, 'this is my body.'	26 Pendant qu’ils mangeaient, Jésus prit du pain, prononça une bénédiction et le rompit. Puis il le donna aux disciples en disant: "Prenez et mangez, ceci est mon corps.”
27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them saying, 'Drink from this, allof you,	27 Ensuite il prit la coupe, il rendit grâce et la leur donna en disant: "Buvez-en tous;
28 for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.	28 ceci est mon sang, le sang de l’alliance, qui est versé pour une multitude, pour le pardon des péchés.
29 From now on, I tel you, I shal never again drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you inthe kingdom of my Father.'	29 “Maintenant je vous le dis: je ne boirai plus de ce produit de la vigne jusqu’au jour où, avec vous, je boirai le vin nouveau dans le Royaume de mon Père.”
30 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.	30 Après cela ils chantèrent les hymnes et partirent vers le mont des Oliviers.
31 Then Jesus said to them, 'You wil al fall away from me tonight, for the scripture says: I shal strikethe shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered,	31 Alors Jésus leur dit: "Cette nuit vous allez tous chuter à cause de moi. Car il est écrit: Je frapperai le pasteur et les brebis du troupeau seront dispersées.
32 but after my resurrection I shal go ahead of you to Galilee.'	32 Mais quand je me relèverai, j’irai vous attendre en Galilée.”
33 At this, Peter said to him, 'Even if al fal away from you, I wil never fal away.'	33 Pierre lui dit: "Même si tous tombent et abandonnent, moi jamais!”
34 Jesus answered him, 'In truth I tel you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disownedme three times.'	34 Jésus répond: "En vérité je te le dis, cette nuit même, avant que le coq ne chante, tu m’auras renié trois fois.”
35 Peter said to him, 'Even if I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And al the disciples saidthe same.	35 Mais Pierre continue: "Même s’il me fallait mourir avec toi, je ne te renierais pas.” Et tous les disciples disent la même chose.
36 Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, 'Stayhere while I go over there to pray.'	36 Après cela Jésus arrive avec eux à une propriété appelée Gethsémani et il dit aux disciples: "Asseyez-vous ici pendant que j’irai prier là-bas.”
37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And he began to feel sadness and anguish.	37 Jésus prend avec lui Pierre et les deux fils de Zébédée, et il commence à être envahi par la tristesse et l’angoisse.
38 Then he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me.'	38 Il leur dit: "Mon âme est triste à en mourir. Restez ici et veillez avec moi.”
39 And going on a little further he fel on his face and prayed. 'My Father,' he said, 'if it is possible, letthis cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.'	39 Puis il s’éloigne un peu et se prosterne face contre terre pour prier, disant: "Mon Père, si c’est possible, que cette coupe s’éloigne de moi. Cependant, non pas comme je veux, mais comme tu veux.”
40 He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'So you had not thestrength to stay awake with me for one hour?	40 Jésus vient alors vers les disciples et les trouve endormis; il dit à Pierre: "Vous n’avez donc pas été capables de rester une heure éveillés avec moi.
41 Stay awake, and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing enough, but human nature isweak.'	41 Veillez et priez pour ne pas être pris dans la tentation. Car l’esprit est généreux, mais la chair est faible.”
42 Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: 'My Father,' he said, 'if this cup cannot pass by, butI must drink it, your wil be done!'	42 De nouveau Jésus s’éloigne et il prie une deuxième fois: "Mon Père, si cette coupe ne peut passer sans que je la boive, que ta volonté soit faite!”
43 And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy.	43 Il revient et les trouve encore endormis: leurs yeux étaient lourds de sommeil.
44 Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words.	44 Alors il les laisse, et une troisième fois il répète la même prière.
45 Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest.Look, the hour has come when the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	45 Lorsqu’il revient vers les disciples il leur dit: "C’est bien le moment de dormir et de vous reposer! L’heure est venue, et le Fils de l’Homme va être livré entre les mains des pécheurs.
46 Get up! Let us go! Look, my betrayer is not far away.'	46 Levez-vous, allons! Celui qui me trahit est déjà là.”
47 And suddenly while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a largenumber of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.	47 Jésus parlait encore lorsque arriva Judas, l’un des Douze, et avec lui les gens des chefs des prêtres et des Anciens du peuple, toute une troupe armée d’épées et de gourdins.
48 Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him.'	48 Celui qui le trahissait leur avait donné un signe: "C’est celui que j’embrasserai. Arrêtez-le.”
49 So he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi,' and kissed him.	49 Aussitôt il approcha de Jésus et lui dit: "Salut, maître.” Et il l’embrassa.
50 Jesus said to him, 'My friend, do what you are here for.' Then they came forward, seized Jesus andarrested him.	50 Jésus lui dit: "Ami, fais donc ce qui t’amène.” Alors ils mirent la main sur lui et l’arrêtèrent
51 And suddenly, one of the fol owers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck the high priest'sservant and cut off his ear.	51 À ce moment, un de ceux qui étaient avec Jésus tira son épée, frappa le serviteur du Grand Prêtre et lui coupa l’oreille.
52 Jesus then said, 'Put your sword back, for al who draw the sword wil die by the sword.	52 Alors Jésus lui dit: "Remets ton épée à sa place. Tous ceux qui prennent l’épée périssent par l’épée.
53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, who would promptly send more than twelvelegions of angels to my defence?	53 Crois-tu que je ne pourrais pas faire appel à mon Père et il m’enverrait sur-le-champ douze légions d’anges?
54 But then, how would the scriptures be fulfil ed that say this is the way it must be?'	54 Si les Écritures disent que cela doit être, ne doivent-elles pas s’accomplir?”
55 It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out to capture mewith swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me.'	55 À ce moment Jésus dit à la foule: "Pour m’arrêter vous êtes venus avec épées et gourdins, comme si j’étais un brigand! Tous les jours pourtant j’allais m’asseoir dans le Temple pour y enseigner, et vous ne m’avez pas arrêté!
56 Now al this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then al the disciples deserted him and ranaway.	56 Mais tout cela s’est fait de façon que s’accomplissent les écrits prophétiques.” À ce moment-là tous les disciples l’abandonnèrent et s’enfuirent.
57 The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where thescribes and the elders were assembled.	57 Ceux qui avaient arrêté Jésus l’amenèrent chez le Grand Prêtre Caïphe. Là se réunirent les maîtres de la Loi et les Anciens.
58 Peter followed him at a distance right to the high priest's palace, and he went in and sat down withthe attendants to see what the end would be.	58 Pierre avait suivi de loin, jusqu’à la résidence du Grand Prêtre; il entra et s’assit avec les hommes de la police du Temple pour voir la fin.
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false,on which they might have him executed.	59 Les chefs des prêtres et tout le conseil du Sanhédrin cherchaient un faux témoignage pour condamner Jésus à mort.
60 But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two cameforward	60 Plusieurs faux témoins se présentèrent, mais on ne trouva rien. Voici pourtant que deux se présentent
61 and made a statement, 'This man said, "I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three daysbuild it up." '	61 et déclarent: "Cet homme a dit: Je suis capable de détruire le Temple de Dieu et de le rebâtir en trois jours.”
62 The high priest then rose and said to him, 'Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence thesemen are bringing against you?'	62 Alors le Grand Prêtre se lève et lui demande: "Tu ne réponds rien? Quelle est cette histoire dont ils t’accusent?”
63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, 'I put you on oath by the living God to tel us ifyou are the Christ, the Son of God.'	63 Mais Jésus gardait le silence. Alors le Grand Prêtre lui dit: "Au nom du Dieu vivant, je t’ordonne de nous dire si tu es le Messie, le Fils de Dieu.”
64 Jesus answered him, 'It is you who say it. But, I tel you that from this time onward you wil see theSon of man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.'	64 Et Jésus répond: "Tu l’as dit! Et j’ajoute que dès maintenant vous verrez le Fils de l’Homme siéger à la droite du Tout-Puissant et venir sur les nuées du ciel.”
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, 'He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have wenow? There! You have just heard the blasphemy.	65 Aussitôt le Grand Prêtre déchire ses vêtements en disant: "Il a blasphémé! Qu’avons-nous à faire de témoins? Vous venez d’entendre le blasphème.
66 What is your opinion?' They answered, 'He deserves to die.'	66 Quel est votre avis?” Ils répondent: "Il mérite la mort!”
67 Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him,	67 À ce moment on commence à le gifler et à lui cracher à la figure; d’autres le frappent
68 'Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you then?'	68 en disant: "Messie, fais le prophète, dis-nous qui t’a frappé!”
69 Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him saying, 'You,too, were with Jesus the Galilean.'	69 Pierre était toujours assis dehors dans la cour. Or voici qu’une petite servante s’approche et lui dit: "Toi aussi, tu étais avec Jésus le Galiléen.”
70 But he denied it in front of them al . 'I do not know what you are talking about,' he said.	70 Mais lui le nie devant tout le monde et il répond: "Je ne sais pas ce que tu veux dire.”
71 When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, 'Thisman was with Jesus the Nazarene.'	71 Comme il se rapproche de la porte pour sortir, une autre le voit et dit à ceux qui sont là: "Il accompagnait Jésus, le Nazaréen.”
72 And again, with an oath, he denied it, 'I do not know the man.'	72 De nouveau Pierre nie et même il jure: "Je ne connais pas cet homme!”
73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'You are certainly one of them too! Why, youraccent gives you away.'	73 Un peu plus tard ceux qui sont présents disent à Pierre: "Tu es sûrement l’un des leurs, tu as bien l’accent de là-bas.”
74 Then he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man.' And at once the cock crowed,	74 Mais lui commence à lancer des malédictions et à jurer: "Je ne connais pas cet homme!” Presque aussitôt un coq chante
75 and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you wil have disowned methree times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly.	75 et Pierre se rappelle le mot que Jésus lui a dit: "Avant que le coq ne chante, tu m’auras renié trois fois.” Alors il sort et il pleure amèrement.
