1 Jesus had now finished al he wanted to say, and he told his disciples,	1 Ed avvenne che Gesù, terminati tutti questi ragionamenti, disse ai suoi discepoli:
2 'It wil be Passover, as you know, in two days' time, and the Son of man wil be handed over to becrucified.'	2 Voi sapete che fra due giorni è Pasqua, e il Figlio dell'uomo sarà consegnato per essere crocifìsso.
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whosename was Caiaphas,	3 Allora si adunarono i principi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani del popolo nell'atrio del sommo sacerdote, detto Caifa,
4 and made plans to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.	4 e tennero consiglio per impadronirsi di Gesù con inganno e farlo morire.
5 They said, however, 'It must not be during the festivities; there must be no disturbance among thepeople.'	5 Ma dicevano: Non di festa, perchè non nasca tumulto nel popolo.
6 Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease,when	6 Or essendo Gesù a Befania in casa di Simone il lebbroso,
7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and poured it on his head ashe was at table.	7 gli si appressò una donna con un vaso di alabastro pieno d'unguento prezioso, e lo sparse sul capo di lui che stava a mensa.
8 When they saw this, the disciples said indignantly, 'Why this waste?	8 Veduto ciò, i discepoli dissero indignati: A che tanto scialacquo?
9 This could have been sold for a high price and the money given the poor.'	9 Quest'unguento si poteva vendere a caro prezzo e dare ai poveri.
10 But Jesus noticed this and said, 'Why are you upsetting the woman? What she has done for me isindeed a good work!	10 Ma Gesù accortosene, disse loro: Perchè recate molestia a questa donna? Ha fatto un'opera veramente buona verso di me.
11 You have the poor with you always, but you wil not always have me.	11 Chè i poveri li avrete sempre con voi, me però non sempre mi avrete.
12 When she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.	12 Costei, spargendo quest'unguento sul mio corpo, lo ha fatto per il mio seppellimento.
13 In truth I tel you, wherever in al the world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be toldas well, in remembrance of her.'	13 In verità vi dico: in tutto il mondo, ovunque sarà predicato questo Vangelo, sarà detto in sua ricordanza ciò che essa b a fatto.
14 Then one of the Twelve, the man cal ed Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests	14 Allora uno dei dodici, detto Giuda Iscariote, andato dai principi dei sacerdoti,
15 and said, 'What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?' They paid him thirty silverpieces,	15 disse loro: Che siete pronti a darmi, se io ve lo consegnerò? Ed essi gli fissarono trenta danari d'argento.
16 and from then onwards he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.	16 E da quel momento cercava l'opportunità di tradirlo.
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, 'Where do you want usto make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'	17 Il primo giorno degli azzimi, i discepoli s'accostarono a Gesù e gli dissero: Dove vuoi che ti apparecchiamo per mangiare la Pasqua?
18 He said, 'Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, "The Master says: My time is near. It is atyour house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples." '	18 Gesù rispose: Andate in città, dal tale, e ditegli: Il Maestro dice: il tempo mio è vicino; vengo da te a far la Pasqua coi miei discepoli.
19 The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.	19 E i discepoli fecero come aveva loro ordinato Gesù e prepararono la Pasqua.
20 When evening came he was at table with the Twelve.	20 E quando fu sera, si mise a tavola coi suoi dodici apostoli.
21 And while they were eating he said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me.'	21 E mentre mangiavano disse: In verità vi dico: uno di voi mi tradirà.
22 They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, 'Not me, Lord, surely?'	22 E molto rattristati, presero a dirgli uno dopo l'altro: Sono forse io, Signore?
23 He answered, 'Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me wil betray me.	23 Ma egli rispose: Colui che mette meco la mano nel piatto, quello mi tradirà.
24 The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom theSon of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!'	24 Il Figlio dell'uomo, certamente, se ne va, come sta scritto di lui; ma guai a quell'uomo per cui il Figlio dell'uomo è tradito: era meglio per lui che non fosse mai nato quell'uomo.
25 Judas, who was to betray him, asked in his turn, 'Not me, Rabbi, surely?' Jesus answered, 'It is youwho say it.'	25 Or Giuda, che lo tradiva prese a dire: Son forse io, Maestro? Gli rispose: Tu l'hai detto.
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gaveit to the disciples. 'Take it and eat,' he said, 'this is my body.'	26 Or mentre cenavano Gesù prese del pane, lo benedisse, lo spezzò; lo diede ai suoi discepoli e disse: Prendete e mangiate: questo è il mio corpo.
27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them saying, 'Drink from this, allof you,	27 E preso il calice, rese le grazie, e lo diede loro dicendo: Bevetene tutti;
28 for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.	28 chè questo è il mio sangue del nuovo testamento, il quale per molti sarà sparso in remissione dei peccati.
29 From now on, I tel you, I shal never again drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you inthe kingdom of my Father.'	29 Vi assicuro che non berrò più di questo frutto della vite fino a quel giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo con voi nel regno del Padre mio.
30 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.	30 E cantato l'inno andarono al monte Oliveto.
31 Then Jesus said to them, 'You wil al fall away from me tonight, for the scripture says: I shal strikethe shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered,	31 Allora Gesù disse loro: Tutti voi patirete scandalo per causa mia in questa notte; poiché sta scritto: Percoterò il pastore e saran disperse le pecore del gregge;
32 but after my resurrection I shal go ahead of you to Galilee.'	32 ma risuscitato che io sia, vi precederò in Galilea.
33 At this, Peter said to him, 'Even if al fal away from you, I wil never fal away.'	33 Pietro prese a dirgli: Quand'anche tutti patissero scandalo a cagion tua, io non mi scandalizzerò mai.
34 Jesus answered him, 'In truth I tel you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disownedme three times.'	34 Gesù gli disse: Ti dico in verità, che in questa notte, prima che il gallo canti, mi rinnegherai tre volte.
35 Peter said to him, 'Even if I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And al the disciples saidthe same.	35 E Pietro a lui: Anche se dovessi morir con te, non ti rinnegherò. Lo stesso dissero puro tutti i discepoli.
36 Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, 'Stayhere while I go over there to pray.'	36 Allora Gesù andò con essi in un podere chiamato Getsemani, o disse ai suoi discepoli: Fermatevi qui mentre io vado là a pregare.
37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And he began to feel sadness and anguish.	37 E presi con sè Pietro e i due figli di Zebedeo, cominciò a rattristarsi e ad essere mesto.
38 Then he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me.'	38 Allora disse loro: L'anima mia è triste fino alla morte: restate qui e vegliate con me.
39 And going on a little further he fel on his face and prayed. 'My Father,' he said, 'if it is possible, letthis cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.'	39 E andato un poco più in là, si prostrò a terra a pregare, dicendo: Padre mio, se è possibile, passi da me questo calice; peraltro non come io voglio, ma come vuoi tu.
40 He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'So you had not thestrength to stay awake with me for one hour?	40 E andò dai suoi discepoli e li trovò addormentati, e dice a Pietro: Così non avete potuto vegliar meco neppure un'ora?
41 Stay awake, and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing enough, but human nature isweak.'	41 Vegliate e pregate, per non cadere in tentazione: chè lo spirito, veramente, è pronto, ma la carne è debole.
42 Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: 'My Father,' he said, 'if this cup cannot pass by, butI must drink it, your wil be done!'	42 Di nuovo per la seconda volta, andò e pregò dicendo: Padre mio, se questo calice non può allontanarsi da me senza che io lo beva, sia fatta la tua volontà.
43 And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy.	43 E tornato di nuovo, li trovò addormentati, chè i loro occhi erano oppressi.
44 Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words.	44 E, lasciatili, andò di nuovo e pregò per la, terza volta ripetendo le stesse parole.
45 Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest.Look, the hour has come when the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	45 Poi torna dai suoi discepoli e dice loro: Dormite pure e riposatevi: è vicina l'ora; e il Figlio dell'uomo sarà dato nello mani dei peccatori.
46 Get up! Let us go! Look, my betrayer is not far away.'	46 Alzatevi, andiamo; ecco s'avvicina chi mi tradisce.
47 And suddenly while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a largenumber of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.	47 Mentre egli ancora parlava ecco arrivare Giuda uno dei dodici con gran gente armata di spade e di bastoni mandata dai principi dei sacerdoti e dagli anziani del popolo.
48 Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him.'	48 Or il traditore aveva dato loro il segno, dicendo: Chi bacerò, è lui: pigliatelo.
49 So he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi,' and kissed him.	49 E subito, accostatosi a Gesù, disse: Salve, Maestro. E lo baciò.
50 Jesus said to him, 'My friend, do what you are here for.' Then they came forward, seized Jesus andarrested him.	50 Gesù gli disse: Amico, che sei venuto a fare? Allora si fecero avanti, misero le mani addosso a Gesù e lo catturarono.
51 And suddenly, one of the fol owers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck the high priest'sservant and cut off his ear.	51 Ed ecco uno di quelli che erano con Gesù, metter mano alla spada, sfoderarla, percuotere un servo del sommo sacerdote e mozzargli un orecchio.
52 Jesus then said, 'Put your sword back, for al who draw the sword wil die by the sword.	52 Allora Gesù gli disse: Rimetti la tua spada al suo posto; perchè chi impugnerà la spada, di spada perirà.
53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, who would promptly send more than twelvelegions of angels to my defence?	53 Credi forse che io non possa pregare il Padre, che mi darebbe subito più di dodici legioni di angeli?
54 But then, how would the scriptures be fulfil ed that say this is the way it must be?'	54 E allora come si adempirebbero le scritture, secondo le quali bisogna che avvenga così?
55 It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out to capture mewith swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me.'	55 In quello stesso momento Gesù disse alle turbe: Siete venuti con spade e bastoni a prendermi come se fossi un ladrone; ogni giorno sedevo tra voi nel tempio ad insegnare e non mi avete preso.
56 Now al this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then al the disciples deserted him and ranaway.	56 Ma tutto questo è avvenuto affinchè si adempiano le scrittore dei profeti. Allora tutti i discepoli, abbandonatolo, fuggirono.
57 The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where thescribes and the elders were assembled.	57 Ma quelli che avevano preso Gesù lo condussero dal sommo sacerdote Caifa, dove s'erano adunati gli Scribi e gli anziani.
58 Peter followed him at a distance right to the high priest's palace, and he went in and sat down withthe attendants to see what the end would be.	58 E Pietro lo seguiva alla lontana fino all'atrio del sommo sacerdote. Ed entrato dentro, sedeva coi servi per vedere come la cosa andrebbe a finire.
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false,on which they might have him executed.	59 Or i principi dei sacerdoti con tutto il Sinedrio cercarono false testimonianze contro Gesù, per farlo morire,
60 But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two cameforward	60 e non ne trovarono, sebbene si fossero presentati molti falsi testimoni.
61 and made a statement, 'This man said, "I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three daysbuild it up." '	61 Finalmente vennero due falsi testimoni che dissero: Costui ha detto: Posso distruggere il tempio di Dio e riedificarlo in tre giorni.
62 The high priest then rose and said to him, 'Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence thesemen are bringing against you?'	62 E alzatosi il sommo sacerdote gli disse: Non rispondi nulla a quanto essi depongono contro di te?
63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, 'I put you on oath by the living God to tel us ifyou are the Christ, the Son of God.'	63 Ma Gesù taceva. E il sommo sacerdote riprese: Ti scongiuro per il Dio vivente a dirci se tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio.
64 Jesus answered him, 'It is you who say it. But, I tel you that from this time onward you wil see theSon of man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.'	64 Gesù gli rispose: Tu l'hai detto: anzi vi aggiungo che di qui in avanti vedrete il Figlio dell'uomo, seduto alla destra della potenza di Dio, venire sulle nubi del Cielo.
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, 'He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have wenow? There! You have just heard the blasphemy.	65 Allora il sommo sacerdote si stracciò le vesti dicendo: Egli ha bestemmiato! Che bisogno abbiamo più di testimoni? Ecco, l'avete sentita ora la bestemmia.
66 What is your opinion?' They answered, 'He deserves to die.'	66 Che ve ne pare? Quelli risposero: E' reo di morte.
67 Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him,	67 Allora gli sputarono in faccia e gli dettero dei pugni e altri Lo schiaffeggiarono,
68 'Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you then?'	68 dicendo: Indovinaci, Cristo, chi mai ti ha percosso?
69 Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him saying, 'You,too, were with Jesus the Galilean.'	69 Pietro intanto stava seduto fuori nell'atrio; e gli s'accostò una serva, dicendo: Anche tu eri con Gesù Galileo.
70 But he denied it in front of them al . 'I do not know what you are talking about,' he said.	70 Ma egli negò dinanzi a tutti, dicendo: Non so quel che tu dica.
71 When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, 'Thisman was with Jesus the Nazarene.'	71 E mentre usciva dalla porta, lo vide un'altra serva, che disse ai circostanti: Anche questo era con Gesù Nazareno.
72 And again, with an oath, he denied it, 'I do not know the man.'	72 Ed egli negò di nuovo giurando: Non conosco quell'uomo.
73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'You are certainly one of them too! Why, youraccent gives you away.'	73 E poco dopo i circostanti s'appressarono e dissero a Pietro: Certamente anche tu devi essere di quelli; già, anche la tua parlata ti fa riconoscere.
74 Then he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man.' And at once the cock crowed,	74 Allora cominciò a imprecare e a spergiurare di non conoscere quell'uomo. E subito il gallo cantò.
75 and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you wil have disowned methree times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly.	75 E Pietro si ricordò della parola di Gesù, che gli aveva detto: Prima che il gallo canti, mi rinnegherai tre volte. E uscito fuori, pianse amaramente.
