Matthew 26

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Jesus had now finished al he wanted to say, and he told his disciples,	1 Quando Gesù ebbe terminato tutti questi discorsi, disse ai suoi discepoli:
2 'It wil be Passover, as you know, in two days' time, and the Son of man wil be handed over to becrucified.'	2 "Voi sapete che fra due giorni si celebra la Pasqua e il Figlio dell'uomo sarà consegnato per essere crocifisso".
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whosename was Caiaphas,	3 Allora i sommi sacerdoti e gli anziani del popolo si riunirono nel palazzo del sommo sacerdote che si chiamava Caifa
4 and made plans to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.	4 e tennero consiglio per arrestare Gesù con inganno e farlo morire.
5 They said, however, 'It must not be during the festivities; there must be no disturbance among thepeople.'	5 Dicevano però: "Non durante la festa perché non nascano tumulti fra il popolo".
6 Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease,when	6 Recatosi Gesù a Betania nella casa di Simone il lebbroso,
7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and poured it on his head ashe was at table.	7 mentre egli era a mensa, si avvicinò a lui una donna con in mano un vaso d'alabastro contenente un unguento prezioso che versò sulla testa di lui.
8 When they saw this, the disciples said indignantly, 'Why this waste?	8 A quella vista i discepoli si indignarono e dissero: "Perché questo sciupìo?
9 This could have been sold for a high price and the money given the poor.'	9 Lo si poteva vendere a caro prezzo e darne il ricavato ai poveri".
10 But Jesus noticed this and said, 'Why are you upsetting the woman? What she has done for me isindeed a good work!	10 Venuto a conoscenza della cosa, Gesù disse loro: "Perché infastidite questa donna? Ella ha compiuto una buona azione verso di me;
11 You have the poor with you always, but you wil not always have me.	11 poiché, mentre i poveri li avete sempre con voi, me invece non mi avrete sempre.
12 When she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.	12 Se costei ha versato sul mio corpo questo unguento, l'ha fatto in vista della mia sepoltura.
13 In truth I tel you, wherever in al the world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be toldas well, in remembrance of her.'	13 In verità vi dico: dove sarà predicato questo vangelo, in tutto il mondo, si parlerà anche di ciò che essa ha fatto, a sua lode".
14 Then one of the Twelve, the man cal ed Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests	14 Allora uno dei Dodici, quello chiamato Giuda Iscariota, andò dai sommi sacerdoti
15 and said, 'What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?' They paid him thirty silverpieces,	15 e disse: "Quanto volete darmi perché io ve lo consegni?". Essi gli stabilirono trenta monete d'argento.
16 and from then onwards he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.	16 Da quel momento cercava l'occasione propizia per consegnarlo.
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, 'Where do you want usto make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'	17 Nel primo giorno degli Azzimi i discepoli si avvicinarono a Gesù per dirgli: "Dove vuoi che prepariamo per mangiare la Pasqua?".
18 He said, 'Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, "The Master says: My time is near. It is atyour house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples." '	18 Ed egli: "Andate nella città da un tale e ditegli: "Il Maestro dice: Il mio tempo è vicino: vorrei celebrare la Pasqua insieme ai miei discepoli presso di te".
19 The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.	19 I discepoli fecero come aveva ordinato loro Gesù e prepararono la Pasqua.
20 When evening came he was at table with the Twelve.	20 Venuta la sera, era a mensa con i Dodici.
21 And while they were eating he said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me.'	21 E mentre mangiavano disse: "In verità vi dico: uno di voi mi tradirà".
22 They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, 'Not me, Lord, surely?'	22 Ed essi, profondamente addolorati, cominciarono a dirgli l'uno dopo l'altro: "Sono forse io, Signore?".
23 He answered, 'Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me wil betray me.	23 Ed egli: "Colui che ha messo la mano con me nel piatto, questi mi tradirà.
24 The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom theSon of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!'	24 Sì, il Figlio dell'uomo se ne va, come sta scritto di lui; ma guai a quell'uomo dal quale il Figlio dell'uomo è tradito! Sarebbe stato meglio per quell'uomo se non fosse mai nato".
25 Judas, who was to betray him, asked in his turn, 'Not me, Rabbi, surely?' Jesus answered, 'It is youwho say it.'	25 Giuda il traditore domandò: "Sono forse io, Rabbì?". Gli dice: "Tu l'hai detto!".
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gaveit to the disciples. 'Take it and eat,' he said, 'this is my body.'	26 Mentre mangiavano, Gesù prese il pane, pronunziò la preghiera di benedizione, lo spezzò, lo diede ai suoi discepoli e disse: "Prendete e mangiate: questo è il mio corpo".
27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them saying, 'Drink from this, allof you,	27 Quindi prese il calice, rese grazie e lo passò a loro dicendo: "Bevétene tutti:
28 for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.	28 questo infatti è il mio sangue dell'alleanza, che sarà versato per molti in remissione dei peccati.
29 From now on, I tel you, I shal never again drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you inthe kingdom of my Father.'	29 Io vi dico: non berrò d'ora innanzi di questo frutto della vite, fino a quel giorno quando lo berrò con voi nuovo nel regno del Padre mio".
30 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.	30 Poi, recitato l'inno, uscirono verso il monte degli Ulivi.
31 Then Jesus said to them, 'You wil al fall away from me tonight, for the scripture says: I shal strikethe shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered,	31 Quindi dice loro Gesù: "Tutti voi patirete scandalo a causa mia in questa notte; sta scritto, infatti: Percuoterò il pastore e si disperderanno le pecore del gregge.
32 but after my resurrection I shal go ahead of you to Galilee.'	32 Ma dopo che sarò risorto, vi precederò in Galilea".
33 At this, Peter said to him, 'Even if al fal away from you, I wil never fal away.'	33 Pietro prende la parola e gli dice: "Anche se tutti patiranno scandalo a causa tua, io no, giammai!".
34 Jesus answered him, 'In truth I tel you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disownedme three times.'	34 E Gesù a lui: "In verità ti dico: in questa notte, prima che il gallo canti, mi rinnegherai tre volte".
35 Peter said to him, 'Even if I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And al the disciples saidthe same.	35 E Pietro replicò: "Anche se dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò". La stessa cosa dissero tutti gli altri discepoli.
36 Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, 'Stayhere while I go over there to pray.'	36 Giunto Gesù con loro nel campo chiamato Getsèmani, dice ai discepoli: "Fermatevi qui, mentre io vado là a pregare".
37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And he began to feel sadness and anguish.	37 Preso con sé Pietro con i due figli di Zebedeo, cominciò a provare tristezza e angoscia.
38 Then he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me.'	38 Quindi dice loro: "Triste è l'anima mia fino alla morte: rimanete qui e vegliate con me".
39 And going on a little further he fel on his face and prayed. 'My Father,' he said, 'if it is possible, letthis cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.'	39 E, scostatosi un poco, cadde con la faccia a terra e pregava dicendo: "Padre mio, se è possibile, passi da me questo calice. Però non come voglio io, ma come vuoi tu".
40 He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'So you had not thestrength to stay awake with me for one hour?	40 Quindi ritorna dai discepoli e, trovatili addormentati, dice a Pietro: "Così non siete stati capaci di vegliare per una sola ora con me?
41 Stay awake, and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing enough, but human nature isweak.'	41 Vegliate e pregate affinché non entriate in tentazione. Sì, lo spirito è pronto, ma la carne è debole".
42 Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: 'My Father,' he said, 'if this cup cannot pass by, butI must drink it, your wil be done!'	42 Ancora per una seconda volta, allontanatosi, pregò dicendo: "Padre mio, se esso non può passare senza che lo beva, si compia la tua volontà!".
43 And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy.	43 Ritornato di nuovo, li trovò addormentati: i loro occhi, infatti, erano affaticati.
44 Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words.	44 Lasciatili, se ne andò di nuovo e per la terza volta pregò ripetendo le stesse parole.
45 Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest.Look, the hour has come when the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	45 Quindi viene dai discepoli e dice loro: "Dormite ormai e riposate. Ecco, è vicina l'ora in cui il Figlio dell'uomo sarà consegnato nelle mani degli empi.
46 Get up! Let us go! Look, my betrayer is not far away.'	46 Alzatevi, andiamo! Ecco, colui che mi tradisce è vicino".
47 And suddenly while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a largenumber of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.	47 Stava ancora parlando, quando Giuda, uno dei Dodici, sopraggiunse; insieme a lui v'era molta folla che, munita di spade e di bastoni, era stata inviata dai sommi sacerdoti e dagli anziani del popolo.
48 Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him.'	48 Il traditore aveva dato loro questo segno dicendo: "Quello che io bacerò è lui: prendetelo".
49 So he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi,' and kissed him.	49 Subito si diresse verso Gesù e gli disse: "Salve, Rabbì!". E lo baciò.
50 Jesus said to him, 'My friend, do what you are here for.' Then they came forward, seized Jesus andarrested him.	50 E Gesù a lui: "Amico, perché sei qui?". Allora gli altri, avvicinatisi a Gesù, gli misero le mani addosso e si impadronirono di lui.
51 And suddenly, one of the fol owers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck the high priest'sservant and cut off his ear.	51 Ed ecco, uno di quelli che erano con Gesù, messa mano alla spada, la sfoderò e colpì un servo del sommo sacerdote, amputandogli l'orecchio.
52 Jesus then said, 'Put your sword back, for al who draw the sword wil die by the sword.	52 Allora dice a lui Gesù: "Rimetti la tua spada al suo posto, poiché tutti quelli che mettono mano alla spada, di spada periranno.
53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, who would promptly send more than twelvelegions of angels to my defence?	53 O credi che io non possa pregare il Padre mio che mandi subito in mia difesa più di dodici legioni di angeli?
54 But then, how would the scriptures be fulfil ed that say this is the way it must be?'	54 Come dunque si adempirebbero le Scritture, le quali dicono che così deve accadere?".
55 It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out to capture mewith swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me.'	55 Poi, rivolto alla folla, disse: "Siete venuti a prendermi con spade e bastoni come si fa per un brigante. Ogni giorno ero nel tempio a insegnare e non mi avete preso.
56 Now al this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then al the disciples deserted him and ranaway.	56 Tutto ciò è accaduto affinché si adempissero le Scritture dei profeti". Allora tutti i discepoli, abbandonatolo, si diedero alla fuga.
57 The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where thescribes and the elders were assembled.	57 Quelli che avevano catturato Gesù lo condussero dal sommo sacerdote Caifa, presso il quale erano convenuti gli scribi e gli anziani.
58 Peter followed him at a distance right to the high priest's palace, and he went in and sat down withthe attendants to see what the end would be.	58 Pietro lo aveva seguito da lontano fino al palazzo del sommo sacerdote e, entrato dentro, se ne stava seduto tra i servi, desideroso di vedere come andasse a finire.
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false,on which they might have him executed.	59 I sommi sacerdoti e tutto il sinedrio cercavano qualche falsa testimonianza contro Gesù per condannarlo a morte;
60 But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two cameforward	60 ma non la trovarono, sebbene si fossero presentati molti falsi testimoni. Finalmente si fecero avanti due
61 and made a statement, 'This man said, "I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three daysbuild it up." '	61 che affermarono: "Costui ha detto: "Posso distruggere il tempio di Dio e riedificarlo in tre giorni".
62 The high priest then rose and said to him, 'Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence thesemen are bringing against you?'	62 E il sommo sacerdote, alzatosi, gli domandò: "Nulla rispondi a quanto costoro attestano contro di te?".
63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, 'I put you on oath by the living God to tel us ifyou are the Christ, the Son of God.'	63 Ma Gesù taceva. Allora il sommo sacerdote replicò: "Ti scongiuro per il Dio vivente: dicci se tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio".
64 Jesus answered him, 'It is you who say it. But, I tel you that from this time onward you wil see theSon of man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.'	64 Gesù rispose: "Tu l'hai detto. Anzi io dico a voi: fin da ora vedrete il Figlio dell'uomo sedere alla destra della Potenza e venire sulle nubi del cielo".
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, 'He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have wenow? There! You have just heard the blasphemy.	65 Allora il sommo sacerdote si stracciò le vesti ed esclamò: "Ha bestemmiato! Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimoni? Ecco: proprio ora avete udito la sua bestemmia.
66 What is your opinion?' They answered, 'He deserves to die.'	66 Che ve ne pare?". Essi risposero: "E' reo di morte!".
67 Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him,	67 Poi gli sputarono in faccia e lo schiaffeggiarono; altri poi lo percossero con pugni
68 'Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you then?'	68 dicendo: "Profetizzaci, o Cristo: chi ti ha percosso?".
69 Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him saying, 'You,too, were with Jesus the Galilean.'	69 Pietro se ne stava seduto fuori, nel cortile, quando gli si avvicinò una serva che gli disse: "Anche tu eri con Gesù il Galileo".
70 But he denied it in front of them al . 'I do not know what you are talking about,' he said.	70 Ma egli negò davanti a tutti dicendo: "Non so che cosa tu voglia dire".
71 When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, 'Thisman was with Jesus the Nazarene.'	71 Andato verso l'atrio, lo vide un'altra serva, la quale disse a quelli che si trovavano lì: "Costui era con Gesù il Nazareno!".
72 And again, with an oath, he denied it, 'I do not know the man.'	72 E di nuovo negò sotto giuramento: "Non conosco quell'uomo".
73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'You are certainly one of them too! Why, youraccent gives you away.'	73 Dopo un poco si avvicinarono i presenti e dissero a Pietro: "E' vero, anche tu sei dei loro; infatti il tuo dialetto ti tradisce".
74 Then he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man.' And at once the cock crowed,	74 Allora cominciò a imprecare giurando: "Non conosco quell'uomo". In quell'istante il gallo cantò.
75 and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you wil have disowned methree times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly.	75 Allora Pietro si ricordò delle parole che gli aveva detto Gesù: "Prima che il gallo canti, mi rinnegherai tre volte". Uscì fuori e pianse amaramente.
